Shaped-Note Singing
“It’s fun. You jump into it and pick it up.”
This is an apt description of shaped-note singing, a traditional
and unique way of singing. This style is a part of American
culture and the heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Shapednote singing began in Europe, was brought to the U.S. New
England states and then migrated to the South. Shaped-note
music is the very ancestor of gospel music and continues to be
sung internationally.
Shaped-notes are just that: musical notation in distinct
geometrical shapes beyond the familiar round shape. The early
churches used the shapes as an easier way “to read” the music.
There are several shaped-note singing traditions in the Blue
Ridge territory. “The Christian Harmony” was published by
William Walker of Spartanburg, SC, and his book of shapednote music is now considered the traditional book of the Blue
Ridge Christian Harmony singing style. It uses a scale with
seven distinct shapes: do, re, mi, fa, so, la, and ti. The scale is
sung do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do.
Dan Huger was born in Asheville. A music enthusiast, he was
introduced to shaped-note singing thirty-five years ago at one
of the annual singings in Etowah. He has traveled widely to sing
with a variety of communities. Eventually he began leading
singings, and for fifteen years has conducted singing schools.
He leads in four- and seven-shapes, but prefers Christian
Harmony

New Fletcher Library Partners (NFL Partners)
The Fletcher branch of the Henderson County Public
Library is currently a small library serving a large
group of patrons and many families in northern
Henderson County. There have been prior attempts to
build a new Fletcher Library in the past, but it is a
daunting endeavor. Currently, a group of thirteen dedicated volunteers is trying to develop a new larger
library to better serve the community. Land has been
set aside for a new building near the Fletcher Town
Hall and has the support of the town of Fletcher.
NFL Partners hosted Public Library Advocacy and
Fundraising on February 20, 2017. Consultant for
Public Library Management, Molly Westmoreland, at
the State Library of North Carolina came to inform the
Fletcher Town Board, two members of the Friends of
the Library board, the Community Foundation of
Henderson County, and Henderson County
Commissioners how to go about advocating and fundraising for a new library.
Mills River Library Branch manager Brittany Smith
enjoys an early spring day in front of the branch
library.
The New Fletcher Library Partners needs help from
members of the Fletcher community. Volunteers are
needed to provide information for the project to the
public and gather petitions; staff information tables at
local events, help generate more publicity, fund raising, partner with other organizations, and serve on the
committee. For more information or to volunteer,
contact Gayle or Doug, President, at

Why join the Friends of the Library?
The Friends of the Henderson County Public
Library supports all six county libraries in their
promotion of literacy and life-long learning. The
Friends’ annual donation of approximately
$90,000 enables the Library to purchase books
and other media, furniture and equipment.
Friends’ funds also pay for many of the free
cultural programs to the community. The Spring
and Fall book sales are the source of most of
these funds.
The Library uses the money to buy an additional
1,000+ books and 1,500 DVDs and Audio Books
for the entire library system. The Friends support
learning-enabling tools and furniture for creative
play for young children (e.g. Lego Table, Puppet
Theatre). For teens, STEAM (Science, Tech,
Engineering, Arts and Math) materials and programs help our young adult citizens. We also provide development funds for library staff to gain
new skills and ideas.
Cindy and Sue discuss the benefits of a Friends of the Library
membership at the I Love My Library event.
Each summer, the Friends support the Library’s Summer Reading programs from Pre-School, K-5 th
graders, Teens (6 th-12 th grades) and Adults with incentives such as free books, and a chance to win a
coveted Grand Prize: a Kindle. There were also additional educational and cultural programs for all ages,
from a very popular Snakes Alive! to packed children’s audiences at the Main and Fletcher libraries to
music performances for all ages.
So, why should you join the Friends? Consider the membership benefits and exceptionally reasonable
annual dues. Become an active member of our book-loving community. Consider volunteering some of
your time year-round to help make the book sales a great success.
Your library matters to so many of us. We know it matters to you as well.
