Haere Mai
Welcome to
Great Lake Taupō
–nature’s ultimate
playground.
Whatever you might want to do in the great outdoors, you’ll
find it here, in this region of dramatic natural landscapes.
Your playground encompasses ancient forests, thermal water
and volcanoes, massive caldera craters such as Taupō – the
largest freshwater lake in Australasia – and the mountains of
Tongariro National Park. Tongariro is one of the world’s oldest
national parks and one of a very few with dual World Heritage
status. Hiking, climbing, white water rafting or mountain biking,
leaping into open space with a parachute or a bungy, netting
a rainbow trout, golfing on a championship course, simply
soaking in a hot pool or relaxing with a wine at a waterfront
café – it’s your choice.
Keep your copy of Jasons Great Lake Taupō What’s On handy,
to help you find the best things to see and do, places to stay, eat
and shop, along with all the exciting events that happen here.
Great Lake
Taupō at a
Glance
This spectacular region sits high on the
Central Plateau in the centre of the North Island, easily accessed
on State Highway I and just a few hours’ drive from all of the
North Island’s major cities. Taupō, the main township and one
of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations, nestles
on the northern shores of Lake Taupō. On the lake’s southern
shores is Turangi, home of white water rafting, world-class
trout fishing and gateway to the skifields and hiking trails of
Mt Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park. To the west, you’ll
discover native forests, mountain bike trails, farms, hydro lakes
and peaceful Mangakino village.

Great Lake Taupō Region
The Great Lake Taupō region is situated on the Central
Plateau of the central North Island.
Dominant features are the massive aquatic playground, Lake Taupō
and, in the south, the snowfields and volcanoes of Mt Ruapehu and
Tongariro National Park. Kaimanawa Forest Park sprawls close to the
lake’s eastern shores and Pureora Forest Park lies to the west, both
parks and surrounding pine forests attract mountain bikers, hikers and
hunters. Taupō, the region’s main town sits on the lake’s northern edge,
while fishing town Turangi and geothermal village Tokaanu lie on the
southern shores. In the north is Waikato River hydro village, Mangakino.

This holiday town really knows how to turn it on for
visitors. From adrenalin-pumping adventure to laidback
relaxation, outdoor recreation choices are simply inspiring.
Bungy jumping and tandem skydiving head the thrillseeker options.
Jet boats will spin you and splash you (just a bit) on the Waikato
River, and nudge you into churning eddies at the base of the famous
Huka Falls.
If something more genteel appeals, you can walk the scenic path
beside the thundering falls, or amble the botanical reserve and
lakeside trails. Taupō is home to several international golf courses
(and a ‘hole in one’ challenge in the lake!), while purpose-built
mountain-biking trails range from easy, family-fun in the forest to
hard-out single track.
©Destination Great Lake Taupo
Lake Taupō is one huge aquatic playground, no matter what
your interest is. Take a fishing charter or dinner cruise. Skim the
surface on water-skis or quietly paddle a kayak along the forestfringed shore to where Maori rock carvings adorns steep bluffs.
Or just swim. Cool off in the crystal clear water on a hot day. It’s a
quintessential Kiwi family thing to do. You’ll find patches of thermally
heated water and it’s incredible to think of the cataclysmic blasts
– including the biggest recorded volcanic eruptions in the world –
that gouged the lake’s deep craters many thousands of years ago.

Taupō lacks nothing in sophistication when it comes to shopping,
wining and dining. There are a host of local designer stores,
specialist foodie shops, classy cafes, galleries and studios to explore.
However active, or inactive, you chose to be, you will want to
soak in a hot thermal pool. Since the fi rst Maori people lived
here the soothing powers of the mineral waters have been
appreciated. Be it a big pool shared with family and friends,
private tub, natural hot pool in the bush, or a thermal mud wrap
and massage at a health spa, healing waters are part of the Taupō
holiday tradition.
Did we mention events? Barely a weekend goes by when there
isn’t something arty or sporty going on. Each year, thousands fl ock
to the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain
IRONMAN New Zealand and Oxfam Trailwalker. Then there’s kapa
haka, celebrating Maori culture and dance, plus street art, golf

• Catch some thundering action at Huka Falls and Aratiatia Rapids.
The Waikato, New Zealand’s longest river, churns through a
narrow chasm at Huka Falls, the country’s most visited natural
attraction. For more ‘rapid action’ head a little further down river
and watch the Aratiatia Rapids surge free when the hydro dam
opens each day. (10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm summer; 10am,

• Smell the flowers.
You don’t have to climb a mountain to see our alpine plants,
you’ll find them, and more, in Taupō’s nationally-acclaimed Ora
Garden of Wellbeing and 85-acre botanical reserve. More floral
delights can be found at the Rose Gardens.
• Feel the restless earth.
Today’s tranquil Lake
Taupō was created by the
world’s largest recorded
volcanic eruption; forming
dramatic landscapes;
steaming cliffs, geysers
and bubbling mud pools.
Visit one of the region’s
lively geothermal sites,

• Get on the lake. Or above it. How is entirely over to you; sipping
a wine on a scenic cruise perhaps, buzzing about on water

own kayak. Or you could soar above the lake on a scenic flight,
parasail or tandem skydive.

Turangi
Regional Overview
14
Nestled on the southern shores of Lake Taupō is worldfamous fishing town, Turangi. However, there’s much
more to do here than net that big brown or rainbow trout.
Whitewater rafting the pristine, forest-lined Tongariro
River headwaters, for example, or walking or cycling
beside its less turbulent lower reaches.
Turangi welcomes holidaymakers in all seasons. As the gateway to
Tongariro National Park and Kaimanawa Forest Park, adventurers
can head to the hills for hiking and hunting, skiing and climbing,
mountain biking, gentle bush walking and bird watching, whatever
takes their fancy.
Nearby is historic Tokaanu village, long famous for its thermal pools
and geothermal features. It’s also a pleasant spot for some gentle
kayaking on Tokaanu Stream, or a short climb for great lake views
from the top of Maungamanu.

Cultural sites to explore reflect this region’s rich heritage. Rotoaira is
the birthplace of the famous Te Rauparaha haka, Kamate Kamate. Te
Porere Redoubt is the well-preserved defensive site of Maori leader
Te Kooti, and Waihi Village the home of Horonuku Te Heu Heu
Tukino IV, who gifted the scared mountain peaks, now the nucleus
of Tongariro National Park, to the Crown.

Regional Overview
Blue Lake Tongariro Crossing ©Destination Great Lake Taupo
16 Mt Ruapehu/Tongariro National Park
Dominating the central North Island landscape are the
volcanoes Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. These
are the mountains of the Tongariro National Park, one
of the world’s oldest national parks and also one of the
few national parks with dual, natural and cultural, World
Heritage status.
From Taupō, is it little more than an hours’ drive to these mountains, to
the winter ski-fields and snow and rock climbs and the summer time
hiking, including the incredibly popular Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
The mountains are a magnet for hikers, skiers, snowboarders,
climbers, also for those simply appreciating nature and the unique
volcanic landforms – and, yes, these are still active volcanoes!
The landscapes of Tongariro and Ruapehu are indeed diverse; snowy
peaks and ice cliffs, alpine tarns and tussocks, native forests and
wind-blown deserts and, everywhere, the overwhelming volcanic
presence; steaming rocks and crater lakes, silica springs and
towering lava cliffs.
Waterfall in Tongariro National Park©phoenex_ac
Little surprise then, these were the chosen settings for the most
sinister of the Lord of the Rings’ film locations, Mordor. Today, ardent
Tolkein fans make pilgrim-like visits to the park to explore ‘Mordor’,
‘Mt Doom’ and other spots where the hobbits, Gollum and Sauron
played out their roles in the Oscar-winning movies.
GreatLakeTaupo.com
Always allow
for more time
to explore than
you think – this
area is truly
world-class.
At lower altitudes, the Ruapehu region is a mosaic of greens; of
farmland and production pine forests, traversed by mountain bike
and quad-biking trails for those seeking off road adventure.
17
• Tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, rated by many as one of the
top one-day treks in the world. The lakes and craters and moon-like
landscapes will amaze you, but be sure to prepare for cold, windy
alpine conditions!
• Discover the many other fascinating (and shorter) walks that
also explore the volcanic mountains and forest landscapes. Try
Rotopounamu, off SH47, or Taranaki Falls, Silica Springs and Tama
Lakes that leave from Whakapapa Village, Mt Ruapehu.
• Pause to ponder this volatile landscape at the Rotoaira Lookout, on
SH47 between Turangi and Mt Ruapehu. Look across Lake Rotoaira
to Mt Tongariro and the steaming Te Maari Crater, which erupted in
2012 close to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
• Challenge your mountain biking skills on the 42 Traverse, a
challenging 46km route through dense forest and deep ravines.
Experienced riders only!
• Visit Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre at Whakapapa Village,
and watch the audiovisual dramatisations explaining the natural
and cultural history of this World Heritage park. Then sip a wine
and watch the window-framed sunset over Mt Ngauruhoe from the
opulent lounge of the historic Chateau Tongariro Hotel.
• The Department of Conservation Summer Programme is a
great way to get to know the region. Whether you’re into caving,
kite flying, kiwi spotting, hiking or seeing wild horses, there’s
something for everyone. See page 6.

Mangakino
Regional Overview
18
This peaceful village nestles beside Lake Maraetai, a hydro
lake surrounded by forest and rolling farmland yet less
than an hour from bustling Taupō. Whether you’re seeking
tranquillity or outdoor adventure, you’ll be happy in this
rural spot.
Lake Maraetai and neighbouring Lake Whakamaru were formed by
two hydro dams across the Waikato River; these massive concrete
structures are worth a look in their own right. The lakes make happy
aquatic playgrounds; water skiing, wake boarding, kayaking or just
swimming off the summer heat. If keeping dry is your preference,
take a cruise on the historic paddleboat, Otunui.
Cycle trails are popular all around this region and Mangakino is no
exception. It’s the midway point of the 100km Waikato River Trail that
follows New Zealand’s longest river, past five hydro lakes and five
dams. The trail is a mix of easy to more challenging grades.
Pureora Forest Park
©Destination Great Lake Taupo
Some of the grandest native trees in the country grow near Mangakino,
in Pureora Forest Park. Ecologist David Bellamy likened them to the
grand cathedrals of Europe. In the 1970s, tree-climbing protesters
forced the end of logging of these magnificent trees. Check out the
bush walks beneath towering totara, rimu and matai. And yes, there’s a
new cycle trail here as well, the 85km Timber Trail that sidles around the
forested flanks of park centrepiece, Mt Pureora and includes some of
the highest and longest suspension bridges in New Zealand.

Catching a trout, skiing on a volcano, biking through native
forest, swimming in a pristine lake, walking over mountain
tussock and soaking in a hot mineral pool make up the
essence of a Great Lake Taupō holiday.
The recreation choices here are infinite. The region is also home
to international golf courses, geothermal attractions and 200km of
mountain biking tracks and bush walks. Bungy jumping and tandem
parachuting up the action ante, while lake cruising and fishing are
longstanding traditions.
Turangi has lured fishing fans for more than 100 years. The deep, clear
pools of the pristine, forest-lined Tongariro River teeming with brown
and rainbow trout. Tongariro is also great for white water rafting and
‘funyakking’ – for all the family. Biking, hiking and hunting, bush walks
and culturally guided walks, indoor and outdoor rock climbing are also
options in this holiday town.
Laidback fun includes the trout hatchery, Tokaanu geothermal walk
and adjacent mineral pools, or visiting vineyards and beaches along the
southern lakeshore.
Turangi is also the gateway to Mt Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park,
long famous for winter sports. Combined, the Whakapapa and Turoa
skifields make up New Zealand’s largest ski area, while snow, ice and
rock climbing challenge those venturing ‘off piste’. In summer, thousands
converge on the iconic day trek, Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Shorter
walks explore beech forests, waterfalls, ancient lava flows and crater
lakes. Scenic flights, historic sites, and challenging mountain biking like
the 42 Traverse, add to the activity mix.

Taupō region has developed a magnificent selection
of places to stay, for all budgets. Whether you’re a
backpacking adventurer, a movie star angler or family of

resorts have also been drawn to this holiday destination.
If privacy is paramount, luxury apartments and holiday homes, each

cooking’s not your holiday thing.
If your taste is for more rustic comfort, fishing and ski lodges

of hosted accommodation, farmstays and B&Bs to choose from.
Holiday parks with cabins, campervan and tent sites, backpacker

Feel like a swim where you’re staying? Much of the region’s
accommodation offers a choice of hot mineral or cool freshwater
pools and private thermal tubs. Wherever you book, check the
Qualmark star rating. That’s New Zealand’s offi cial quality assurance
mark so you can be assured your accommodation choice has met
strict quality standards, whatever its star rating might be.

Much of Taupō’s shopping is boutique, locally-designed,
one-off and original. Yes, you’ll still find the big, designer
brands but definitely nothing bland.
Also, there are no multi-level shopping malls or cluttered car parks
to negotiate in this town and the parking’s free! Everything is very
pedestrian friendly, wandering the well laid out streets noted for their
names of the region’s mountains and famous ancestors.
Clothing and specialist sports stores can fit you out for all adventures
in the great outdoors, with stylish sportswear, soft merinos and
tough all-weather gear, much of it locally designed. High fashion is
also here, so you can dress with flair for that luxury lodge dinner.
Bring a truck to take home the homeware as you find intriguing and
luxury designer items – lamps, tableware, soft furnishings and one
entire shop devoted to the kitchen, with cooking and chefs’ wear.
Did we mention food? Specialist foodie shops or the weekly
Riverside Market will get you peckish. Choose from homemade
pastas, freshwater prawns, olives, oils, cheeses and chutneys and
let’s not forget local craft beers and the country’s top wine varieties,
all found here and with knowledgeable retailers to guide you.

Art galleries and glass studios are open for public viewing. Watch
the craftsmen and women at work and buy their personal creations
direct. You’ll find eclectic designs and Kiwiana touches, jewellery,
mosaics and sculptures. Perhaps you’ll find that special abstract
painting or print to take home to remind you of the striking
landscape here.
