Welcome to the New York International Auto Show Education Week Worksheet—
the official starting pack to turn you from Auto Show rookie to automotive pro!
You’re going to need a pencil, a calculator, and a head full of your favorite cars.
So take notes, ask questions, and most importantly, have fun!
Calculate the average miles per gallon of every Ford, Chevy, and Honda at the Auto Show.
Then, list them in order of the best performing by manufacturer.
For each manufacturer, find the advertised miles per gallon for as many cars as you can and add them together.
Then, divide your answer by the total number of cars you selected. This will give you the average miles per gallon
for that manufacturer.
Hint: Try to select the same number of cars for each brand and include similar vehicle types for a fair comparison.
List them in order from the highest miles per gallon average to the lowest.
Share your Auto Show photos using #NYAutoEducation for a chance to win tickets to
Diggerland USA or Sahara Sam's Oasis!
Calculate the average price of a base model vehicle from Lexus, Audi, Mercedes, and BMW. List them in
order from lowest to highest average price.
Find the advertised base model prices for a selection of vehicles from each manufacturer. Add them together
and divide by the total number of cars you selected. This will give you the average base model price for
that manufacturer.
Hint: Try to select the same number of cars for each brand and include similar vehicle types for a fair comparison.
List them in order from lowest average price to highest.
You have a $1 million dollar budget to buy as many cars as possible without going over. Calculating
an 8% sales tax on every purchase, list each car you would buy and its final cost.
Be sure to show your work, and try to spend exactly $1 million!
Start by selecting your cars, but remember to apply the 8% sales tax to each vehicle. To find the total price
after tax, multiply the cost of the vehicle by .08. Then, add this answer to the original price. The result is the
total price after tax.
Once you have the total price after tax for each vehicle, add them all together. Try to buy as many cars as
possible without going over $1 million.
Estimate the total number of cars at the Auto Show with systems of educated guesses. Show your work.
One possible method for calculating an educated guess:
Count the number of cars in a certain square area on the Auto Show floor. Let’s say there are 20 cars in
that square area. You would then guess the number of square areas that make up the Auto Show floor,
and multiply that number by 20.
To help check your answer, note that the Javits Center has a total floor area of 1,800,000 square feet.
