Lake Avenue, Cringila Frequently Asked Questions Wollongong City Council is inviting you to Have Your Say on proposed road works on Lake Avenue. All comments must be received by Monday 29 July 2013 What works are being proposed? Various road works are proposed along the length of Lake Avenue, between Flagstaff Rd and Birmingham St. The proposed works will include the following: 9 kerb extensions or “blisters” A raised pedestrian crossing A painted median 3 series of pavement bars Edge line marking along the entire road Reflective markers along the entire road Example Kerb Extension Example Pavement Bars Example Raised Crossing Why are the works being proposed? In the past 5 years there have been more than 34 traffic accidents along Lake Avenue, a large proportion of which involved speeding. These works aim to narrow and better delineate the road in an effort to slow down road users and reduce accidents. This road’s crash history was significant enough to attract Federal Blackspot Programme funding through the NSW Roads & Maritime Services (RMS). What options are available for Council to consider? Council can consider speed humps; however these facilities can have negative effects for adjoining residents such as noise or loss of parking. Lake Avenue also has steep sections where speed humps would not be possible. Council can also consider devices such as chicanes or slow points. These facilities tend to remove kerbside parking and are not ideally located on roads with significant existing horizontal curves. Lake Avenue is a bus route so the chicanes would have to be wide enough to allow bus access, meaning the traffic slowing benefit to cars would be minimal. It is also noted that installing speed cameras and reducing speed limits are the responsibility of the RMS. Increasing police patrols are a matter for the local area police command. How will Council make use of community feedback? It is the local community who use this road and best know the area; Council is therefore seeking input and comment from the community in order to provide the best possible outcome for all. The provision of traffic calming often involves compromise between varying needs and desires, however Council always considers safety as the highest priority. All community feedback will be considered and used to amend the proposal if required. Council will prepare a report for consideration by Councillors and then seek Traffic Committee approval. When will the community be advised of the outcome of this stage of the consultation on traffic calming options? After Council consideration, letters will be sent to Lake Avenue residents advising the results of the consultation process and Council’s final proposal for the street. How will the proposal be funded? Council has Federal Black Spot funding available through RMS for construction in the 2013/14 financial year. How can I have my say on the traffic calming options? After reading this FAQ sheet, complete the feedback form and tell us your views on the project and any suggestions for improvement. Please return the completed feedback form to Council by 29 July 2013. When will the works be completed? It is proposed that the works will take place in the 2013/2014 financial year. Who can I contact for more information? Please contact Council’s Traffic & Transport section on 4227 7299 or the Community Engagement team on 4227 7060 for more information on this project.
