EAST ALLEN COUNTY SCHOOLS Bundle 3 Grade 9 Language Arts Poetry Big Idea: Interpretation Enduring Understandings The use of figurative language impacts the interpretation of poetry. Analyzing a particular point of view and connecting it to its country of origin aids in understanding culture. Authors access and utilize authoritative sources. Essential Questions Why do authors use figurative language? How does culture influence an author’s work? What is a reliable source? How are sources integrated into writing? What are some media formats that will be effective in presentation styles? Speakers incorporate different media formats. Students will use the internet to research the poet’s life, the poet’s accomplishments, analysis of a poem, and an influence on the poet to include in the presentation. For example, a student could choose to research Edgar Allan Poe. The information about his life could include his birth/death, education, family life, etc. His accomplishments could include writing over 50 poems and several short stories. One poem that could be analyzed is “The Bells”. Finally, an influence on Edgar Allan Poe could be the rich family who took him in. Additionally, students will create a works cited slide. Upon completing the power point, students will present to the class. A possible assessment rubric is provided in the Appendix under Curriculum for each Performance Task.
