PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
It’s hard to believe that Meadowvale’s first year as a
semestered school has come to an end. Semester 2 was
full of excitement from annual events such as the MultiCultural Festival, Semi-Formal and the trip to New York
City, to new events such as our participation in two major
Cops 4 Cancer charity fundraisers. The second semester
proved that time really does fly when you’re having fun!
Meadowvale’s dedicated staff are excited to bring
students many new opportunities when the new school
year arrives in September. We will continue expanding
options for students to learn with instructional
technologies via Meadowvale’s Lap Top Learning
Program and the Peel Board’s Bring Your Own Device
initiative. Teachers will continue planning 21st Century
learning activities together to ensure expanding use of
the school’s new wireless network. And our many, many
arts, athletics and humanities extra-curricular clubs and
teams will continue to provide students with
opportunities to demonstrate that at Meadowvale,
CHARACTER COUNTS!
I want to wish everyone a restful and relaxing summer
with family and friends and I look forward to working
with you all again come September.
Mrs. Stubbings
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION
Dear Parents
On April 26, 2011, trustees of the Peel District School
Board approved an administrative reorganization report
that included Families of Schools being organized as
Kindergarten to Grade 12 as of August 1, 2012. This
means that each Superintendent of Education will now
support both elementary and secondary schools within a
Family of Schools.
Previously, Superintendents supported either elementary
or secondary schools only. There will be many benefits to
this new K-12 superintendency model as it aligns with the
Ministry of Education’s K-12 focus on student
achievement. The model will provide a wonderful
continuum of service for parents as it will now be
possible for families to continue to connect with the same
Superintendent of Education through elementary school
and the transition to secondary school.
Fax: (905) 824-9990
As a result of this reorganization, I will no longer be the
Superintendent of Education for Meadowvale Secondary
School as of August 1, 2012. It has been my privilege to
have worked with such dedicated staff, amazing students
and supportive families over the past few months. I am
proud of what we have achieved together, and am
confident that your new Superintendent of Education,
Poleen Grewal will be equally committed to the success of
each student and to celebrating your contributions to that
success. I will be working closely with Superintendent
Grewal to ensure this is a smooth transition for staff,
students and families. You will have an opportunity to
meet Superintendent Grewal at upcoming events at the
school. You can reach her at the Mississauga West Field
Office at 905-569-9946. I am confident you will help to
welcome Superintendent Grewal and that you will find
her an outstanding partner in your child’s education.
My Best Wishes.
Carol R. Speers
Superintendent of Education
DECA 2011-2012
Meadowvale has joined the world of DECA! DECA
prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers
in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in
high schools and colleges around the globe. The DECA
organization has been in existence for over 60 years and
has developed into a prestige organization that builds
strong connections with the business world and provides
a remarkable experience in preparing our emerging
leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. DECA Ontario
has over 8,500 members in
over 200 schools. DECA
Meadowvale had a very
successful first year with our
50+ members. Almost half of
our members competed at the
Provincial level at the Toronto
Sheridan Centre in Toronto in
February. Saloni, Meena and
Chang Hao successfully placed
and went on to compete at the
International level in Salt
Lake City, Utah, USA in April,
where over 2,000 competitors
competed in various
categories. The team of Meena and Chang Hao (Finance
Written category) placed 3rd internationally! We are
incredibly proud of our members and the success we had
in our first year.
GREETINGS FROM THE
LIBRARY RESOURCE CENTRE
We have had a wonderful year in the Meadowvale SS
library. We’ve experimented with e-readers, tablets and
QR codes this year and the feedback was wonderful. Our
White Pine Reading Program was a hit as usual and the
interest and participation in our Meadowvale Spelling
Bee was fantastic! If summer school is on the agenda and
you’re looking for credible resources, please follow the
QR codes below for easy, free access to our online
collections. If you need some reading inspiration you can
check out the teen reading links on the Library Resource
MyClass page on our school's homepage for more info.
Happy Reading!
COPS 4 CANCER CHARITY EVENTS
Meadowvale students continued to demonstrate that
CHARACTER COUNTS by participating in two charity
events in support of the Peel Police Cops 4 Cancer
fundraising drive. On March 8th, the Falcons hockey team
skated to an 8-1 victory over a team of Peel Regional
Police hockey players. Meadowvale students who made a
contribution to the charity were bussed to the game and
packed the stands at Streetsville’s Vic Johnson Arena to
cheer on the Falcons while supporting a worthwhile
cause.

LINK CREW
Link Crew Prepares to Welcome the Class of 2016!
May is always one of the busiest times of the school year.
Students are working hard on their in-class culminating
tasks and teachers are furiously marking and busy
preparing final exams. But, as everyone starts to wind
down, Link Crew, Meadowvale’s Grade 9 transition to
high school initiative, is just starting to gear up!
Link Crew hosted its annual May Play Day, where 90
Grade 11 and 12 students got their first taste of being a
Link Leader. To prepare for September’s Grade 9
Orientation where Meadowvale will welcome over 300
new students, the new Link Leaders participated in
leadership and group building activities including
‘Cyclops Tag’, ‘Count Off’, ‘Name Game’ and an
inspirational dance party!
May Play Day was a smashing success! The leaders left
exhausted from all the dancing, but very cohesive and
extremely excited to welcome the new class of 2016 in
September!
On April 25th, the Falcons football team hosted a team of
Peel Regional Police football players in front of more than
1000 cheering students from Meadowvale and its two
feeder schools, Edenwood and Lisgar Middle Schools. A
charity BBQ was also held which helped to raise even
more money for Cops 4 Cancer. Money for a good cause
wasn't the only thing raised at these two events though.
The purpose was also "to raise school spirit to heights not
often seen," says Derek Wun, an English and family
studies teacher at the high school.
Both charity events celebrated the character of
Meadowvale’s students while strengthening connections
with the community. All proceeds raised were donated to
Cops 4 Cancer which raises funds for the Canadian Cancer
Society.
ARTS
This spring,
Meadowvale Secondary
School continues to
create thought
provoking student work
in the Arts! Our Spring
Arts showcase was
debuted to a packed
house with students
looking forward to our
next one in the fall.
Senior Art students and
the Art Club have been
working hard on murals on display around our school.
Our most recent installation is in the library and lecture
hall. Thanks again to all of the dedicated Meadowvale
students who spent hours producing such lovely artwork.
SAC
The Student Activity Council (SAC) participated in a fun
day of team building this spring at the Finlayson Centre
High Ropes Challenge Course. Their leadership skills and
teamwork were exceptional as they worked through
Excellence in the arts at Meadowvale has once again been
recognized for students thinking both constructively and
critically about media production this year at the Peel
Student Film Festival. Out of over 45 works submitted to
the Festival, Meadowvale Media Arts student Ryan won
first place in the short film category for his piece titled
fabricate. Ryan was recognized for his skill in conveying
important social justice issues within school life in a
creative and succinct way. Congratulations Ryan!
FOOTBALL
Starting in August, Meadowvale is launching a new era in
football at this school. We will be running a combined
junior–senior program. This is modelled after a number
of American style football programs and provides the
benefits of having a junior and senior team, players
learning the same systems and techniques for their entire
high school career, and will provide more individual
coaching for each player.
This is a large undertaking and we would love any help
that our community can provide. We are looking for
volunteers to film games, provide support services, and
even coach if you are available from 3-5pm on the
weekdays.
Our season will officially kick off for both teams starting
with summer camp on August 20 at 11:00 a.m. If you are
interested in helping or have any questions, please email
Coach Fugler at [email protected] or check out
our website at www.mdvfootball.weebly.com.
some high rope elements, flying through the air and
balancing on beams over 30 feet above ground. SAC has
already been focusing on the 2012-2013 school year,
coming up with new and exciting opportunities for
students to get involved and show some school spirit!
Keep your eyes and ears open in September for more
information. See you then!
GIRLS RUGBY TEAM
The Girls Rugby Team had a good 2012 season, finishing
second in their division with a 3-1 record. In the quarter
finals of the playoffs, the team came back from a 15-0
deficit to beat Robert Hall 24-20 with a last second try by
Namrata. In the semi-finals, the team played tough but
ultimately lost to the #1 seeded Holy Name of Mary 1410. A big thanks goes out to all the girls that participated
this season, and to our community coach, Ian Sutherland.
OFSAA BADMINTON
Ryan from Meadowvale Secondary School won the Region
of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association’s
(ROPSSAA) badminton tournament on April 18th, 2012 at
Lee’s Badminton Club. In the finals, Ryan lost the first
game of the match 21-19. Ryan took the second game of
the match and was down 20-19 in the third and final
game when he made a diving drop shot to win the “stay
alive” point. From there, Ryan came back to win the final
game 23-21 to win the ROPSSAA championship.
On May 3rd through 5th, Ryan not only represented
Meadowvale Secondary School, but represented the
entire region of Peel at the Ontario Federation of School
Athletic Association (OFSAA) Badminton tournament in
Stratford, Ontario.
Ryan won his first two matches convincingly and was in
control of each match from start to finish. Ryan then faced
his first real challenge in Riley from the Toronto District
School Board (TDSSAA). Ryan lost the first game 21-12
but remained determined that he could still win the
match. He won the next two games, fighting fiercely from
each point to advance to the quarter-finals of the Flight A
group.
On day two, in Ryan’s quarter
final match, he would face the
four seed in Stephen from
York Region (YRAA). Ryan had
a slow start and lost the first
game 21-15. In the second
game, Ryan got a questionable
call at 19-19 to go down 20-19
and match point. He remained
calm and respectful of his
opponent’s judgment and won
the next point to stay in the
match at 20-20. Stephen played two extraordinary points
to win the game 22-20 and the match. Ryan would then
win his next match handedly over Derek to advance
himself to at least the fifth place position. In Ryan’s medal
match (top four positions), Ryan faced the number three
seed in Owen (SOSSA). Ryan won the first game 21-19
but eventually got overpowered by Owen’s smash to lose
the match. By this point Ryan had injured his shins from
overexertion and had a great disadvantage due to a lack
of mobility caused by the strained shins.
Overall, Ryan placed 5th in all of Ontario in Badminton
and represented Meadowvale S.S. and Peel with honour
and distinction. Congratulations Ryan!
MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL
On Friday, May 4th, Meadowvale Secondary School held
its annual Multicultural festival. This year the festival was
organized to coincide with Asian Heritage Month and the
focus of the show was to showcase cultures of South Asia
particularly with food, decorations and arts and crafts
representing India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The student
performers dazzled and entertained a large crowd of
students and parents with a variety of group and
individual dances, songs and other performances. It was a
great afternoon to see our students celebrate their culture
with pride and enthusiasm. A strong Meadowvale
tradition!
VARSITY BOYS LACROSSE
The 2012 Varsity Boys Lacrosse team was made up of 21
enthusiastic and committed athletes this season. A variety
of returning players welcomed and supported those who
were new to the team and the group established
themselves as a unit quite early on.
The season began with a couple of games that had teams
well matched and had an outcome of only a couple goals
differential. This is a tight game in the game of Lacrosse!
There were a couple of games that had the team
challenged both offensively and definitely defensively but
they courageously kept fighting, determined to not give in
to the strength of the victors which demonstrated great
sport ethic.
The team enjoyed finishing off the season with a
tournament on May 24th where we were able to play
against teams from Huntsville and Beamsville while
enjoying the beautiful spring weather.
Thanks to all the parents and friends who came out and
supported the team this year. It’s great to see you and to
welcome you to the game of Lacrosse.
It has been a pleasure having the opportunity to coach
this team and we would like to thank all the team
members for all they gave to the game, their school and
most importantly to each other as a team. Go Falcons!!
AWARDS BANQUET, 2011-2012
This year’s celebration of
outstanding achievement
in both athletic events
and club involvement
was a huge success!! The
dedication, commitment
and spirit displayed by
student athletes and club
members was
recognized and the
individual efforts were
celebrated by fellow
students, coaches and
parents who were in
attendance. There were
more than 100 awards
presented for sports and clubs and the largest group of
Merit and Honours plaques ever were handed out.
FAMILY STUDIES
GRADE 9: INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES
Everyone enjoyed a pasta
and salad dinner along with
the fabulous cupcakes
baked by our Family Studies
classes and served by the
student mentors and parent
volunteers.
Students have had great success this semester with the
successful completion of their pajama shorts sewing
project. The students did a wonderful sewing job and
should be very proud of their stylish new apparel.
They’ve also had some tasty successes in the food lab this
semester as they honed their baking and cooking skills.
Several students have repeated their successes with a
number of the recipes for their families at home.
Congratulations!!
We would like to say a big thank you to the local
businesses who once again helped support the event and
make it possible for students to attend.
The event was such an uplifting, enjoyable experience and
continues to make us all proud to be Meadowvale
Falcons!!
CUPCAKES FOR THE MAY AWARDS BANQUET
Some of our Grade 9 and 10 students came in early on the
May late start day to help bake and decorate over 200
cupcakes for students attending the Awards Banquet.
Mrs. O’Donnell and Ms. Raposo would like to give a
special thanks to the following students for their time
commitment and hard work: Sahithi, Josh, Samantha,
Bushra, Sabrina, Maddy, Kassandra, Marie, Arsha,
Namrata, Ishmal, Murtaza, Linda, Hayleah, and Sharon.
The cupcakes turned out really well. Congratulations on a
job well done and thanks again for your hard work!!
MATH DEPARTMENT
The math department would like to acknowledge the
accomplishments of four students who have excelled in
mathematics at Meadowvale this year.
OFSAA SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP
Every year in March, the best high school swimmers in
Ontario compete stroke-for-stroke for the title and
honour of being named OFSAA Swimming Champion. This
year, Meadowvale, represented by a total of five
swimmers, came oh so close to achieving this feat!
Nonetheless, all the swimmers did amazingly! In total,
approximately 300 high schools and over 800 swimmers
from all over the province competed.
Sabrina received the TOP SCORE in the school on the
Grade 9 Pascal Math contest. Sue Ann received the TOP
SCORE in the school on the Grade 10 Cayley Math contest.
She also received a score that was in the TOP 25% in
CANADA on both the Cayley Math Contest and the
Canadian Intermediate Math Contest. Abrar received the
TOP SCORE in the school on the Canadian Intermediate
Math contest. He also received a score that was in the TOP
25% in CANADA on both the Cayley Math Contest and the
Canadian Intermediate Math Contest. Sophie received the
TOP SCORE in the school on BOTH the Grade 11 Fermat
Math Contest AND the Canadian Senior Math Contest. She
also received a score on the Fermat Math Contest that
was in the TOP 25% in CANADA.
Congratulations to Talysha for her mad-dash
performance in the Senior Girls 50 metre butterfly, and
Scott for placing 3rd overall in the PARA 50 metre
backstroke.
A special shout out goes to the Senior Girls Freestyle
Relay comprised of Talysha, Hayley, Krista, and Megan,
who secured a 16th place finish.
Congratulations to all the swimmers for all their hard
work and dedication this season, for doing an outstanding
job in the pool, and for representing Meadowvale so
proudly!
Congratulations to all four of these aspiring math
students on your academic achievements!
ULTIMATE FRISBEE
The Meadowvale Ultimate Frisbee Team, consisting of
junior and senior (male and female) players, had an
ULTIMATE season this past spring. The team made it to
the quarter finals with an unbelievable record of 7-0.
On a final note, a HUGE thank you goes out to M.I.V.A.'s
graduating students for all the time and energy that they
have invested in the music program over the years. Thank
you for all that you have done for, contributed to, and
imparted on M.I.V.A. The memories created in room 104
are amongst the best anywhere! We wish you well in all
your future endeavours.
GIRLS FASTPITCH
Congratulations to the Meadowvale Girls Fastpitch Team
who completed an outstanding season. The team finished
second after regular season play and earned silver in the
ROPSAA finals. The girls demonstrated great character
and sportsmanship throughout the season. They played
with heart every game earning the respect of their peers
and their coaches. Congratulation girls!!!
The team put in many hours honing their skills for the
season, and their hard work paid off. They demonstrated
spirit, on and off the field, never giving up when faced
with a strong opponent. Unfortunately, the season came
to an end in the quarter-finals with a defeat on the field,
but not a defeat in spirit. Thanks to all of the parents who
came out to support the team. We look forward to
another great year next year!
MIVA
M.I.V.A.’s annual spring concert, MIVA’s Blast from
the Past!, certainly was a trip down memory
lane. Retro-inspired, the program
featured selections from the 60s, 70s
and 80s.
From groovy flowers and black leather
to the one and only “disco” ball, the concert will long be
remembered in the treasured MIVA Hall of Fame. Fun.
Entertaining. Professional.
A huge thank you as always goes out to the Meadowvale
community for its generous support. Non-perishable
food donations from the concert were forwarded to Eden
Food Bank with many thanks!
The senior instrumental class invited local elementary
schools to an interactive concert in our own lecture hall in
honour of Education Week. Grade 11 and 12 students
rehearsed and conducted most all of the repertoire to a
full house of Grade 5 and 6 students from local schools. A
fun and educational hour was had by all. During Semester
2, music students enjoyed several field trips including
Lord of the Rings: the Ballet, performed by the Toronto
Youth Wind Orchestra at the Mississauga Living Arts
Centre , and Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament in
Toronto.
THE ARTS
Following on the success of the Studentwrights' Festival
in October, Meadowvale drama continued its success into
the second semester. Both The Orange Noose, written by
Ryan and Bilal, and It's a Wonderfully Wrong World,
written by Bilal, enjoyed critical praise at the Sears
Festival District performances. Awards were received for
Ensemble Cast, Direction, Writing, and the Original Score
of Music (The Orange Noose) and for Acting, Writing,
Direction and Set Design (It's a Wonderfully Wrong
World). It's a Wonderfully Wrong World was selected as
one of the plays to move on to Regionals, where it was
awarded further for its Writing and Direction.
In addition to Sears, both plays were submitted to the
Stratford New Plays competition where both received
critical acclaim, and feedback from a panel of theatre
professionals.
In May, the teachers of the drama department took the
helm of three one act plays: This is a Play by Daniel
McIvor, The Worker by Walter Wykes, and Cut! by Lyle
Victor Albert. The student casts were under a tight
rehearsal schedule of six weeks and put together three
wonderfully performed shows.
Congratulations to all cast and crew for our productions
this year!
