Technical Requirements Available for Windows or Macintosh computers, Essential Learning Systems (ELS), Mathematical Learning Systems (MLS), and Science Vocabulary Essentials (SVE) require the following: IBM-compatible PC File Server áá Intel Pentium 1.7 GHz or faster processor áá Open enterprise or Windows 2003 server or newer áá Server volume with 1 GB of available space áá 1 GB RAM (2 GB recommended) áá SVGA Monitor and graphics card áá Mouse and keyboard PC Workstations áá Operating System: Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 áá Processor: Windows XP: 800 MHz or faster Windows 7/Vista: 1 GHz or faster áá RAM: Windows XP: 512 MB essential learning systems mathematical learning systems SCIENCE VOCABULARY ESSENTIALS™ ™ Macintosh File Server Macintosh Workstations aa Mac G5 or Intel aa Mac G5 or Intel aa OS X 10.5 or newer aa OS X 10.5 or newer aa Server volume with 1 GB of available space aa RAM: 512 MB (1 GB recommended) aa 1 GB RAM (2 GB recommended) aa Monitor aa Mouse and keyboard (1 GB recommended) Windows 7/Vista: 1 GB (2GB recommended) Hardware/Software Specifications Shared by all Clients QuickTime 7.0 or higher mouse and keyboard 1 GB of available hard disk space sound system with playback capabilities 16-bit (65536 colors) display adapter (800x600 or greater resolution) a set of headphones for each computer station connection to ethernet LAN (Multiple-User Server version only) 16x or faster CD-ROM drive LAN Internet and e-mail access from teacher workstation inkjet or laser printer access from each workstation Headphones SVGA Monitor ethernet adapter (Multiple-User Server version only) 08/25/2011 Deployment Options Single-User Deployment Multiple-User Server Deployment CEI recommends Single-User deployment for those sites that do not plan to connect ELS, MLS, or SVE to a local area network (LAN). In a Single-User deployment, users must install all executable, data, and resource files for both the management system — the CEI Learning Manager (CLM), MLS Student Manager (MSM), or Science Vocabulary Manager (SVM) — and the student player application on each individual station they plan to use. Sites that have a LAN may opt to implement the Multiple-User Server deployment to allow for greater flexibility. The Multiple-User deployment allows you to manage all student data from a central location, making the program more versatile. In a Single-User environment, students must always use the same station to access their particular lessons. If, for some reason, a student cannot use his designated computer, the teacher must enter that student’s information in the management system on a new workstation. The student must use the new computer to access the player application from that point forward. In a Single-User environment, there is no way to transfer the student’s data from machine to machine. Therefore, you cannot consolidate the student information or lesson progress information from multiple workstations into one record. In a Multiple-User installation, users install the management system on one workstation. That computer becomes the teacher workstation, and the teacher(s) perform(s) all data management from that station. The teacher workstation should be placed in a central location so that all teachers who use the software will be able to access the management system to make the necessary lesson modifications and view students’ lesson history. You will install the student player application for your program(s) on all remaining stations. The student data is located on the server, and all the player stations can access it there. 08/25/2011 Supplemental Software ADOBE FLASH PLAYER QuickTime is the core service that displays our images and sound files. The ELS, MLS, and SVE software will not run without this application. Access to the Web Activity Center (WAC) requires the installation of Adobe Flash Player. We publish all of our documentation — including our User’s Guides — in .pdf format. Adobe Reader will allow you to view these documents. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ http://get.adobe.com/reader/ Mac users may use Apple’s Preview software included on the Mac to view .pdf files. 08/25/2011 ELS Lab Arrangement 24 FEET SEE SAY Door READING essential learning systems EDITING STATION TEACHER STATION EDITING STATION 16 FEET This diagram provides an example of an effective lab arrangement for a 20-station Essential Learning Systems (ELS) lab.
