Year 4 Home learning Activities Autumn 2 Tragic Titanic Activity 1—Writing Activity 2– Art Research the food eaten by first class passengers aboard the Titanic and write a menu that could have been used by a restaurant aboard the ship. Draw a picture of a room on the Titanic. Is it an area used by first, second or third class passengers? Activity 3 — Science Activity 4 – Writing Research a Titanic survivor. In your own words, write what they remember about the sinking. Do you know of anyone that sailed on the Titanic? What can you tell us about them? What can you find out about electricity? Design a fact file page. You could use diagrams and photographs. Activity 5 — Free Choice You can use your imagination and produce a piece of home learning to demonstrate your understanding of The Titanic . For example, you may wish to make a 3D Titanic model from card or you could investigate the crew who sailed aboard the ship. The children will come in dressed as passengers of the Titanic. Their teachers will each adopt the personality of a character linked to the Titanic. The children will listen to each character in turn as they provide information on themselves before participating in a re-enactment of the sinking of the ship. After this, they will be involved in a class debate to decide upon who was ultimately responsible for the ship’s sinking. RE (not linked to topic): Understanding Holiness. School Trip To: The Southampton Sea City Museum. On: Thursday 8th December (4EH,4KB and 4TT)) and Friday 9th December (4DH and 4RM) Main Focus The topic this term will focus upon: Literacy: where the children will write a piece of poetry and a newspaper report that will describe the sinking of the Titanic and its impact on Southampton. History: where the children will explore the history of the Titanic’s maiden voyage and it’s impact on Southampton. DT: where the children will create a ship’s port hole. Science: where the children will create a working circuit that will be inserted into their ship’s port hole. PSHE: where the children will learn about responsible behaviours, the responsibilities of members of families and as citizens in the context of the Titanic. Outcome The children will write their poems and news paper reports onto tea stained paper in order to create a ‘message in a bottle’ for a Year 3 pupil. They will also share their ship’s port holes.
