Prodaptation revives progress through adaptation,
envisioning “preservation” as a propellant of potential. Thusly,
prodaptive considerations creatively engage opportunities
of re-use, re-purpose, and re-invention. Consistent with
these ideals, our proposal seeks to proactively renew the
relevance of Pyramiden through innovative adaptation of
its existing infrastructure, that which extends beyond the
built environment.
Imagined in the year 2100, the arctic landscape appears
astonishingly different. Climate change, due to unrestrained
human consumption and resultant greenhouse gas emissions,
has caused both temperatures and sea levels to rise. Minimal
sea ice, which once severely restricted water navigation,
now enables residence at higher latitudes and opens new
routes for transporting goods. Conversely, such a dramatic
geographic transformation threatens the architectural
foundations of Pyramiden. Our proposal reinforces these
vulnerable footings by re-evaluating Pyramiden’s root of
place and principle natural resource: COAL.

Pyramiden in 2100
A prominent means of energy production worldwide, coal
is considered a primary culprit in the crippling climatic and
geographical disorientation. Conventionally, when burned,
coal emits harmful pollutants impacting the health of
humanity and its habitat. Recognition of these ill effects has
garnered ardent support for reducing utilization of coal in its
traditional sense. However, just as the 90’s crop top and highwaisted shorts are once again high fashion, prodaptation
anticipates the re-invention and re-emergence of coal’s
intrinsic value as a non-burned resource. In fact, current
pursuits indicate coal’s immense promise for catalyzing a
new industry of carbon based materials. The exciting recent
discovery of embedded quantum dots unlocks a plethora
of possibilities including the production of graphene.
In anticipation of assured breakthrough
developments in coal applications, our proposal
imagines the future viability of a cutting edge
laboratory and research facility dedicated to the
environmentally safe exploration and production
of coal based products and technologies.
These revolutionary advancements inspired and
enabled a dynamic form.

Eerie yet serene, an equation of striking natural beauty and
fleeting human occupation, Pyramiden’s brief moments of
historical significance relied on the region’s natural reserves.
So universally true, relevance = resources. With this in
mind, contemporary re-evaluation and re-imagination of
Pyramiden’s foundational resource explores future potential
progress through adaptation while also giving proper
consideration to historical context and function.
