Read the story. Then answer the questions.
I had been sound asleep. So the rustling right outside the tent
must have been pretty loud. I lay there, listening intently. My heart
was pounding so loudly that I thought the intruder would hear it.
Then came an unmistakable thrashing sound. Something
rattled and fell. Maybe it was our lantern, which we’d left on the
picnic table. I looked to my friends. Jim was snoring away.
Greg hadn’t budged. What was with them? Another
sound—a crash. Then a spine-tingling roar that made
me burrow deep down into my bag and zip it up over
my head. I was paralyzed with fear. Finally, after what
seemed like hours, the noises stopped. Eventually, I fell back asleep.
I awoke the next morning to learn that I alone heard the
rumpus. “Have some eggs, Pete,” Greg said, groggily.
“Amazing,” Jim added, “that although we left all our food out,
nothing was disturbed. No bears around here, I guess.”
“Nothing disturbed?” I asked.
“Nothing but our rest,” Greg added. “You were chattering
away in your sleep all night. Kept us both wide awake.”
