Guidance to tutors
This is a summative assessment that can be used to
help assess whether learners are ready to move on to
Entry Level 1. Learners have an opportunity to selfassess their work after completing the assessment by
circling a number under the emoticons.
The assessment is not graded but makes use of
comments and targets, recorded on the separate
feedback sheet, to progress learning. In this way the
assessment can also be used formatively, and targets
transferred to learners’ ILPs. The following are
guidelines on the performance expected for learners to
progress to Entry Level 1. Tutors may use their
discretion in applying the guidelines.

Task 1 No more than 2 errors.
Task 2 No more than 2 errors.
Task 3 Awareness shown of basic conventions of
filling in a form (line breaks in appropriate places, use
of capitals, no punctuation, correct format for
postcode). Spell correctly some key personal words
and familiar words. Form letters of the alphabet with
some accuracy in upper and lower case and use digits
1 to 9 with some accuracy.
Task 4 Include some relevant information. Construct
a simple sentence using basic word order. Use capital
letters and full stops. Use capital letter for pronoun ‘I’.
Use present simple tense. Spell correctly some key
personal words and familiar words. Write legibly.
