ROTARY LUNCHEON MEETING MINUTES MAY, 3
by SF Rotary Webmaster
Scribe of the Day: John G. Mathers
Editor: Katie Lieberg
Call to Order: President Tim Hornbecker called the meeting order. Audrey
McKeague accompanied the singing of "Mack the Knife," a well-known song
about sharks and attorneys. President Tim presented the Word of the Day - "If
at first you don't succeed, maybe you should quit while you are ahead" which
perhaps needs to be changed to "try try again - failure is not an option."
Carol Christie introduced four visiting Rotarians - from India, West Africa,
Turlock and San Rafael. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped run the
meeting.
President Tim acknowledged the passing of John Hoch's mother this past week
in the Sunshine Report.
Announcements: Kevin Waldeck announced the start of the Golf season next
Wednesday, May 11. Nine La Dow shared the success of the Dictionary Program
at the school where she and Carol Christie delivered the books: that class won a
Literacy Award! Nine also reminded members of the May 14 Bike Build where 70
kids are expected. Jyoti Chokshi reminded members of the International
Committee meeting after lunch . Jim Jeffery reminded members to support
membership activities, and that at the May 17, meeting the laptops will be
presented to S.R. Martin's graduating seniors. Cliff Thomas invited Rotarians to
the next Rotary Means Business evening on May 23.
President Tim asked the May Division to share their personal road to Rotary.
Happy Birthday to the May Division!
President Tim and Nine La Dow shared the many awards given to SF#2 at the
District Conference this past Saturday. They included: Community Service,
Rotary Foundation, World Community Service, Rotary Means Business, Vocational
Service, New Generations, and Best Club.
There were several recognitions: August Reader celebrated his daughter's
advanced degree. Mark Calender acknowledged President Tim for his ongoing
contribution. Curtis Burr shared his visit to Montevideo.
Speaker of the Day: J ohn McCosker, introduced by Loren Lopin, is a Senior
Scientist and the first Chair of Aquatic Research at the California Academy of
Sciences. John provided a view into the White Shark that was most revealing.
There are 500 living shark types, the biggest being the 55-foot whale shark and
the smallest the Cuban cigar shark. White sharks eat their siblings in utero and
are close to four feet at birth. Over the first six years they feed on bottom fish
and only then, once they are large enough, becoming surface feeders. White
shark attacks on humans are well catalogued (103 since 1950 with 12 fatalities)
on the West Coast during the Fall salmon migration. Seals follow the salmon and
sharks follow the seals. Divers, surfers and kayakers are especially vulnerable, as
they can be easily mistaken for sharks' natural prey. Of particular interest to
Rotarians concerned about the changing ocean ecosystem was John's statistic of
70 million sharks being caught each year. For millennia sharks have provided an
invaluable cleaning service within the ocean ecosystem, a service that is quickly
degrading.
The raffle prize was a bottle of wine provided by President Tim, won by John
Mathers.
Next week's speaker will be Amelia Davis on photographer Jim Marshall.
