dear Friends,
this has been both a challenging and exciting year. challenging
because our children and families are facing so many difficulties in
these economically trying times. exciting because Children First
has been able to maintain our commitment to our children and
families when they need us most.
in the fall we sent 150 children off to Kindergarten or, as the kids
like to put it, “the big school!” With smiling faces and an eagerness
to continue learning, our children are ready to succeed. By working
with children from birth until they are five years old, Children
First provides them with what all children deserve — a safe and
nurturing environment, nutritious meals, and dedicated, excellent
staff.
Many of our parents rely on us as their extended “family.” Whether
they are taking one of our family strengthening classes like the
Nurturing dads class, career readiness for Women, or second time
around: grandparents raising grandchildren, or they need help and
support in facing a crisis, Children First is there for them. all of
this leads to families becoming stronger, empowered, and successful.
Because of you, we continue with our designation as a nationally
recognized Program of Excellence, one of 22 out of 2,700 in the
country. through your support our families achieve their dreams of a
better life. through your support, our children develop a lifelong love
of learning. through your support, we are all truly putting Children
First!
sincerely,
Nola Hietbrink

hildren first offers full-day early
childhood programs to over 600 lowincome children, ages birth to five, in
sarasota county. as the county’s designated
Head start & early Head start provider
we follow this high quality comprehensive
program model for all of the children we serve.
early head start the early Head start program was established
to serve low-income children from birth to three years of age
in recognition of the mounting evidence that the earliest years
matter a great deal to children’s growth and development. Our
programs enhance children’s physical, social, emotional, and
intellectual development; assist expectant families to access
comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care; support parents’
efforts to fulfill their parental roles; and help parents move
towards self-sufficiency. during the 2009-2010 school year,
children first began providing early Head start services for an
additional 120 children.
head start Head start is a national program that provides school
readiness services for children ages three to five from low-income
families. While focusing on the comprehensive needs of each
child, children first provides for their educational, health, social,
and developmental needs. With an ultimate goal of Kindergarten
readiness, our well-trained staff members provide children with
the stimulating and nurturing environment they need to thrive.
We rank in the top 1% of all Head start programs nationwide—a
recognition that only 22 out of 2,700 programs have earned. Our
program also works to engage parents as their child’s first teacher
and teaches them to be an advocate for their child’s educational
needs.
Meet Kaliyah.
She is almost 5. She’s been with Children First from early
Head Start through Head Start. Kaliyah loves to read, write, and most of all, loves music. You can
almost always catch her singing!
Children First has given Kaliyah the opportunity to explore different subjects and develop her own
interests. “She likes to do a lot of things on her own now. She’s much more independent”, says her
mother, amelia Mitchell. “the best part about Children First is how they interact with the family. there
are so many opportunities for parents to participate. It’s a great thing.” the impact that Children First
has on families like Kaliyah’s is invaluable. Her mother has been able to work to support her family
while knowing her children are getting high quality early education.

n 2011, the federal government mandated
that 100% of all Head start teachers have
a two or four-year college degree, and 100%
of all infant/toddler specialists have at least a
child development associate certificate with
an infant/toddler endorsement. children first
succeeded in meeting this requirement in 2010,
a year ahead of the mandate.
Beyond meeting the federal mandate for early childhood
educators, our staff members have a passionate dedication to the
mission of children first. approximately one-third are former
Head start parents who have grown within our organization. the
success of our programs is due to the commitment and quality of
our staff.
each year children first successfully transitions between 140160 children to Kindergarten. Our teachers design individualized
lesson plans for each child and work with parents to identify areas
of need. they are purposeful and intentional in their teaching,
utilizing every minute of every day as a learning opportunity in
their classrooms. through home visits, parent conferences, and
daily reports, our teachers create invaluable connections with the
families we serve.
I still remember the day in 1994 when elma McKay
walked into the restaurant where I was working as
a waitress. She was wearing a badge that read,
“now Hiring” and “ask me about Head Start.” I
had wanted to be a teacher ever since the summer
I spent as a teenager working as a teacher’s
assistant. elma kindly invited me to come to the
agency and fill out an application for a Head Start
teaching position. Her offer changed my life.
When my son Cyrus was one, I enrolled him in
Children First. He is now 12 years old and continues
to succeed in school. In 2001, I decided to go back
to school myself. In addition to supporting my son, I
wanted to make sure that I could meet the needs of
the children at Children First. I earned my aa degree,
and I’m now enrolled in a bachelor’s program for
early childhood education.
In 2008, Children First offered me a job as site
manager for the Helen payne Center, so I acquired
my Director’s Credential in order to be better
prepared. I hope that earning my bachelor’s degree
will allow me to obtain a leadership position at
Children First. My favorite thing about being in the
classroom is inspiring children to learn.

E
qually important to early childhood
education are the services children first
provides to the parents. these services
enable families to make productive life-style
choices so that they will be positive role models
for their children.
at children first, parents are active participants in their child’s
development and education. they are involved in a variety of
ways, including: volunteering in the classroom, sitting on advisory
committees and the Policy council, attending trainings, and
participating in parent-child activities sponsored by children
first in conjunction with other agencies in the community.
all families are assigned a family advocate to ensure the
entire family’s basic needs are being met at home and school.
each family creates an action plan to identify educational and
occupational goals and works with the family advocate toward
achieving these goals, and ultimately, self-sufficiency.
the agency also offers the Families First Initiative, which
provides free parenting and career readiness courses to anyone
in the community. the purpose of this program is to reduce the
effects of poverty through education, information, guidance, and
support.

Positive solutions for families
five essential Keys to Better Behavior
My oldest daughter and I both started at Children First in 1999 when she was 18 months old. over the
next three years, I gained knowledge and experience through on-going training courses offered by Children
First. My second daughter was welcomed into the loving arms of Children First at only 6 weeks old. During
my third pregnancy I was a single mother, thinking about going back to school and working full-time. I
can’t imagine what it would have been like without the loving support of Children First.
In 2008, I received my Child Development associate Certificate and in 2010, I obtained my level 2 Director’s
Credentials, the same year my youngest daughter graduated from Children First. this year, she was the top
reader in her Kindergarten class. My middle child has remained in advanced classes and continues to excel,
and my oldest has grand plans for her future and hopes to attend Cardinal Mooney next year.
I am now working toward my aa degree with plans to earn my bachelor’s degree at State College of
Florida. I have been employed by Children First for 12 years and am extremely grateful for everything the
organization has done and continues to do for me and my family.

n any given day, the dedicated staff
members of children first touch hundreds
of lives throughout our community,
offering educational, nutritional, health, and
parenting services to the young children and
families we serve.
However, this important work would not be possible without the
contributions of our donors and volunteers. We depend upon the
generosity of those in our community to fulfill our mission of
strengthening children and families.
Please consider sharing your support with children first.
Ways you Can support Children First
$50 provides paints and paper for little fingers.
$200 tells stories of faraway lands through new books.
$400 wraps little baby bottoms in clean diapers.
$500 nourishes growing children through afternoon snacks.
$1,000 feeds eager learners a nutritious breakfast.
$2,000 guides parents with positive behavior techniques.

You don’t have to be wealthy to make a significant gift to children
first. consider a Planned gift as a way to leave a legacy and
change the lives of hundreds of underprivileged, yet deserving
children. Make a gift that reflects your values and benefits your
family at the same time. Benefits may include:
• Making a gift that cost nothing during your lifetime.
• Giving stock and realizing larger tax savings.
• Generating incoming for life in return for your gift.
Making a significant impact in the lives of children is the heart
of children first. Make a gift that will keep on giving, keep on
impacting, and keep on changing lives.
When we started school, our parents were happy if we knew our letters
and could count from 1 to 10. today, the expectations are so much higher.
pre-Kindergarten experiences are assessed by tests like the Florida
Kindergarten readiness Screening.
We became involved with Children First when our youngest child was in
preschool. We are fortunate to have a son who was ready for Kindergarten.
But the playing field isn’t level for all Kindergarteners.
Children First provides a stable learning environment structured with
goals and expectations. It provides children with a strong foundation by
exposing them to art, science, and reading, giving them the tools to build a
successful future.
We can share our own success by providing the children of Children First
with the opportunity to reach their potential. thank you for giving the
children of Children First the head start that will change their lives.
