Unit 5 – Rates, Ratios, and Proportions Lesson 4 – Proportions and Scale Green Handout Green – Proportions and Scale 1. Ellen is going to drive from New York City to Los Angeles. She looks at a map and finds the two cities are 6.5 inches apart. If the scale on the map is 1 inch = 460 miles, how many miles will Ellen’s trip be? 2. The scale on the map is 1 cm = 14.7 kilometers. If Jessie wanted to ride his bike for 100 kilometers, then how many centimeters would 100 kilometers be on the map? (Round to the nearest tenth) 3. Nancy has a tree in her yard that is 83 feet from her house. She is trying to find out if the tree will hit her house if it blows down in a storm. Nancy is 5’ 2” (this means “5 feet and 2 inches”) tall and casts a shadow of 2’ 11”. At the same time the tree casts a shadow of 52.5’. How tall is the tree? Remember that there are 12 inches in 1 foot. 1 Unit 5 – Rates, Ratios, and Proportions Lesson 4 – Proportions and Scale Green Handout Solutions 1. 1"(on map) 460 (real miles) 2. = 6.5 x = 2990 miles 6.8 centimeters 1 cm (on map ) n = 14.7 (real kms ) 100 kms Cross-multiply: 14.7n = 100 N = 6.8 centimeters 3. 93 feet 62 inches (Nancy 's height ) n (tree 's height ) = 35 inches (Nancy 's shadow ) 52.5 feet (tree 's shadow ) Cross-multiply: 35n = 3255 N = 93 feet 2 Unit 5 – Rates, Ratios, and Proportions Lesson 4 – Proportions and Scale Green Handout Bibliography Information Teachers attempted to cite the sources for the problems included in this problem set.
