Take an Hour for Wellness
Begins This Week
All Newport News Shipbuilding employees are eligible to receive a FREE flu shot and health screening
as part of this year’s “Take an Hour for Wellness” (TAH) program. TAH, part of HII’s “BeWell for Life”
wellness programs, will begin Tuesday, Sept. 15 and run through the end of November.
The health screening will measure blood pressure and body composition and also includes a finger
stick to test total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and glucose. All results are 100 percent confidential
and are only shared with the employee following the screening.
Employees who are planning to get both a flu shot and health screening can decrease their wait
time by scheduling an appointment in advance via the TAH online scheduling system. Employees
who receive a health screening will also receive a free tote bag. Employees who opt to only get a
flu shot do not need an appointment. Visit www.huntingtoningalls.com/tah to schedule an
appointment or for additional information. Email [email protected] for questions.
The Apprentice School Participates in White House Summit
The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding, and the Haley Reeves Barbour Maritime
Training Academy at Ingalls Shipbuilding participated in the White House Summit on
Apprenticeship last week. The event brought together employers, community colleges, non-profits,
labor leaders and others who are helping to promote apprenticeships across the country. Everett
Jordan, director of Education at Newport News’ Apprentice School, participated in a congressional
panel on the topic following the summit. Jordan was among five apprenticeship leaders who were
invited to provide a brief overview of their programs and address questions from members of
Congress and their staff. Garry Mercer, Ingalls’ manager of the apprentice program, also attended
the summit. ...READ ON PG 3
AMSEC Wins U.S. Navy
Engineering and Technical

On Sept. 9, Huntington Ingalls Industries
announced AMSEC LLC, the subsidiary
operating under Newport News Shipbuilding,
was awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy
to provide support services to Navy ships
on behalf of the Mid-Atlantic Regional
Maintenance Center.
AMSEC was one of three contractors awarded
a multiple task order, cost-plus-fixed-fee,
indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract
for hull, mechanical and electrical engineering;
analytical support; logistics support; and
other technical support. The estimated ceiling
amount of the contract is $83 million. Contract
funds will be awarded on a competitive task
order basis among the awardees.
“AMSEC has more than 34 years of experience
delivering complete hull, mechanical and

Foundry Inspection Team
Recognized for Working Safe
In August, the Foundry Inspection Team was
recognized by leadership for working safe. The
team celebrated with a luncheon Aug. 27.
“We are not just a team, we are a family,”
said Karen Harding (A572). “We strive to
be safe and go home each day the same way
we came in. Other things that our team does
to ensure the safety of each other and others
around us is to contribute and stay engaged
in safety discussions, remain aware of our
surroundings and changing conditions,
report any unsafe conditions, and avoid taking
unnecessary risks. Our foreman is
strong on safety and keeps us informed.
Safety is a priority that is taken
seriously.”

The team has been accident-free for the past three years.
Superintendent Kent Price added, “I believe the key to the success of this team lies in the highly
professional people who know their jobs and know how to perform them safely.”
Workforce Diversity Magazine Features NNS Shipbuilder
Mary Perkinson, engineering manager for Newport News Shipbuilding, was recently featured in Workforce Diversity’s magazine. Perkinson manages
the NNS Crane Long Range Strategic Plan that documents the crane replacement strategy and budget.
“I oversee all aspects of crane project implementation, including the documentation, budgeting, scheduling, construction verification, commissioning,
endurance testing, inspection, load testing, and certification of completed crane projects,” Perkins said. “Being part of a process that takes raw materials
and makes them into a finished product is exciting. The process starts with an idea that then becomes a design, which fixes a problem or serves a need.
“All along the way, important decisions are made such as selecting the best materials to use for a safe, quality product while staying within the projected
costs and delivery.” Visit www.eop.com from a home computer to read the entire article.
ISCVN Team is Looking for
Suggestions
On Aug. 11, Chris Miner, vice president of
In-Service Aircraft Carriers, and the division’s
engagement champions spoke to shipbuilders
working on USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and USS
Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) about the new “InService Carrier Engagement Comment Line.” The
ISCVN Comment Line (380-7777) is open to all
employees to provide suggestions and concerns
related to the ISCVN division.
“The purpose of the walkabout was to let
employees know that their opinions count
and their feedback is important,” said Miner.
“The ISCVN Engagement Champions are
dedicated to keeping the work environment
safe, improving communication and supporting
every shipbuilder.”

HOLA to Host Hispanic Heritage Month Event
Newport News Shipbuilding will recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 - Oct. 15.
The month is recognized to honor the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans to the
United States and to celebrate their heritage and culture.

Governor Terry McAuliffe, center, and Fred Andy, NNS Talent
Acquisition Military Outreach representative.

“Newport News Shipbuilding employs
thousands of military veterans and military
reservists,” said Andy Schwartz, V-3 program
manager. “They are proud supporters of all
branches of the U.S. military and are committed
to hiring candidates with prior military service
and as well assisting their veteran and reservist
employees.”
Hispanic Heritage Month roots go back to 1968 and begins on Sept. 15 each year to coincide with
independence day celebrations for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during
this month. In 1989, the commemoration was expanded from one week to a full month. President
George H.W. Bush said, “Perhaps no single ethnic group has had as profound an impact upon our
nation as Hispanic Americans. Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, and
other men and women of Hispanic descent, have not only demonstrated the power of individual
enterprise but also added to the cultural diversity that so enriches American life.”
Newport News Shipbuilding’s theme for the 2015 observation of Hispanic Heritage Month is,
“Many Stories, Many Backgrounds, One American Spirit.”
In commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hispanic Outreach Leadership Alliance
(HOLA) Employee Resource Group will host a celebration from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29
in Bldg. 520-6 - James River Room. The after-work event is open to all shipbuilders and will include
light refreshments, music and country displays. NNS President Matt Mulherin will be the guest
speaker.
Visit the HOLA website for additional information or to view a PDF of NNS’ 2015 Hispanic
Heritage Month poster.

Bldg. 903 Fire Wardens Visit NNS Firehouse
In August, the fire wardens of Bldg. 903 visited the company’s firehouse to encourage the sharing of
information and increase collaboration with the firemen of Newport News Shipbuilding.
Tim Basham, lead fire warden for Bldg. 903-3, planned the tour. “I thought it would be a great
opportunity for the fire wardens on my floor to meet with Newport News Shipbuilding firemen to
share fire-safety knowledge. The tour was an opportunity for both groups to learn from each other,”
he said. “Practices were shared and relationships were built.”
Following the firehouse tour, NNS Fire Marshal Troy Long attended the group’s second quarter fire
warden meeting. “I was able to reiterate my impressions of the firehouse visit,” he said. “The theme
of the visit was ‘safety first’ and I’m very confident that Bldg. 903’s fire wardens are doing what it
takes to keep all the employees in the building as safe as possible in an emergency.”
The White House Summit on Apprenticeship
is focused on creating a core set of national,
industry-specific apprenticeship training models and building momentum for more youth
apprenticeships. The attendees were among
140 organizations who have signed on to be
ApprenticeshipUSA Leaders. The U.S. Department of Labor also announced during the event
a new National Apprenticeship Week, which
will begin Nov. 2.
"America was built on the skills these
apprentices are learning today, and Ingalls is
proud to play a part in that effort," Mercer said.
"These skills are timeless and vital to the future
of our country. It's an honor to be included
with this large contingent of apprenticeship
leaders at this summit."

ISO Audits Planned for Next Week
Newport News Shipbuilding will undergo a certification audit of its Environmental Management System (EMS) and
a surveillance audit of its Quality Management System (QMS) Sept. 21-25. The American Bureau of Shipbuilding
Quality Evaluations (ABS-QE) will conduct the two audits. The audits will continue as an “integrated” approach in
evaluating key areas of these two management systems. This means that personnel involved in discussions with
the auditors will likely be questioned on both quality and environmental aspects of their work.
Environmental Management Systems
“Fear 2 Freedom”
Volunteer Event
“Fear 2 Freedom” (F2F) is a global not-for-profit
organization dedicated to restoring the lives of
those wounded by sexual assault. F2F partners
with universities, hospitals and communities to
provide after-care kits to those affected by rape,
child abuse, domestic violence or sex-trafficking.
Newport News Shipbuilding employees, family
members and friends are needed from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 to participate
in an NNS Volunteer Day with F2F. Volunteers
will prepare kits of supplies offered to victims of
sexual assault, which will include folding clothes
and prepping “Freedom Bears.” F2F is located
on Enterprise Drive in Newport News. For more
information view the flier or contact Judy Fundak
(K18) at 380-3011. Visit www.fear2freedom.org
from a home computer for more information
about F2F.
All parts of the ISO standard 14001 will be audited. Employees may be stopped by auditors and interviewed
about general awareness of the company’s environmental policy or how their job could affect the environment.
Employees can refer to their green ISO 14001 badge cards or the O27 Environmental, Health and Safety
Yardnet page as a reminder of the shipyard’s environmental policy.
NNS is looking forward to another successful audit to maintain the shipyard’s ISO 14001 certification for the
Environmental Management System. The shipyard was originally awarded in 2003 and was renewed in 2006,
2009 and in 2012. Contact Dwain Jenkins (O27) at 534-4066 for questions.
Quality Management Systems
The audit team will review work documents associated with many of the areas of the shipyard, including records
for equipment calibration, training, production control, product testing, internal audits, and corrective and
preventive actions. Auditors may also request to randomly interview employees in both nuclear and non-nuclear
work areas about work procedures to evaluate their work practices, overall awareness of Newport News’ quality
management policies and the knowledge of the impact their work has. Employees should answer questions
about how they normally accomplish their work.
During the last audit, several people and departments were asked about their work processes. Managers,
general foremen and supervisors should emphasize to employees the importance of having knowledge of their
work procedures and working to authorized procedures and drawings.
A successful audit will maintain the shipyard’s ISO 9001 certificate for the Quality Management System. The
shipyard was first certified to ISO 9001 in 1993 and has renewed the certification every three years since. For
more information, contact Tony Burger (O04) at 534-3222.
