Conundrum #4 – Four Litres Please
You have a five, and a three litre jug.
How can you measure out exactly four litres of water?
Note: You can use as much water as you need.
Suggestion for illustrating the “Four Litres Please” conundrum
Demonstrating the solution with scale model
You will need:
2 empty 600ml or 1 litre bottles or cartons, Measuring jug, Water, Marker pen, Utility knife
Procedure:
Cut the tops off the two bottles or cartons. Use the measuring jug to pour 500ml into one of the
bottles. Mark the level with the pen and cut the bottle to this size. Pour 300ml into the second
bottle, mark level and cut bottle to size. You can now use these bottles to demonstrate how exactly
400ml can be measured.
