Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions
Message:
God looks at our heart.
1 Samuel 16 ~ Samuel Anoints David to Be Israel's King
The Lord said to Samuel, "How long will you be filled with sorrow because of Saul? I have
refused to have him as king over Israel. Fill your animal horn with olive oil and go on your way. I am
sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king."
But Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about it. Then he'll kill me."
The Lord said, "Take a young cow with you. Tell the elders of Bethlehem, 'I've come to offer a
sacrifice to the Lord.' Invite Jesse to the sacrifice. Then I will show you what to do. You must anoint for
me the one I point out to you."
Samuel did what the Lord said. He arrived at Bethlehem. The elders of the town met him. They
were trembling with fear. They asked, "Have you come in peace?"
Samuel replied, "Yes, I've come in peace. I've come to offer a sacrifice to the Lord. Set
yourselves apart to him and come to the sacrifice with me." Then he set Jesse and his sons apart to the
Lord. He invited them to the sacrifice.
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab. He thought, "This has to be the one the Lord wants me to
anoint for him."
But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider how handsome or tall he is. I have not chosen
him. I do not look at the things people look at. Man looks at how someone appears on the outside. But I
look at what is in the heart."
Then Jesse called for Abinadab. He had him walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "The Lord
hasn't chosen him either." Then Jesse had Shammah walk by. But Samuel said, "The Lord hasn't chosen
him either." Jesse had seven of his sons walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said to him, "The Lord
hasn't chosen any of them." So he asked Jesse, "Are these the only sons you have?"

Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions – Continued
"No," Jesse answered. "My youngest son is taking care of the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for
him. We won't sit down to eat until he arrives." So Jesse sent for his son and had him brought in. His
skin was tanned. He had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the Lord said, "Get up and anoint him. He is the one." So Samuel got the animal horn that
was filled with olive oil. He anointed David in front of his brothers. From that day on, the Spirit of the
Lord came on David with power. Samuel went back to Ramah.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why was Samuel sad at the beginning of today’s story? (Samuel was saddened over some of the
things that Saul had done – See 1 Samuel 15:35, as well to discover how God was feeling about
Saul.)
2. How many sons of Jesse came forward to walk in front of Samuel? (Jesse had eight sons in total,
including David, that were considered.)
3. What was Samuel looking for when he was considering each of Jesse’s sons? (Samuel was
looking for the person God had chosen to become the next king.)
4. Why do you think that David was chosen over all of the other brothers? (Refer the children to 1
Samuel 16:7 and have them use their Bibles to look it up.)
Application to Real Life
“Who is Without Sin” Activity
See: www.kidssundayschool.com (Grade School, Activities, “Who is Without Sin”)
For this activity, you will need about 25 sheets of paper and crayons or markers. Please see the
above website for detailed instructions. Before beginning the actual activity, ask the children who has
ever formed an opinion about someone else before getting to know the person? Be prepared to give a
personal example to help the conversation. Then proceed with the activity. Instead of having the
children look up the Bible verse referenced in John, briefly summarize the concept for the children of
being punished in ancient times by being stoned.
Then remind the children of the message and memory verse for the lesson. Just as God looks at the
heart and not the outward appearance, we want to do our best to do the same to others. After the class
discussion, it may be appropriate to allow time for a journal question (see below).
Memory Work Fun
5 minutes
1. Recite the memory verse.
2. Practice finding the memory verse and/or Bible text in their Bible!
3. Play a game to review the odd numbered Commandments (toss the bean bag/stuffed animal,
the person who catches it says the next word…try to go faster and faster).
4. Allow a volunteer (child) to lead the class in an opening/closing prayer.

Activity Ideas
“Inside the Heart” Craft Activity
See: www.thebridgecalvarychapel.com/childrensministry (Old Testament, Lesson 78 – David is anointed
King…, Page 6)
You will need red construction paper, brad fasteners, scissors, and a hole puncher for this
activity. Remember to keep the conversation going during the activity too. Please see the website
above for detailed instructions.
“Pasta People” Activity
See: www.thebridgecalvarychapel.com/childrensministry (Old Testament, Lesson 78 – David is anointed
King…, Page 8)
You will need construction paper, crayons, dry pasta and glue for this activity. Please see the
website for detailed instructions. The children will use the pasta to create their own “people”,
facilitating a discussion about the differences between the “pasta people” and reinforcing that God
always looks on the heart.
“Soak it in” Activity
See: https://www.kidssundayschool.com (Grade School, Object Talks, “Soak it in”)
For this activity, you will need a medium size rock, a bowl to hold the rock, a small sponge, and a
squirt gun or small cup filled with water. This object talk will demonstrate why it is important for us to
have a soft and open heart. See the above website for detailed instructions. NOTE: This activity may be
used as a hook/intro activity as well.
