Earlsfield Primary School Newsletter Earlsfield Primary School Tranmere Road London SW18 3QQ The London Borough of Wandsworth Issue 17: Monday 20th February 2017 You may have seen emailed via ParentMail an invitation to the Unicef ‘Right Click Workshop’ for Parents and Children on Thursday 23rd February 3.304.30pm. We have been very pleased with how popular it has been and how quickly parents signed up with their children. Owing to the nature of the session, there are limited places and the workshop is now full. We will contact parents via Parent Mail on Monday or Tuesday this week to confirm if you have been allocated a place. In the meantime, we will contact the organisers to see if they can run another session for this academic year so if you’re still interested, please leave your name with Hayley in the office. Congratulations to our Year 2 children who entered the Wandsworth Game 24 Maths Tournament and came overall 2nd! We are very proud. We look forward to seeing the children dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl book character as we celebrate World Book Day on the 2nd March On Wednesday the 8th of February, 7 children from the Netball squad went to Burntwood School for an inter school netball tournament. In freezing conditions we unfortunately did not advance to the finals, however the team showed excellent sportsmanship and respect during the day. As you are aware the School was recently visited for 2 days by a number of Headtachers and a former OFSTED inspector as part of the Guided Peer Evaluation project led by Belleville Primary School. You should be very proud of your children, we are! ‘The school’s aims and values permeate the school, exemplified by the children’s pride of the school’s ethos. There is a strong sense of commitment by all levels of teaching staff, support staff and pupils. Clear, strong leadership has created a safe, friendly, secure and well-organised environment where children thrive, are engaged by their learning and are proud to come to school.’ Johnny Sertin, the Pioneer minister from St Andrew's Church in Earlsfield and his friends from the Community ( including lots of familiar faces) delivered an assembly for the children about some of the values of Christianity in a fun, interactive way that had the children engaged and keen to learn more. A huge thank you for giving their time to come and talk to us all and launch our RE Days Year 2 had a wonderful time visiting St Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday 8th February. Not only did it link in with their Christianity learning but it was also great to see such a famous building from the Great Fire of London, helping to bring all their ideas to life! They learnt about the different features of a church and even lay down on the floor to stare up at the beautiful mosaics made of glass, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. These told the Christian story of creation and included many animals from land, sea and sky. Looking up at the dome was amazing and something that the children loved looking at, particularly after drawing it in their art lessons prior to their visit. Did you know that Sir Christopher Wren designed St Paul's Cathedral to be exactly 365 feet tall, to represent each day of the year? Year 2 had a fantastic time learning all these facts and many more. Thank you to all the parents who joined us for the trip to make it so successful. We were delighted that the Earlsfield Brass Band were invited to perform at the Wandsworth Mayor’s Gala Concert on Thursday 9th February at the Civic Suite at The Town Hall. There were a variety of individuals and groups from across the borough performing and we were honoured to have had the opportunity. Well done to everybody involved! Other things that may be of interest There will be a Summerstown182 talk at the Tara Theatre in Earlsfield on 23rd Feb at 6:15pm to coincide with Tara Arts production of 'Chigger Foot Boys' about the experiences of Jamaican soldiers in the First World War. Tickets for the talk are £3 and they have a beautiful refurbished venue but space is limited so you will need to book! https://www.taraarts.com/whats-on/summerstown182 Geoff Simmons has visited the school a number of times recently to share local history with the children and is well worth a listen! Parents frequently ask about Mr Hopcraft’s band The SoothSayers. They are playing at the fantastic Hideaway in Streatham on Saturday 25th Feb. It’s a great night out, good food and really nice venue. If by any chance you are interested follow the link. http://www.hideawaylive.co.uk/soothsayers-saturday-25th-february-2017 General Admin As of 1st April uniform will be increasing between 40p and 60p per item. As a school we do not make any profit from the supplier and unlike a number of schools we only supply polo shirts, sweatshirts, cardigans and bookbags to allow parents to find cheaper options. We continue to chase payments for various things. Please note that from this point forward children will not be able to access music tutors or clubs without payment up front. All dinner money should be paid in advance. I am satisfied that the office issue sufficient reminders but do not feel it is an effective use of their time or school resources to constantly ‘chase.’ Have a good week, Steve Trow Earlsfield All Stars Whole school Star of the Week Class Star Student RD RS 1A 1B 2B Ella Louis Dylan Monica Matilda 2J 3C 3H 3S 4R Filza Christophe Ada Yusuf Anthony 4T 5P 5V 6T 6V Maya Alina Alex Martin Martha Leon in Year 1 – Really challenging himself in class and joining in with class dscussions.
