Lesson 2 Right of Way Concepts

Lesson 2
Right of Way Concepts
Instructors Answer Guide
1. Describe the “Yield” sign. An equilateral Triangle.
2. What does “Yield Right-of-Way” mean? Letting others go first.
3.
Describe the right of way principles in these situations:
•
At an intersection controlled by signs or signals: Know the meaning of the
signs and signals and obey them.
•
When a single or two-lane road is intersecting with a multiple lane road:
Yield to vehicles traveling on a divided street or roadway or vehicles traveling
on a roadway with three or more lanes.
•
When an unpaved road is intersecting with a paved road: Yield the rightof way to vehicles traveling on the paved road.
•
At an intersection not controlled by signs and signals, multi-lanes, or
pavement: Yield the right-of-way to any vehicle that has entered the
intersection on your right or is approaching the intersection on your right.
•
When a turning left onto a roadway: Yield the right-of-way to any vehicles
coming straight through from the other direction.
•
At a private road or driveway: Yield the right-of-way to all approaching
vehicles and pedestrians.
•
At a T-type intersection: First you must stop and then yield the right-of-way to
the vehicles on the through street.
•
Entering or leaving a controlled access highway: The driver of a vehicle
proceeding on an access or feeder road (frontage road) of a controlled-access
highway shall yield the right-of-way to a vehicle entering or about to enter the
road from the highway or leaving or about to leave the road to enter the highway.
•
When driving on a multiple-lane roadway: On a roadway divided into three
(3) or more lanes providing for one-way movement, a vehicle entering a lane of
traffic from a lane to the right shall yield the right-of-way to a vehicle entering
the same lane of traffic from a lane to the left.
•
When approaching a vehicle roadway and railroad grade crossing: Reduce
speed, look both ways and listen for audible signal (whistle.)
Practice Questions
3. When is it necessary to stop before proceeding when you overtake a school bus
loading or unloading children? If the bus is displaying alternately flashing red
lights, you must stop and not pass until the school bus has resumed motion, you
are signaled by the driver to proceed, or the red lights are no longer flashing.
4. When two cars meet at the intersection of a two-lane road with a four-lane
road, which one must yield the right-of-way? When driving on a single or twolane road, you must yield to vehicles traveling on a divided street or roadway, or
vehicles traveling on a roadway with three or more lanes.
5. If you are driving and hear a siren coming, what should you do? You must yield
to all emergency vehicles; i.e., police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency
vehicles.
6. What does a green arrow showing with a red light mean? How should you react
to a flashing red light? You are protected to turn left with the green arrow only.
7. How should you react to a flashing yellow light? Use caution and slow down.
Proceed with caution.

the intersection on your right. Make sure there are no approaching vehicles before
proceeding.
13. What yield regulations should a bicycle rider observe?
Laws for bicycles are the same for vehicles, however, bicycle riders should be more
cautious and check for traffic at all times.
Definitions
14. Describe what to do at a “highway railroad grade crossing.” You should
slow down and be prepared to stop. If you see a train coming—STOP—never try
to beat it.
15. Describe the railroad grade crossing warning sign: Round sign that is yellow in
color with an X in the middle and two R’s on either side.
16. Describe what you should do if you are stalled on a railroad track: Get out and
try to push it off the tracks. If you cannot push it off the tracks, get help. If a train is
approaching and your vehicle is stalled, get out quickly and get clear of the tracks. Run
in the direction from which the train is approaching to avoid flying debris, staying clear
of the tracks.
17. Describe the railroad cross-buck sign: White and black sign with Railroad
Crossing written on an X.
Applications
18. What should you do if a railroad crossing is marked only with a cross-buck
sign? Reduce speed, look both ways, and listen for audible signal (whistle).
19. What should you do if the railroad-crossing arms have been lowered - STOP. You
must wait until the train has passed and the gates are raised.
Safety Procedures. What you should do when:
20. A crossing is only marked with a crossbuck sign? Reduce speed, look both ways,
and listen for audible signal (whistle.)
21. Red lights are flashing at the crossing. STOP. Remain stopped until the train
passes by and the lights stop flashing.
22. The crossing arms have been lowered. STOP. You must wait until the train has
passed and the gates are raised.
23. Your car stalls on the tracks. Get out and try to push it off the tracks. If not, get
help. If a train is approaching and your vehicle is stalled, get out quickly and get
clear of the tracks. Run in the direction from which the train is approaching to avoid
flying debris, saying clear of the tracks.
24. The train passes on a multiple track crossing. Follow precautions for a train, but
ensure both tracks are clear and all signals cease before proceeding.
25. There is a question of right of way? Respect that trains ALWAYS have the right-ofway. Listen carefully.
26. You cannot hear the audible signals? Roll your window down, turn your radio
down and listen carefully.

1. What are the basic requirements for passing another vehicle? Take caution, be
patient and wait until the time is right. Make certain the way is clear and signal
properly.
2. You should never drive on the left half of the roadway when you are within how
many feet from an intersection, bridge, or railroad crossing? Within 100 feet.
3. Describe the process for making a left turn at an intersection. Begin left turn
signal and start slowing down at least 100 feet from the corner. Look in all directions,
stay to the fight of the centerline and to any vehicle approaching from the opposite
direction.
4. What should you do if you discover you are in the wrong lane to make a turn as
you enter an intersection? Continue in the lane you are in until it is safe to move in the
next lane. Make the turn at a later intersection and double back.
Topic 3 - Stopping , Standing , Parking
5. Within how many feet of a crosswalk may you park, when parking near a
corner? Within 20 feet.

speed from which you can stop (with good brakes) without hitting him? 20 mph
11. Once the brakes have been applied, about how many feet does a car that was
going 70 mph travel before it comes to a stop? 387 feet
12. About how many feet will the average driver going 50 mph travel from the
moment he sees danger until he hits the brakes? 220 feet
13. What is the state speed limit for automobiles in urban districts? 35 mph
14. Does a posted speed limit of 55 mph mean that you may drive 55 mph on that
highway under all conditions? During periods of heavy traffic, inclement weather, low
visibility, or other poor driving conditions, speed must be adjusted so that accidents will
be avoided.
15. What is the maximum speed limit for passenger cars on Texas rural Interstates?
55 mph

Parent Answer Guide
1. What regulations should a bicycle rider observe? Wear an approved bicycle
helmet, do not weave in and out of parked cars, Move off the street to stop, park, or make
repairs to bicycle. Select a route according to skills and experience and equip bike with
a mirror.
2. When is a bicyclist not required to ride to the right of the roadway? When
bicycling on one-way, multiple lane streets and changing lanes to make a left turn.
3. Does a bicyclist have all the rights and responsibilities as a vehicle driver, yes or
no? Yes
4. What are the three most common motorists caused car-bicycle accidents?
