Using the Gospel of John for Seekers How to introduce someone to Jesus? The gospel of John is ideal. The reason John wrote it is clear, these [signs] are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, ... have life by the power of his name. (John 20.31) John was Jesus’ best friend (he’s termed the one whom Jesus loved). We can assume he got to know Jesus more deeply than anyone else during Christ’s ministry years. No one is better suited to tell us who Jesus is. Preparation for using John’s Gospel Provide the Seeker with a gospel of John. Perhaps give them an entire Bible, or a New Testament, but suggest John to start with, to learn his perspective on Jesus Tell them John was Jesus’ best friend. He got to know Jesus more closely than others. Reading: the easiest way is to have the Seeker read John and react to it. Meet with them to see what they’re learning. Answer their questions. Advance at the pace they’re comfortable with. Studying. Study the book of John together with them. Option 1: read the book together, chapter by chapter. Ask, what do you learn about Jesus? about yourself? Discuss questions they might have. Option 2: examine the seven Signs (miracles Jesus did to show he is the Christ). They include 1st Sign: Water into wine John 2.1‐10 2nd Sign: Healing a boy John 4.46‐54 3rd Sign: Healing a man John 5.1‐9 4th Sign: Feeding the crowds John 6.5‐14 5th Sign: Walking on water to rescue the disciples John 6.15‐21 6th Sign: Healing a blind man John 9.1‐7 7th Sign: Raising Lazarus from death John 11.1‐44 (and perhaps an additional 8th sign, the Resurrection John 20) Option 3: study together the I AM statements of Jesus (applying God’s term, I AM who I AM. Exodus 3.14 to himself). Jesus shows he is God (the Son) and the Messiah, with seven I AM... 1st I AM: The Bread of Life John 6.35 2nd I AM: The Light of the World John 8.12 3rd I AM: The Gate (into the Sheepfold) John 10.9 4th I AM: The Good Shepherd John 10.11 5th I AM: The Resurrection and the Life John 11.25‐26 6th I AM: The Way, the Truth and the Life John 14.6 7th I AM: The Vine John 15.5 Study each statement in the context of the other verses. What are the implications of each? Option 4: examine how different people came to believe in (or reject) Jesus, including the disciples, Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, the crowd, the blind man, Lazarus’ family, the Jewish leaders, the women, Thomas. Help the Seeker see that faith is not blind faith, but faith in Someone (Jesus) and in facts (what he did). Show believing in Jesus is often a process, Small things done in great love will change the world, one person at a time...
