Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts

•
Make sure students realize that the different characteristics, or adaptations, that plants and animals develop in
response to their environments occur very slowly over hundreds of thousands of years.
Many people think that plants do not respond to stimuli. Plants have many responses to their environment.
Make sure students understand that cells specialize very early in the development of an organism.
Make sure students know that the stages of a bird’s or fish’s development are not a sequence of distinct and
dramatic changes.
Students may think that eggs they get from the grocery store are able to grow into chicks.
Explain to students that the scaly skin of reptiles may be shiny, but it is not slimy. It is very dry and smooth.
Upon observing a small insect with wings, people tend to think it is a baby insect that is still growing.
