Fr8 Module 1 Lesson 5

Fr 8 Module 1 Lesson 5
Starter: Go to www.wildfrench.co.uk , click on Métro 1, then work through any of the
activities in Que fais-tu quand il pleut?
Now complete Feuille 1.6
Watch out for words which end in different letters but have the same sound
Eg: the sound ee
These words all sound like ee at the end, but have different spellings: finis, finit, si, copie, Chamonix
p15, Lire 5/Ecouter 6
Read the sentences and complete them with the French towns in the coloured boxes. Try to make your phrases
rhyme! Listen to the audio to check. Look carefully at the spellings and notice how each one is pronounced!
5.1 In this lesson I’ll be describing a typical day
I’ll be revising times
I’ll be giving opinions and extending sentences with reasons
Revise the times:
Go to http://zut.languageskills.co.uk , go to Year 7, click on Time, then work
through any of the activities
p14, Ecouter 1
Listen to the audio, and read the text using the dictionary pages to help you understand.
p14, Lire 2
Find these verbs in the text. What do you notice about them? Can you think of any reasons to explain your
answers? What do you already know about verbs in French?
Worksheet: Find the French
Complete this to help you understand the text better. Use your dictionary pages to help!
Quel est ton métier? What’s your job?
Look at the following sentence…. What do you notice? What is missing?
Je suis moniteur de ski - I’m (a) ski instructor
REMEMBER: In French the word for a (un/une) is left out when we talk about
jobs
So we would say: Je suis médecin – I’m (a) doctor
How would we say: I’m a pilot…?
p14, Parler 3
Now pretend to be Michael! Use the information you have about him to answer the questions…
Practise giving your answers out loud!
REMEMBER….!
Les opinions…
j’aime – I like
j’adore – I love
parce que… – because…
car… - because/for…
je n’aime pas – I don’t like
je déteste – I hate
(parce qu’ before a vowel)
J’adore mon métier parce que c’est très intéressant!
Je n’aime pas mon métier car c’est vraiment ennuyeux!
NB: très – very, un peu – a little, assez – quite, vraiment – really, c’est – it’s…
p14, Ecouter 4
Listen to Colette, Michael’s friend, giving her answers to the same questions! Jot down the answers that you hear
and understand.
5.2 In this lesson I’ll be using ir verbs and re verbs
What have we learnt about verbs in French? What verbs can you remember? What type of verbs are
they?
REMEMBER:…Verbs in French!
A verb is a doing word or an action
A verb in its full, complete form (as found in the dictionary) is known as an infinitive
(eg to live, to watch, to play)
•
In French a verb can be regular (follows a pattern) or irregular (doesn’t follow the pattern)
•
Regular verbs in French often end in er. These are known as er verbs (eg habiter, regarder, jouer)
•
There is one present tense in French, so j’habite means I live/I am living/I do live!
•
•
Verbs in French…… Fact file!
•
•
•
•
Regular verbs in French can also end in ir or in re. These are known as ir verbs (eg finir, choisir),
and re verbs (eg attendre, descendre)
When we use a verb in a sentence we have to cross off the er/ir/re from the infinitive
(eg attendre----- attend-) and then add the correct ending to match the pronoun/person we are
talking about (eg j’attends)
Not all infinitives ending in ir/re are regular verbs. We find out if a verb is regular or irregular by
looking in the dictionary!
If a verb is irregular, then we need to use the dictionary verb tables to work out the endings.
VERB ENDINGS:
Here are the ir verb endings that match the pronouns:
je – is
tu – is
il/elle/on – it
Eg finir – to finish:
je finis
tu finis
il/elle/on finit
nous - issons
vous - issez
ils/elles – ent
nous finissons
vous finissez
ils/elles finissent
VERB ENDINGS:
Here are the re verb endings that match the pronouns:
je – s
tu – s
il/elle/on –
nous - ons
vous - ez
ils/elles – ent
Eg attendre – to wait (for):
J’attends
tu attends
il/elle/on attend
nous attendons
vous attendez
ils/elles attendent
Worksheet: Find the verb!
Use your dictionary to work out whether the verbs listed are regular or irregular!
p14, Ecouter 1
Look back at the text. What other verbs did you spot? What type of verbs are they? Use your dictionary to check!
Now complete Feuille 1.5
5.3 In this lesson I’ll be using reflexive verbs
CHALLENGE: Look at these verbs from p14, Ecouter 1:
What do you notice about them? Can you give any explanation?
Je me lève
Je me douche
Je m’habille
Je me couche
Can you think of a phrase you know VERY well, which also follows this pattern?.... Je m’appelle…!
Verbs in French…… Fact file!
Some verbs in French are Reflexive verbs (eg se lever, se coucher)
This means that they reflect back on themselves
eg: Je me lève – I wash myself (rather than washing the dog or the car!)
Je m’appelle – I (myself) am called
So what do these mean exactly? : Je me douche
Je m’habille
•
•
•
•
Je me couche
The verb part of a reflexive verb functions exactly like any other verb (ie Regular verbs have the
er/ir/re verb endings, irregular verbs don’t follow a pattern)
However, a reflexive verb needs a special pronoun called a reflexive pronoun to go with it – this is
the part that means self (eg me – myself)
REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS:
Here are the reflexive pronouns:
je – me
nous - nous
tu – te
vous - vous
il/elle/on – se
ils/elles – se
Go to www.languagesonline.org.uk, click on français, then on Grammar Units, then
on Reflexive verbs and work through activities 2-7
Moi et ma routine!
Chez moi le réveille-matin sonne à sept heures du matin. Je déteste ça, c’est trop tôt ! Je me lève et je me
douche. Normalement je m’habille en un short bleu et un t-shirt rouge. Puis je descends à la cuisine et je
prends le petit-déjeuner. Je mange du pain et je bois du chocolat chaud. Après ça À huit heures je quitte la
maison et j’attends l’autobus pour aller à l’école. Je n’aime pas l’école parce que c’est ennuyeux ! Les cours
commencent a neuf heures.
FOR YOUR TUTOR!
Read Bart’s description of his day. Use this to help you write your own description of your own day. Look back to
the phrases on the Find the French sheet and include as many as you can in your own work. Include new
language from this lesson: Check your use of verbs carefully and include some varied opinions and reasons.
Remember to head your work up properly with your name, the lesson number (5.3) and the date.
OPTIONAL EXTRA: Complete the exercises in En Plus, p18/19!
Mots (words), p23
