RECOMMENDATION
THAT the Administrator’s Report PHSSS2016-107 from the John Noble Home
BE RECEIVED.
4.0
PURPOSE
To provide an update to the Committee of Management about activities and
items of interest from the Administrator of the John Noble Home about its
operations and/or emerging trends in seniors’ housing, care and services.
5.0
BACKGROUND
5.1 Dietary
As a requirement of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, meal choices
must be visually communicated to residents. To meet this requirement, homes
traditionally prepare show plates for each meal. This results in significant food
wastage (approximately 24 meals per day). To combat rising food prices and
reduce waste, the nutrition department has developed an innovative solution. A
photograph of each meal is taken by Nutrition staff on an I Pad just prior to meal
service. The photograph is then uploaded to the Show Plate App which appears
on the Nursing I Pads on every resident home area. Just prior to meal time, staff
show each resident photographs of the two meal choices on the I Pad. If a

resident has difficulty seeing the photograph, it can be enlarged on the spot. The
program has been well received by residents and the elimination of show plates
has proven to be an effective way to reduce costs while not affecting the quality
or choices of the food provided to our residents.
5.2
Compliance
The Home has successfully implemented a Mock Evacuation on September 29,
2016. The evacuation scenario, similar to the Fort McMurray disaster, involved
the evacuation of 156 residents to two holding locations within the building (the
Skylight Café and Noble Hall). In a real disaster, the residents would then be
evacuated from the holding locations to a safe shelter. Community partners were
contacted in a test of our Emergency Shelter plan during the enactment. The drill
lasted a total of 23 minutes with the entire staff participating. Implementation of
these drills ensures that staff reactions are second nature when disaster strikes.
5.3
Our Noble Journey
Beginning November 1, 2016, the home will participate in Resident Time. One
of the precepts of the Butterfly method, resident time encourages staff and
residents to engage in joint activities routinely at 2:15 p.m. each day. The event
is signaled when the chorus of “Sweet Caroline”, a song chosen by our residents,
plays. Use of routine engagement connects to emotional memory and produces
benefits such as fall reduction and decreased behaviours. Staff from all
departments will participate in the event daily, fostering whole home involvement.
Boxes for the home areas have been created and filled with a variety of activities
that staff can use to initiate activities. Activities could be as complex as a game,
or as simple as a hand massage and are geared to the residents’ interest and
level of ability.
5.4
Premier’s Mandate Letters
On September 23, 2016 the Premier released a series of mandate letters to
Cabinet Ministers outlining key priorities as a part of a midterm strategic reset.
There were several priorities relevant to the Long Term Care sector. One such
priority includes the implementation of an expanded scope of practice for
Registered Nurses which would allow them to prescribe limited medications to
patients. The letter also encouraged the consideration of investments in the
sector, including staffing, for long-term care homes. Among the priorities was the
advancement of the Enhanced Long-Term Care Home Renewal Strategy to
ultimately eliminate bed wards, along with additional strategies to reduce the
misuse of prescription opioids across Ontario. The Premier wished to drive
progress in the Dementia Strategy and to continue to advance a national
approach to public drug benefits ensuring equitable access to high quality
prescription drugs for all Ontarians.

5.5 Telephone Implementation
The home has begun the process of implementing a new telephone system to
replace the aging analog system currently in place.
The new unified
communication system will operate as a single communication platform utilizing
the City of Brantford’s current data network and infrastructure. The system will
represent enhanced and reliable communication services and represent cost
efficiencies.
5.6 Hiring Process
Further to a request from Committee of Management regarding hiring processes,
staff continues to work with both City and County HR and the Legal Department
and a report will be provided when available.
Information/Education Items:
There is one information and education item as part of this month’s update: This
past month’s newsletter, “Happenings at Home” is available for review by the
Committee of Management. It represents information at the Home-Level with
residents and staff.

About Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month
The goals of Canada's Healthy Workplace Month (CHWM) are to
1.
2.
3.
Increase awareness of the need for a comprehensive approach to workplace health in Canada that is influenced by the
four elements of a healthy workplace:
a. Healthy Lifestyles
b. Workplace Culture and Mental Health
c. Physical Environment
d. Corporate Social Responsibility
Provide healthy workplace tools, resources and best practice examples, through www.healthyworkplacemonth.ca, to
help organizations create healthy workplaces with benefits for employees and themselves
Increase the number of healthy workplaces in Canada
CHWM was set in motion in 2001 with the introduction of Canada's Healthy Workplace Week. The web-based initiatives intent is
to build awareness of the importance of workplace health for the short and long-term success of organizations and for the wellbeing of their employees. The week was eventually extended to become Canada's Healthy Workplace Month. The extended
program duration gave workplaces more time to plan, promote and execute programs and activities for their employees.
Today, CHWM is a year round resource that encourages workplaces to promote healthy workplace practices throughout the
year. Its website serves as a central hub where organizations of all sizes are enabled to showcase their successes and share
with others.
Excellence Canada (formerly the National Quality Institute), manages CHWM.

SUMMER…IT WON’’T LAST
On a sun shiny day, we take a drive to the country
To enjoy the sounds and the beautiful scenery.
It is so peaceful and quiet in the country, you can hear the
grass growing and enjoy the sounds of the song birds.
Be sure to stop and smell the beautiful yellow and pink wild
roses.
At lunch time, or whenever we are hungry,
We find a shady tree to have our picnic.
Egg salad is a must, along with
Sweet pickles, potato salad, tomatoes, watermelon, and
cookies.
Don’t forget the bad of ice, pop, and chocolate.
You must have chocolate!
On other days, we play outdoor games such as
Marbles, tag, hide ‘n seek, and horseshoes.
We also go swimming at the lake or the river.
Watch out for the crayfish and turtles!
When the heat builds up and the cold air collides with it,
The sky gets dark and the storms arrive.
The bright lightning bolts zigzag across the sky,
And the deafening, scary thunder makes you cry out and
hide under the covers.
So try to enjoy summer, as it won’t last.

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the
resignation of Erin Denton, Director of Care. Erin has
been with the facility for five years and in that time
has made a lasting impact on the Nursing
Department and the entire home.
Her passion and dedication to the nursing profession
is evident in everything she does. She has led the
nursing department to a deep understanding of
person centered care and was instrumental in
launching Dementia Care Matters and Our Noble
Journey.
Her resident focus and leadership skills set her apart
and she will be greatly missed. Erin has accepted a
position as Director of Care at Brierwood Gardens.
Her last day will be October 7th, 2016
We wish her the best of luck on her new adventure!
