When energy is required but the organism can’t get enough oxygen to its cells it is able to respire glucose without
oxygen to release (some) energy through anaerobic respiration.
Less energy is released and anaerobic respiration only occurs for short time periods because lactic acid build up
causes muscle fatigue.
This ability to release energy with limited or no oxygen increases an organism’s chances of survival.

Respiration: Process where living organisms
use glucose to release energy in mitochondria.
Controlled by enzymes.
Aerobic respiration: Respiration in the
presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide
and water. Occurs continuously.
Anaerobic respiration: Respiration which
occurs when there is little or no oxygen which
produces lactic acid.
Oxygen Debt: The oxygen required to convert
lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water.

What are the differences between
aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Model Answer:
Aerobic uses oxygen anaerobic
doesn’t.
Aerobic produces carbon dioxide and
water and anaerobic produces lactic
acid.
Aerobic releases much more energy
than anaerobic.

Anaerobic respiration releases much less energy per glucose

Exercise and Respiration
During exercise –
Heart rate increases to
• increase blood flow and supply more
glucose and oxygen to cells.
• Remove carbon dioxide from cells.
Rate and depth of breathing increases to
• increase the rate of gas exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Muscle fatigue Muscles become tired during intense
period of exercise and can stop contracting
efficiently. Lactic acid is removed from the
muscles by increasing the blood flow –
increase heart rate!
Fitness
We determine fitness by measuring how
quickly a person’s pulse returns to resting
rate after exercise. Lower resting rates
can be a sign of good fitness levels.
Healthy means free from disease.

Explain why a person’s heart rate and
breathing rate stay elevated after intense
exercise? (6 marks)

Anaerobic respiration occurs (1)

Heart rate faster so you can remove more

Why do plants and animals need energy?
Plants
• They can make proteins.
• By using nitrates and sugars they can
make amino acids which can be joined
together to make proteins.

Animals
• Need energy for muscle contraction to
allow them to move.
• Warm blood animals such as birds and
mammals need energy to maintain a
constant temperature.
• When cells respire they release energy to
keep them warm.
• To build larger molecules from smaller
ones.
