Argumentative Essay Outline EA2 Freshman English – Ms. Clark Rubric in SpringBoard pg.84 NAME: _________________________ Period: Introduction paragraph - Provide background information using the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How This section will include your thesis (Main claim). End the Intro paragraph with your thesis statement. Hook – how will you hook your reader into your topic? Find an “attention getter” first statement to interest your reader and give them a reason to continue. PROMPT: Write an essay of argumentation about the value of a college education. Your essay must be organized as an argument in which you assert a precise claim, support it with reasons and evidence, and acknowledge and refute counterclaims fairly. (SpringBoard pg. 83). This is where you present your Issue – (Present BOTH sides of the argument) Thesis (for or against) – Make this specific and arguable First Body Paragraph Topic Sentence – Summarize your 1st supporting point. (CLAIM) Research to defend your point ( EVIDENCE) Analyze your research and connect to your thesis. (COMMENTARY) Second Body Paragraph Topic Sentence - Summarize your 2nd supporting point (Persuasive Point- Claim) Research to defend your second point. (Supporting Documents- Evidence) Analyze your research and connect your second point to your thesis. (Commentary) Third Body Paragraph Topic Sentence - Summarize your 3rd supporting point (CLAIM) Support for your third point (Research – prove your point)!!! ( EVIDENCE) Explain your 3rd point: . (COMMENTARY) Transition to OPPOSING viewpoint – use concessions (even, though, etc.) your last SUPPORT point, no matter how many paragraphs you have. Additional transition words : As well, in addition, finally This belongs at the end of Fourth Body Paragraph Topic Sentence – (make sure you transition smoothly here so as not to confuse your reader.) Summarize the opposing viewpoint in one statement. (CLAIM for Opposing Viewpoint) Explain the opposing argument and cite research to prove it. (Evidence) REFUTATION /Rebuttal ***most important part of essay***– bring back your strongest point to counter this point. Conclusion Paragraph – CONCLUSION 1.Restate your thesis: 2.Review main supports • 3. Why is this an argument that needs to be addressed? What can future generations learn from this issue? Why is this issue important in today’s society? ( Doing this will read similar to a CALL to ACTION without the emotional baggage.) 3.Your Call to action (intended for your audience – what should they do now?)
