Dear Sunrise Orchards’ Customers,
Where did the summer go? Hard to believe that we are now thinking about fall and also starting to see the
signs with cooler nights and less daylight hours to get things done outside. We have certainly had an enjoyable
summer after braving a winter that we will remember for a long time to come. Spring and summer here at
Sunrise have been perfect for growing a beautiful crop of apples. As I’m writing this letter to you, the weather
is perfect although we could use a little rain. Fortunately, most of our apple trees are irrigated but a nice
gentle rain is always appreciated this time of the year. Because of the great weather we have been having,
we have a beautiful apple crop with size, color, and flavor as good as can be.
With the changing of the seasons and the changing of the calendar, we are busy getting ready for fall here at
the orchard. We have some new and exciting things once again this year. We planted over 9,000 new apples
trees so be sure to look for the new plantings as you drive down the road! We also built more deer fence to
protect our plantings from hungry creatures. We installed a state of the art automatic apple bagger and tote
bag filler within our packing facility. If you visit the orchard during the week, it will be visible from the retail
area. It is really neat to watch… the newest technology in the apple industry.
Of course, many of the old favorites will be here to enjoy. Delicious apple cider donuts, Honeycrisp and
regular Sunrise Apple Cider, Wisconsin Sunrise apples, and those mouthwatering cream cheese filled
pumpkin and carrot logs will be here as in the past along with our famous Sunrise Corn Salsa. There is
something for every taste at Sunrise Orchards.
We say it every year and we are saying it again. You are the reason that Sunrise Orchards is going strong.
We do everything possible to grow the highest quality apple for you and your family by being USDA/GAP/
GHP and Wisconsin state inspected. We have been growing apples for over 80 years, always
keeping you and your family in mind. We thank you for your friendship and your
business in the past and look forward to seeing you again this fall. There is fun for
everyone at Sunrise Orchards where we “Keep it Simple” for you. See you soon!

Caramel Apple Strudel
5 medium Sunrise apples, peeled and chopped (5 cups)
¾ cup Sunrise Apple Cider
¼ cup sugar
½ tsp. ground cinnamon
¼ tsp. ground allspice
¼ tsp. ground cloves
1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed
¼ cup caramel ice cream topping
1 egg
1 Tbsp. water
1 Tbsp. coarse sugar
Whipped cream and additional caramel ice
cream topping, optional
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large saucepan, combine apples, cider, sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and cloves. Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes until apples are tender, stirring occasionally. Cool apple mixture completely.
Unfold puff pastry on a large sheet of parchment paper. Roll into a 16x12 inch rectangle. Place short side of the rectangle facing you.
Using a slotted spoon, arrange apples on bottom half of pastry to within 1 inch of edges. Drizzle apples with caramel topping.
Roll up jelly-roll style starting with the bottom side. Pinch seams to seal and tuck ends under.
In a small bowl, whisk egg with water. Brush over pastry. Sprinkle with coarse sugar. Cut slits in top. Bake 25-30 minutes
until golden brown. If desired, serve with whipped cream and additional caramel topping.

What’s new at Sunrise?
For the 2014 apple crop, Sunrise has made more changes than any
year in recent memory. This spring we planted another 9,000 dwarf
McIntosh, Gala, and Honeycrisp apples trees using GPS to ensure
straight rows, just like row crop farmers do. Next, we added a deer
fence around one of our main orchards to eliminate winter deer
browsing on precious flower buds. Around the apple shed we updated
our office with a modern phone system which allows you to call any
time, day or night, and check our inventory of all grades of apples for
sale. Everyone in our family knows we all love our pets and to show
our appreciation, we have added a dog walk area just off the main
parking lot. Alongside the pumpkin sales area is a new pedal cart track
and horse tire swings for the kids. Probably our
biggest improvement will be new packaging for
number 2 grade apples. Gone are the plastic
bags replaced with 20 pounds of apples in recyclable boxes that will stack and not tip over on
the ride home. We think you are going to love these new boxes!
Apples A-Weigh - If you don’t have a scale but a recipe calls for 1 pound of apples, you can use
4 small apples, 3 medium sized, or 2 large apples. This should be approximately 3 cups diced.
However, you’ll need to make sure to buy 1 pound of apples if a recipe calls for 2 ½ cups sliced
apples or 1 ½ cups grated apples.
Sunrise Orchards Available Apple Varieties
We are often asked when apples are ripe and which variety is best for eating, baking, etc. This helpful chart
can guide you through what varieties to use - and when. Weather is very important in the ripening process
and we do not pick our apples until they are ready to eat.
Please note: These are approximate ripening dates. It’s best to call ahead if you are coming for a certain variety (608) 735-4645 or check the
updated variety chart at SunriseApples.com

The King Bloom
Apple trees have a very narrow window to produce seeds. Each apple “bud” contains 4 to 5
blossoms. In the center is the King, the most robust blossom. It opens first and is pollinated first…
or at least that’s what apple growers want to happen. If the grower
“sets a King Bloom crop” then the apple quality is usually superb.
Couple the King Bloom crop with ample thinning and a great
growing season and we will end up with some large, delicious apples!
But what about the other blossoms surrounding the King? We thin
them. All we want is the King Bloom.
However, if we have a weather event such as frost, rain, extremely
hot weather or very cool weather, then the King Blossom is rendered
infertile and the side or secondary blooms offer the tree another
opportunity to have a crop of apples. The secondary blossoms open
a day or so after the King Blossom. In most instances, one or two days is all that is needed to get
some apples to set. We call a secondary apple bloom crop a “side bloom” crop. The size and quality
are not as robust as a King Bloom crop, but with unknown weather and external factors we will still
have a nice apple crop.
In August of 2013, Sunrise lost one of its owners, Kevin Oppreicht, after a
long struggle with multiple myeloma. Kevin was responsible for apple harvest,
maintenance, and had many other duties here at the orchard but much more
than that, he was truly a “people person.” He was best known as the Gays Mills
Fire Chief for 25 years and helped countless people through the devastating
floods that affected our small community.
Kevin’s wife of 33 years, Laurie (Teach) Oppreicht, is responsible for the
creation of our famous apple cider doughnuts and he was often in the bakery
late at night helping her prepare for busy weekends. We all hold a special place in our hearts for
Kevin and miss him every day, but in his memory, we carry on the Sunrise tradition of growing
and harvesting the best apples we can for your family.
Join us at the Sunrise Orchards Food Stand
The Fennimore United Methodist Church will be serving food each weekend from our food stand. New this

the Christian Education Department and Missions.
