2016 Report - Mont St. Joseph Home

Report to Our Community
1 April 2015 – 31 March 2016
INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
Preparing this Report is a humbling experience. We gather information and stories about the year’s efforts to raise
money for the special needs of our Residents (Elders) and Mont St. Joseph (MSJ) Home. Memories are stirred about the
hard work, the efforts and successes – and yes, sometimes, the disappointment - of various plans to generate the funds to
meet the needs of our Residents and Home that are not covered by Resident fees and Government grants.
Underlying this emotion is a deep sense of gratitude for the Mont St. Joseph (MSJ)
Foundation and what it represents. It only deepens as I reflect on the difference it has made
for the people who live at MSJ Home….a difference that impacts the quality of care and the
safety of every Resident. The difference is often profound. You need only read about the
successes and challenges of MSJ Home in the Home’s annual “Year in Review” to
understand the impact the Foundation has. For every person who lives, works or visits
here regularly, they witness the effect that the acquisition of furnishings and equipment,
support of training and education for staff, the provision of spiritual care and support
of programs such the Arts class has on the people who live here. The smiles on their
face are concrete evidence!
This Report is prepared to share the news of why – and how - the Foundation and its
Board of Directors are committed and work so diligently to raising funds for the
special needs of those living at MSJ Home. The Report also pays tribute to the people
who plan and carry out the fund-raising efforts. And, of course, it recognizes every
person, group and business that donated funds throughout the year. Every day, we see
the difference your donations make to the people who live at MSJ Home today – and
tomorrow. And, that is what it all comes down to – the Foundation can only support the
Residents through financial donations by people like you.
THE YEAR’S PROJECTS
The Foundation has five annual Projects to raise funds and create
awareness of the people who live at Mont St. Joseph Home. A common
characteristic of these Projects is that each requires local business(es) to
take on a major sponsorship role. We urge you to visit these businesses
and tell them how much you appreciate their support for the Residents of
MSJ Home. Tell them what a difference they make in the lives of these
special people! Because, that’s exactly what they do. Without our
platinum and other corporate sponsors, the Foundation could not carry
out its Mission. Please note our amazing sponsors. Then, stop by and say
“thanks” for their support of the people who live at MSJ Home!

“Garden of Life”
Spring Mail Campaign
May 2015
This annual mail-out campaign has Victoria Square Compounding
Pharmacy as its platinum sponsor. We also welcome AODBT as a
bronze sponsor and thank the individuals who contribute to our spring
mail-out campaign. Donations are used to support the Foundation’s
initiatives throughout the year including capital equipment and
furnishing purchases, spiritual care and other special needs of the
Residents.
Together, our Sponsors and donors make a difference.
Grandparent’s Day & Stroll-A-Thon
September 13, 2015
This was our 16th annual Grandparent’s Day celebration. It was an
outstanding success that had common characteristics of previous
years’ festivities – great planning, tremendous support from
many donors, participation by Residents & families,
volunteers and staff. It had all the signs and ambience
of a tremendous party. And, what a party it was!
We were blessed with wonderful weather that
simply encouraged everyone to take a stroll around
the Home. Residents, families, friends, volunteers
and staff created a continual stream of people,
many of them dressed in different themes and
colours. An atmosphere of fun and joy was
everywhere. You almost “know” what a special day
this is for our Residents by their smiles. Witnessing those
smiles gives participants a sense that no one is lonely, helpless or
bored!
Our donors were exceedingly generous as over $24,000 was raised that was dedicated to upgrades in each of the six
neighbourhoods of the Home. Tables, chairs and other furnishings that were in desperate need of replacing were acquired.
As part of the fun, we recognize the Residents and families that raise the most money for Grandparent’s Day. Andrew
Sjogren and Geraldine Wallace were named King and Queen of MSJ Home. Ernest Medd and Emilien Robin, Brian
Roberts and Josephine Choumont and Isabelle LaHaye and June Boden were declared prince and princess of their respective
neighbourhood living area. It is simple really - without the Residents’ families’ involvement - Grandparent’s Day & Stroll-AThon, as a great fund-raiser, would not be possible.
Ultimately, this is a day for our Residents. We would be remiss if we did not say thank-you to our Committee who
planned this event including Chairperson Ron Bergen, Joan Byrne, Helen Fisher, Dorothy Kosowan, Allison Nagy & Rita
Stanley.
This is the first year we did not have a platinum sponsor for this event. We can hardly wait to learn who in our
community will make that commitment.
Together, our Residents & families, staff and volunteers – and mischief makers – make a difference.

The Gala
November 28, 2015
Talk about a party……that’s the Gala! This year’s “Red Carpet” theme and evening of food, wine & drinks was enjoyed
by 342 people who danced into the night. While all this fun was happening, the participants and sponsors raised over
$50,000 for the many special needs of the people living at MSJ Home.
As people were leaving the event, the most common comment was “please keep our table for next year!” What a
compliment to the committee’s chairperson Anna Stonechild and her planning committee of Ron Bergen, Glenn McMullen,
Bev Remai & Jacqui Wiesner.
Along with every person who enjoyed this evening, we also assembled a great Corporate sponsorship team including:
Platinum Sponsors: Econo Lumber; Leon’s Furniture; Span West &
Northern Lights Casino.
Silver Sponsors: Asiil Enterprises Ltd.; Clunie Consulting Engineers Ltd.; Deloitte Management
Services LP; Dr. Ayaaz Ramji; Mexinvest Holdings Ltd.; Prince Albert Alarm Systems; Saunders
Electric and Spectrum Sound.
Bronze Sponsors: Enchanted Florist; Mosaic Music & Tux & Tails
Together, our participants and Sponsors make a difference.

“Tree of Love”
2015 Winter Mail Campaign
Donors contributed almost $20,000 dollars to this year’s mail-out campaign. Of course, these
donations are used for a variety of different purposes that all contribute to the quality of life
and/or safety of the people who live at MSJ Home. Perhaps even more importantly, each
donor touches someone important in their life when they decorate the tree with
their acknowledgements.
This is the beauty of the “Tree of Love” that is located outside the Holy Family chapel
every Christmas season. It is special because the donors remember or honour
someone special in their life by decorating the tree. We display these decorations
that share the names of the people who are being acknowledged. It may be someone
who has passed away or it could be a friend or neighbor who touches the donor’s life.
It may be a parent, a brother or sister, a son or daughter……it IS someone who is
special to the donor.
Many people read the names and messages on the Tree of Love and quietly smile. Donors
are (usually) recognizing someone all of us know as a member of our extended MSJ family so
their smiles create more smiles! Thank-you for honouring your loved one and/or friend.
And, thank-you as well for the donation – the Foundation cannot do what it does without
your support.
Together, we can make a difference.
Monty FunSpiel Project
February 6 & 7, 2016
The “Monty” is the granddaddy of the Foundation’s fund-raising efforts. This year’s event
was the 17th annual. And, just like every other year, this one was no different – “it was
the best Monty ever!” That’s what the participants and donors say. And, they say it
every year which in itself is great testimony to the planning committee that includes
Chairperson Randy Malach, Garth Beddome, Bruce Grimwood, Shelly Horn, Lorrie
Kaglea, Glenn McMullen, Shannon Meyers, Guy Mounce & Jacqui Wiesner
Special thanks to our sponsor, the Broda Construction
Group who has been partnering with MSJ and the Monty
for over a decade!
Along with 32 team sponsors, we partner with the Prince
Albert Golf & Curling Club to host the best curling – and
fun – bonspiel in northern Saskatchewan. Dare we say “all
of Saskatchewan?!” Every person involved has such a good time. And, lest we
forget, this is also a fund-raiser. And, what a fund-raiser it was – over $55,000 raised to
support the many special needs of our Residents. Amazing.
Together, we can make a difference.

GIVING PROGRAMS
Circle of Care
Monthly Donor Program
The “Circle of Care” program is designed for individuals or groups to
donate a specific amount on a monthly basis to the MSJ Foundation.
We appreciate this form of giving because small but regular
contributions generate significant sums by year-end. A charitable tax
receipt is then mailed in February to support your income tax
planning efforts! This past year, this program generated
almost $30,000 from people who contributed $10 or more a
month. People who support this Program usually become long
time contributors. They understand that the person they love most in the world may need to
live at MSJ Home tomorrow. Or, they already know there are 120 people living at MSJ Home
who need support today!
Our objective is to average two family members from every Resident to contribute to the
“Circle of Care.” If the average donor contributed $20 per month, it would generate more than $80,000
annually. Obviously, this program becomes more effective as more and more people contribute to it. Residents, their family
& friends, staff, volunteers and the community at large currently support the Foundation through monthly contributions.
Contributing a monthly donation is almost a painless way to support the MSJ Foundation. So often, we hear people who
contribute to the Circle of Care and being amazed when they receive their charitable receipt at year-end. “Did I really
donate that much? I can’t believe it!”
You don’t need large amounts of money to donate to the Circle of Care. Small(er) amounts, given on a monthly basis, grow
to larger amounts, almost without you knowing! Together, the people who currently contribute to the Circle of Care
support our spiritual care program that Residents, their families and our staff so value. This giving program illustrates the
power of people working together to accomplish good things. It has the potential to support other worthy needs of the MSJ
Home. Just imagine if we could expand our spiritual care program!!! Or, create a music program. Imagine the possibilities.
Please, contact (our) Jenn White directly and/or our office. We need you!
Please, join our Circle of Care monthly donor program. Together, we can make a difference.
Leave a Legacy
Planned Giving allow individuals to plan for and include MSJ Home in their wills
and estates. We urge every person who appreciates the Home’s dream to be “a
welcoming Christian community” to contact their lawyer and/or financial planner
and/or accountant and make a Planned Gift for one of the many worthy causes
in our community. Hopefully, you will consider Mont St. Joseph Home and the
people who live here today – and tomorrow – in your plans!
We quietly say thanks to Vic & Janet Lemieux and Helen Pasloski who are on-going
Supporters of this program. As well, we acknowledge and remember Pearl Polischuk and
Meave Longpre for including MSJ Home in their wills. We are appreciative of any person who has included MSJ
Home in their will. We cannot aspire to provide the care our Residents deserve without your support.
We applaud the Sisters of Our Lady of the Cross who continue their on-going support of the MSJ Foundation. At
Christmas, they announced a $100,000 donation to their endowment fund that the Foundation uses to support education
and training of our staff. Of course, these Sisters are the congregation who founded MSJ Home in 1944. Although they no
longer are involved in the ownership and day-to-day operation of the Home, they continue their support of the Home’s
efforts to live its Mission and be a “welcoming Christian community giving life meaning.” Amazing.
In Memoriam
The “In Memoriam” program allows donors to have their loved one’s name permanently recorded on our Donor Wall
located beside the Holy Family Chapel. Those you remember are also acknowledged in our Newsletter. The following
individuals had their names added to the Donor Wall through the contributions
of their family and friends to “In Memoriam:” Alex Denesyk, Diane
Fournier, Lloyd Hagen, Yvonne Leduc, Meave Longpre, Pearl
Polischuk, Mary Remai and Rosanna Tetarenko.
As you honour the people you admire and love through “In
Memoriam,” what a legacy you leave in their name and
memory.
DONOR RECOGNITION
Because we are a registered charity, the Foundation issues tax deductible
charitable receipts. We do so for any donation of $15 or more. We
use the Donor Wall located by the Holy Family Chapel to
recognize individuals, groups and businesses who contribute.

Thank you to each and every donor for your support of the Foundation. Congratulations to the 18 donors who moved
from one category to another this year. This year, we had 14 new names added to the Donor Wall. Amazing! The
people who live at MSJ Home today – and tomorrow – benefit from your generosity. Where would we – and our
community – be without your support of the people who live at MSJ Home today – and tomorrow?
Together, we DO make a difference!

How Your Donations made a Difference
2015/2016
Every year, someone asks……where would MSJ Home – and the people who live here – be if it were not for the
generous individuals, groups and businesses who donate their money to the MSJ Foundation? Indeed, where would they be?
The blunt reality is MSJ Home could not meet the many special needs of our Residents. Governments provide the
basics to operate a special care home. But, since health-care reform in the early 1990’s, there is almost no support for
equipment and furnishings needs. There is no predictable and consistent capital funding. We must never forget that the
Foundation supports so many other special needs of the Home and its Residents as well including contributions to
programming such as our spiritual care, education and training and the list is endless. There are so many different ways that
each donation makes a difference.
Attached to our Report, we also provide a list of current needs and wishes that must be attended to in years ahead. Just
when you think we’ve finished our job, we realize that the “job” is likely never complete! Residents change. So do families
and staff but the needs of MSJ Home will only grow as our Home rapidly approaches its 20th birthday on 28th Street!
Contributions the Foundation Makes to the MSJ Home
Furnishings, equipment $58,700
$$$154,414
Spiritual Care $38,000

CLOSING OBSERVATIONS
As you read this Report, have you gathered a sense of the dedication and commitment that makes a difference for
every person who lives at MSJ Home? I hope so - you will then understand my sense of humbleness as it was prepared
because you “know” the work and effort involved in each and every effort fund-raising effort.
Certainly, for every person who donates to our Foundation, we must say “thank-you.” The blunt reality is that the
MSJ Foundation cannot make a difference for the people who live at MSJ Home without donations from the people of this
community. It could not. We appreciate the first time donor. And, where would we be without the donors who have been
with us for many years? Every monetary donations make a difference. And, so does your support and participation in all of
the Home’s activities. This support provides our Directors and staff with energy today and hope for tomorrow.
Speaking of our Board of Directors, it is important that we acknowledge Ron Bergen and his Directors. They work tirelessly
to raise funds and create awareness of Mont St. Joseph Home. Like you, they know there are many worthy causes in our
community to support. And, that is why they feel honoured by your support of MSJ Home. We are blessed by this
Board of Directors who contribute their time, skills – and, yes their own money - to support the needs of our Residents.
I would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the contributions of our Staff. Everyone knows and appreciates Jennifer White
who our donors and sponsors recognize as the ‘face’ of our Foundation. She is passionate about her work and sees firsthand the difference your support makes to the people we serve. Quietly behind her and the Foundation are people who
provide day to day support. Other staff contribute to the planning of fund-raising projects throughout the year. More of
our staff are on board as actual financial donors to the Foundation. Perhaps they know as well as anyone the difference
the MSJ Foundation makes in the lives of the people they serve.
And, so it is. One step at a time, one fund-raiser at a time, one more donor at a time……every act and every person
that becomes a part of our extended MSJ family and supports our Foundation will make a difference.
Daily, we are reminded of the power of people – and, one act of generosity at a time – that together make a difference!
Our Residents are the benefactor of this kindness and generosity. Truly, this Home is blessed by your support.
Quality and compassionate long term care…
Yesterday, Today… and with your Support…
Tomorrow.
Together, let’s continue to make a difference – today and tomorrow.
