Our second Lecture + Field Trip experience is dedicated to the prehispanic city of Teotihuacan. Teotihuacan was the most important capital of Ancient Mexico during the Classic period (200650). Its influenced can be traced in several areas and cities of Mesoamerica: Monte Albán, Tikal, Copán, etc. For the mexicas or Aztecs it was the place of the mythological creation of the Sun and the Moon of the Fifth Era and they inheritated a tradition the begun in that city. The monumental architecture is the distinctive element of Teotihuacan with its famous pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the Avenue of Dead and the great Feathered Serpent Temple. Not very well known for the general public is the magnificent mural painting tradition of the city. This art express the worldview of the ancient citizens and give us a closer look to their aesthetics ideas. In this cultural and travel experience we are going to explore some of the most significant places for them. LECTURE The main topic on the slideshow-lecture is going to be the significance of the sun in the Mesoamerican worldview, a review of archeoastronomical examples of prehispanic cities, and an introduction to the archeology of Teotihuacan. FIELD TRIP In this field trip we are going to visit the great city and ceremonial center of Teotihuacan. The city started as an small village but transformed itself on the most important multi-cultural capital in Mesoamerica. In our first stop we are going to visit the Sun and the Moon Pyramid, the Feathered Serpent Temple, the Quetzalpapalotl Palace and the Avenue of Dead, all located in the main archaeological site. After that we are going to visit some of the royal palaces located outside the main area to see some of the best examples of Teotihuacan Mural painting. We have dinner in a typical restaurant of the place and we end our field trip with a visit to the Martinez family Obsidian Workshop, a close-look to the main handicrafts of the area with one of the families that masters the work with the black obsidian stone. The Aspects of Mexico Lecture + field trip experiences are lead by Mexican anthropologist Alberto Aveleyra, manager of the cultural research and divulgation project Artisans of Time. Aveleyra has made research on Mexico history and cultures for the last 12 years, winner of the National Price of History on National Symbols.
