For the mayor’s seat, with incumbent Mark Mathews choosing not to run for April 25: Last Day to Apply for Ballot by Mail (received, not postmarked) reelection, voters will have three options to choose from (in alphabetical order): April 24-May 2: Early Voting Rick Barnes, Kris Jara and Pat McGrail. Barnes was first elected to Place 6 in May 6, 2017: Election Day! 2014 and serves as the city’s mayor pro Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tempore. McGrail previously served as Keller’s mayor between 2007 and 2014 May 6 by 7 p.m: Last Day to Receive following eight years as a City Council Ballot by Mail (unless overseas deadline applies) member from 1995-2003. In Place 5, incumbent Bill Hodnett (elected in 2014) is being challenged by Chris Whatley, who recently served for a year on the Planning & Zoning Commission. And with incumbent Rick Barnes deciding to run for mayor, four candidates will face off for the Place 6 seat: Tag Green, Mitch Holmes, Brenden Leavitt and Ryan Martin. Holmes previously served on the Keller City Council from 2003 to 2011. Martin recently finished a two-year term on the Economic Development Board and now serves as an alternate to the Parks & Recreation Board. Regional Animal Adoption Center 330 Rufe Snow Drive Pet of the Week Weather permitting, K-9 Pointe Dog Park will be closed Tuesday, Feb. 21 through Thursday, Feb. 23 as Parks and Recreation crews install new water fountains inside the fenced areas (for dogs and their humans) as well as make adjustments to drainage on the large dog side of the park that will allow it to reopen quicker in the future following rain. Area dogs and their owners are invited to enjoy a weekly series of fun at the K-9 Pointe Dog Park this spring as the Parks & Recreation Department hosts Yappy Hour. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra returns to Keller for its annual concert hosted by the Keller Public Arts Board at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at Keller High School’s Fine Arts Center, 601 Pate Orr Road. Daniel Black will conduct the orchestra in works by composers John Stafford Smith, Johannes Brahms and Antonin Dvorak, featuring soloist Sai Sai Ding. Support for this performance is provided by the City of Keller Public Arts Program. Tickets, $5 per person, may be purchased at The Keller Pointe, 405 Rufe Snow Drive; Keller Town Hall, 1100 Bear Creek Pkwy; and the Keller Senior Activities Center, 660 Johnson Road. Let us know what you think now at www.cityofkeller.com/edsurvey Smoke Alarm Safety The Keller Fire Department wants residents to respond to a 15-question survey focused on the smoke alarms in their home and their knowledge of smoke alarms by March 31. Results will be used to mold fire education programming as well as assist KFD in grant applications aimed at fire safety. Paper copies of the survey were recently mailed with utility bills, but it can also be taken online at www.cityofkeller.com/survey Save the Date: Spring Recycling Day set for March 4 Keller residents are invited to bring their household hazardous waste, recyclable electronics and personal documents in need of shredding to the spring recycling event scheduled the morning of Saturday, March 4 at the Municipal Service Center, 151 Bear Creek Pkwy. West. Household hazardous waste will be collected from 9-11 a.m. or until the Crud Cruiser is full (whichever comes first). Electronics recycling and document shredding (limit of 10 standard file boxes) will be available until noon. Please note: All Main Street/Hwy. 377 traffic will be directed to turn west on Wall-Price Keller Road and approach the MSC from the south via Chisholm Trail. For safety and efficiency, residents are not allowed to walk or bike their items to this event. Participants must stay in their vehicles at all times, and watching of shredding will not be permitted in order to keep traffic moving. Household hazardous waste recycling services are free to City of Keller residents only; electronic waste and paper shredding are available to both Keller residents and businesses. A current water bill or driver’s license showing your Keller address will be required as proof of residency.
