The Outsiders: Sequencing Summary
Look at the events below. Put them in chronological order to create a timeline
summary. The story begins with Ponyboy describing himself as a Greaser and
explaining who the Socials are. On the way home from the movies, Pony is jumped
by some Socials; but is saved by his brothers and fellow Greasers.
1. Two-Bit and Marcia enjoy each other’s company. He asks for her number and
she gives it to him.
2. Johnny and Ponyboy discover that the abandoned church is burning with
children inside. Ponyboy and Johnny run in to save the children. Johnny saves
the children but is badly hurt.
3. The boys go to Dally go to Dally for help. He gives them a gun and a hideout
plan. They hop a train to the country.
4. Ponyboy and Johnny meet Cherry and Marcia at the movies. Ponyboy and
Cherry become friends.
5. Ponyboy gets home late, Darry hits him and Ponyboy runs to the park with
Johnny.
6. Johnny dies and tells Ponyboy to ‘stay gold’.
7. The boys play cards and read Gone with the Wind while they hide out in the
church.
8. The Greasers and the Socials have a rumble (organized fight) and the
Greasers win.
9. Bob, Randy, and 3 other Socials attack Ponyboy and Johnny in the park.
Johnny kills Bob.
10.
Dally, upset by Johnny’s death, robs a store and is shot by police.
Ponyboy goes into a ‘state of denial’ and confusion.
