Why is the Raven our Mascot?
The raven is a black, glossy bird that is a member of the crow family. The raven is known
for its competitiveness, intelligence, mastery, adaptability, and ability to cooperate. We
feel many of these qualities are ones Eugene Reimer students should strive to accomplish.
What are the Primary School Colours?
Our school colours are black, silver, red and white.
Black represents the predominant colour of the North American raven.
Silver represents the lining of a cloud where a raven flies. The „silver lining‟ provides comfort,
protection, and an inspiration for the future.
Red and White represent two important ideals:
* The colour of the Canadian Flag, the flag and country which Eugene Reimer represented so well,
winning over 50 national and 22 international medals over his 22 year athletic career.
* The Colours of BC Disability Sports which represent perseverance, strength, ability, dedication, and
an opportunity to achieve.
Black Feather – 90% or higher
Silver Feather – 80% - 89%
Red Feather – Best Effort

Our Founder Dr. Eugene Reimer
Our school proudly displays the name of a Canadian hero, Eugene Reimer. Eugene Reimer‟s
story, his commitment to service, unwavering positive attitude and his passion for enabling
others to set goals and realize their potential is a compass for the staff and students of Eugene
Reimer Middle School.
Eugene Reimer‟s significant contributions to sports and to athletes with a disability are unparalleled. An
inspiration to thousands of disabled individuals, Eugene has proven that a wheelchair is not a handicap,
but rather, an opportunity for athletic achievement.
Following a childhood bout with polio, the longtime Abbotsford resident was left with only minimal use
of his legs. In the 1960s, however, when wheelchair sports were in their infancy, Eugene took on sport
with a passion. He excelled in a wide variety of games, including weightlifting, archery, swimming,
basketball, volleyball, and track and field events. Eugene quickly became one of the Province‟s top allaround athletes.
From 1968, until his retirement from sports in 1980, Eugene amassed over 50 national and 22
international medals, 10 of which were Olympic! He participated and excelled in prestigious world
events, such as the International Paralympics, PanAm Wheelchair Games, and B.C. Wheelchair Games.
In 1972, Eugene set new world records at the Paralympic Games in Heidelberg, Germany, by taking
gold medals in both discus and pentathlon, and a silver medal for the 4 x 60 m relay.
Eugene was named "Canadian Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year" in 1972, the first
time that such a level of recognition had been awarded to an athlete with a disability. In
1974, he was awarded the Order of Canada medal for his "inspiring example to the
handicapped". In 1991, the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Museum presented Eugene
with the W.A.C. Bennett Award, in recognition of his special contribution to the
Province of B.C. In 2000, Eugene was inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame. Later that same year
the Eugene Reimer Award was established. This award is presented annually and recognizes a British
Columbian who makes an outstanding contribution in the field of sport, recreation, or physical education
for persons with disabilities. Abbotsford‟s own Eugene Reimer was honoured as the inaugural recipient.
On May 2nd, 2002, Eugene was inducted into the B. C. Sports Hall of Fame.
A valued ambassador for people with physical disabilities, Mr. Reimer chaired the 2002 B. C. Disability
Games held in Abbotsford.
3
http://eugenereimer.sd34.bc.ca
In nominating Mr. Reimer for this honour, renowned British Columbian, Rick Hansen notes “Eugene
was an incredible inspiration to me as a young athlete and he continues to inspire all who know him
and/or his story.” Board Chairman, John Smith, adds, “Eugene Reimer is a highly distinguished
Abbotsford Native whose courage, dedication and many achievements are an excellent model for the
youth of our community, and particularly those attending the school that will bear his name.”
Eugene Reimer Middle School Principal’s Message
The information contained here serves as a student and parent handbook, and is intended to provide you

organizations and initiatives in the community.
• Students must conduct themselves in a respectful manner to all adults, including teachers, TAs, noonhour supervisors, support staff, and parents, as well as their fellow students.
• Being respectful also means recognizing the personal space and personal property of other students and
staff.

the year.
• Students who participate on school teams must agree to abide by the school‟s Athletic Code of
Conduct.
• Students are encouraged to purchase optional insurance for sports related activities.
• Intramurals: students in all grades play sports and earn “House” points for participating and winning.
Roles and Responsibilities
• The role of our middle school is to provide students with a positive guided learning experience in a
safe and caring setting that facilitates academic and social success.
• Students are expected to know and follow Eugene Reimer‟s rules of behaviour and civility that will
allow all students to perform to the best of their abilities.
• All staff members play an integral role in the reinforcement of Eugene Reimer‟s expectations of
behaviour and civility contributing to success.
• All staff, students, and families have the responsibility to facilitate positive behaviours and
expectations; likewise, we all have a responsibility in taking steps toward the correction of student
behaviours.
6
http://eugenereimer.sd34.bc.ca
• Parents/guardians have an integral responsibility in supporting school expectations and behaviours. As
such communication between school and home about their child‟s social and academic progress is an
important aspect of supporting school expectations.
• Disrespectful behaviours include (but are not exclusive to): vandalism, rough play, inappropriate
language, public displays of affection, and direct disobedience.
Consequences
• The development of self-discipline is a very important goal at our school. The aim of consequences for
misbehavior is for students to learn something constructive from their experience.
• Consequences for behaviours that do not meet school expectations and/or District codes of conduct
will be logical and appropriate, with each case of misbehavior being dealt with on an individual basis.
• Depending upon the severity and frequency of an infraction, consequences may range from a
discussion, with admin to working with a mediator to, to a suspension from school or within the school.
Suspensions are rare and typically used for escalating behaviours.
Social Networking Sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter )
A reminder, that the user agreement for Facebook/Twitter indicates that users must
be 13 years or older to use the program. If your child has an issue on Facebook
please “report” the issue to Facebook, (and print the post/message). Facebook &
Twitter are independent companies outside of school.
Informed Consent
On occasion our students are called upon to attend one of our feeder elementary schools (Blue Jay, Dave
Kandal, Harry Sayers, Aberdeen, Bradner, Ross or Mt. Lehman) or to Rick Hansen High School for
participation in an event. Rather than having our students complete permission forms, this paragraph is
providing you, the parent/guardian, with informed consent for permission to take your child to these
events under the direct ERMS teacher supervision. This notice serves as “informed consent” according
to our Assistant Superintendent, and will be in newsletters.
If Concerns Arise
• Regular communication between parents and teachers leads to a greater understanding and
appreciation of the education process, as well as each child‟s participation in it. We welcome and
appreciate your inquiries and visits, and trust you will contact us if concerns or questions arise.
• First make an appointment to talk to the teacher involved.
• If the issue is not resolved then talk to Ms. Jurcic (Vice Principal) or
Mr. Gabriel (Principal)
• If the issue is still not resolved Phone our Assistant Superintendent

Nutrition Break
• There will be a 12 minute Nutrition / Locker Break at 10:03 a.m. Nut-break is the time to use the
washroom, eat a snack and go to lockers. Students are not permitted to go outside at this time.
Lunch Routine
Lunch break is 45 minutes long and includes an eating period of 12
minutes. All students will eat in their homeroom class.
• 11:52 Lunch Begins
• 11:52 - 12:04 Eating Time
• 12:04 - 12:35 Activity Time
• 12:35 Lunch Ends
During lunch break the school provides paid supervision for all students who do not go home for lunch.
Students who are staying at school for lunch must follow some simple guidelines.
Students will eat their lunch in the classroom, remain seated, talk quietly, treat each other and their
school with respect, and clean up after themselves. Students must keep classrooms, hallways and
grounds clean and free of litter.
Students are required to use only the front main doors to enter and exit the building at all times.
The Nest
• The canteen is open during nutrition and lunch breaks. Students should come to the Nest only if
purchasing food to supplement their lunch. They should line up single file and wait their turn for service.
This is a privilege.
• Vending machines may be used during nutrition break and lunch, as well as before and after school.
• Students are to bring Canadian currency for use at school.
• The Nest is meant to supplement lunch, or for a snack, so students should not rely on this for their
main meal.
Anaphylactic Shock Alert
• As a few students have severe peanut allergies, we request no peanuts be in specific classrooms‟ or in
the office.
• A few staff members have severely allergic reactions to perfumes; do not bring perfume / deodorant
body spray / etc. to school.
• Thank you, for your cooperation as we endeavor to make this school safe and healthy for all who
attend.
9
http://eugenereimer.sd34.bc.ca
Administration of Medication
• We prefer that arrangements be made for students to take any medication at home.
However, if your child requires medication at school, please complete the “Request
for Administration of Medication at School” form available from our school office.
• It is important for students with health concerns that require medications such as
inhalers, epi-pens, antihistamines, etc., for asthma, allergies, etc to have one at the
school.
• Please contact the office about any student health conditions or concerns during
September yearly.
Injuries
Students with injuries will be assessed, treated and either sent back to class, sent home, or sent to
medical aid. Students with head injuries, in particular, will be sent home to be supervised to “err on the
side of caution.”
(School Board Office Policy 10.5 – Student Illness or Injury at School)
Illness
• Good health and hygiene are necessary for effective learning. Students who become ill during the day
are to go directly to their teacher, who will direct the ill student to the office.
• Our policy is to send students who are ill, home as soon as possible. Phone calls will be made to
parents or guardians or listed emergency contacts to come and pick up their child. We encourage parents
to keep home, work and cell phone numbers current.
Reporting Absences / Lates
• Attendance is taken in the classrooms each morning and afternoon. The office checks all unaccounted
absences.
• Please phone the school before 8:30 a.m. to report a student absence or excuse a late student at
604.504.5343
Extended Absences / Vacation
• The purpose of school is to provide opportunities for our children to learn in a safe and caring
environment. Students who are away from school for an extended period of time (2 weeks or longer),
will find it more difficult to be academically successful. Students and parents/guardians are responsible
for the consequences of any missed learning which has occurred.
• Students must inform their teachers a minimum of five (5) days prior to leaving for extended absence.
In addition, parents must fill out the extended absence form in the Office.
• We expect students to be caught up and in good academic standing prior to any extended absence.
10
http://eugenereimer.sd34.bc.ca
• When a family trip extends beyond a week or two, parents and teachers become very concerned about
the amount of classroom-based instruction that a student misses. Missing this important instruction can
have a significant effect on learning.
Prolonged absences from school will likely mean that students will develop gaps in learning which may
limit their chances of success in later years. Therefore, the District strongly encourages parents to
consider shorter absences, or that parents take trips in conjunction with existing school holidays, such as
Christmas or Spring Break.
Closed Campus
• Eugene Reimer Middle School has a closed campus policy. This means that only current students and
staff who attend Eugene Reimer Middle School are to be on the grounds during the school day. It also
means that once students arrive at school they must remain on the school grounds for the rest of the
school day. Students being picked up during school hours (i.e. for doctor‟s appointment) must be met in
the office for safety reasons.
Sign In and Out
• Students who are late to school must sign in at the office. If you are late because of a dentist/doctor
appointment please have your parent/guardian write a note in your planner to excuse you. Your planner
will be stamped, and it must be shown to the classroom teacher.
• An unexcused late will result in SuccessWatch at lunchtime.
• Students who need to leave early for an appointment must be signed out at the Office by the
parent/guardian, and must sign back in upon return.
• Students may not leave the school grounds without parent/guardian permission and school office
knowledge.
Planners
• The school planner has been designed to help students manage their time and workload.
Eugene Reimer Middle School requires all students to keep their planner up to date
throughout the year. Planners should remain intact, with none of the pages removed.
Students who lose their planner or remove pages will be expected to buy a new planner for
$5.
• Students should write all assignments and upcoming tests in their planner. Blank planners are
unacceptable. Students should carry their planner to every class.
• The planner may also be used to communicate between school and home about matters such as
newsletters, upcoming activities or performances, report cards, parental concerns, and absences and
appointments. Students must convey messages and notices promptly to the teacher by the same day.
Parents are requested to review their child’s planner on a daily basis.
• Students whose parents are involved daily in monitoring their child‟s homework and progress are
likely to learn better than students who are not supported daily.
11
http://eugenereimer.sd34.bc.ca
Assignments
• Assignments will be monitored by individual teachers and teams. Work done at home is a crucial part
of learning. Students should have assignments completed and handed in on time.
• Teachers may offer extra support to students before school starts, during the day, at lunch or after
school. Students need to be responsible and ask for help.
Copying, Cheating and Plagiarism
• Students are expected to present their own work in their own words. The substitution of work copied or
taken from other students or from sources such as the Internet, and presented as their own, is not
acceptable and will result in appropriate consequences.
Homework
• Homework shall be monitored by individual teachers as well as teams of teachers. Work
done at home is an important part of all learning. It is an expectation of all students to have
homework completed and all assignments handed in on time. Teams/Pods may offer
homework/study hall session at lunch or after school to assist students needing extra
help.
• Students in middle school may spend a minimum of 60 minutes per night on homework, review, and
reading. However, students need time to be children as well; there must be a balance between work and
play. Parents who believe their child is doing an excessive amount of homework should contact the
child‟s teacher.
Student‟s Academic Progress
Please log-in to www.checkmymark.com for information about your academic progress. Log-in
information is distributed in September. Please ensure the school has up-to-date email address for
yourself and your parents.
Many parents access checkmymark each day to monitor their child’s achievement.

keepsakes for the future. A school yearbook may be pre-ordered for $45. This is a full color quality
document that will be cherished in the future. The school orders only limited quantities based on preorder.
Receipts are issued for all yearbook purchases and are distributed to students in
