May 2017 - Alamance Country Club

Alamance T oday
May 2017
From the Board
I hope everyone is enjoying their Spring and using the Club as often as possible. Have you had lunch
or dinner in the Ross Grill lately? The new menu is out and the response has been very positive. Some
old favorites remain on the menu, and some new soon to be favorites are catching on. Jonathan and
his staff are working hard to improve the professionalism and improve the time between ordering and
dinner served. Please remember that takeout orders now can be used to offset your restaurant
Ray Womack
minimum while renovations are underway. So please give the Ross Grill a try. Gerry is ready and waiting
Club President
to serve you your favorite beverage.
The next phase of the Clubhouse renovation is about to start. This phase will repair or replace our HVAC, plumbing, electrical,
leaking roofs, and other parts of the infrastructure that must be done. We are still on schedule for our October 1st reopening.

Social & Dining Event Marketing | Marketing club events is an area that requires constant innovation.
Technological platforms do a great job of connecting members, and ACC utilizes different outlets to get
the word out about the many fun and exciting things happening around the Club’s campus. Another
great marketing tool is good ole’ fashioned word of mouth. Many members attend club events when
another member picks up the phone and starts an invitation waterfall. One member invites another
member and before you know it, a group of 8 makes a reservation in the Donald Ross Grill for a night
of great food, friendship and cocktails.
Jonathan Spence
In addition to your highly appreciated efforts as a member to boost attendance, this May all social
General Manager
and dining events will be posted along a 2-month schedule on the web calendar and in the Alamance
Today newsletter. This way ACC members can plan further in advance in support of our club theme nights and special occasions.
Clubhouse Renovations | Aside from when the upstairs portion
of the clubhouse will open (scheduled for early October 2017),
many questions are asked on what the interiors will look like. In
an effort to keep the element of surprise in our dining/event areas,
offices and kitchen, a small concept rendering of the Magnolia
Room is posted in the image to the right. The Magnolia Room will
accommodate over 100 people with a mix of casual and upscale
cuisine. The room will be family and adult friendly, offering a wide
spectrum for all members alike.
The Saddle Club Lounge will remain an adult-only bar and
lounge. We are currently developing the hours of operation
and menu concepts for both a la carte dining areas and we
eagerly await the unveiling this fall. On the private event side of
our club food and beverage operations, we are developing a new
banquet event menu. As we move closer to October, more
information regarding the restaurant dining rooms and club special event policies will be posted.

Grand Opening Party | Please save the date for the club’s Grand Opening Gala for Friday, October 6, 2017. This special night
will celebrate and showcase the clubhouse enhancements with an opening ceremony, live music, dancing, and multiple food
stations and bars. Stay tuned for more information!
Pool Resurfacing Project Update | Our pool’s resurfacing project is currently experiencing some repair challenges that will likely
delay our seasonal opening. Nonetheless, our goal remains to do our very best to have the pool opened on Friday, May 26th
in time to kick off the season for Memorial Day weekend. Should we need to delay the opening, we will announce any pool
scheduling alerts via email blasts and Clubster alerts.
Around the Club | In April the golf course came alive and the fairways transitioned to a beautiful and vibrant green. Tennis
events have kicked into high gear and flowers around the club are beginning to bloom. Please congratulate our Director of
Fitness, Matt Sommer, for competing in the Boston Marathon in 3:14:59! Way to go Matt!!
As always, should you need anything, I am at your service.
Warmest regards,
Jonathan
Membership
It’s always an exciting time for me to be in the community on behalf of ACC. Most recently, Chef
Terri and I had the opportunity to support the local United Way by volunteering at their Taste of Alamance
luncheon. We organized and portioned out the food that had been donated for the luncheon. It was also
great to see such a wonderful turnout at the event by
our members.
Energy surrounding membership is growing.
Phone calls are coming in and I have had a steady
number of tours scheduled over the last few weeks.
The prospective members always feel such a warm

your stories. I greatly appreciate those of you who
have sent me leads. We are excited to welcome new
members below. Don’t forget we are offering a $500 house credit if you
sponsor a new member.

From Tee to Green
Peter Horn, CGCS
Director of Golf Course
and Grounds
Our greens are healing well from aerifying. By the first week of May we will work to get the speeds
back we had in early April. On the bermuda grass side I see no large areas of winter kill. Just small
patches of spring dead spot which are the small circular patches you see in the fairways. These will fill
in when we have temperatures consistently in the 80s. We cut all the bermuda grass the end of April.
We set the mowers to cut low to help even out the grass and get the puffy look out. This should help
the playability and give a more consistent lie.
Our tree limbing went well this year, and were able to get in areas we haven't been in years. The
work we did will help get sunlight to the grass where it is needed. We also removed many dead and
broken limbs. This has been, and will be a work in progress for many years. We had a tree company
remove several trees behind #8 tee to allow better sunlight to reach the right side of #7 green complex.
They also removed several trees that were showing rot and decay. If you saw the stumps before we
ground them you could see the decay making it a danger to fall in a storm.
We will work on a couple of projects before we get into the mowing season. We will add some irrigation to a few dry areas that are in play. This will help improve the turf for better play-ability. We also
renovated the landscaping around the front of the sign on ten. Hopefully this will be finished as you
read this.
Hopefully you will be able to come out and play the course this spring. It is in good shape and will
get better as spring moves forward. I want to thank the Golf Course Maintenance Crew for all their
hard work to bring the members the best course and playing conditions we can.

Junior Tennis
USTA 10 and Under Quick Start Tennis
Our 10 and Under Quick Start Tennis clinics have been a huge hit over the past four years. As a reminder, our Quick Start
clinics are structured for kids to learn, rally and play in a way that is both enjoyable and rewarding. We also have customized
equipment and courts, so they are sized appropriately for kids and make the game more fun.
The shorter and narrower courts give kids the confidence and ability to cover the entire court. Racquets are smaller and
lighter. Kids have trouble controlling full-sized racquets because they are too long, too heavy, and the grips are too large.
• Quick Start racquets are proportionate in length and weight, and have the grips that fit smaller hands allowing
for more control (21”, 23”. 25”).
• Balls bounce at a height equal to kids’ playing abilities which provides for better and longer rallies and allows
kids to build all-court games (Red, Orange, Green).
ACC Tennis offers three Quick Start programs suited to fit the age and skill of your child. Please contact Stefan to register
and for an age/skill assessment • 336.584.4115

Junior Play Days | Saturdays | 9:30am - 10:30am | Ages 8 and Up
All juniors ages 8 and up are encouraged to come out on Saturday mornings from 9:30am - 10:30am for organized play and
games. Juniors will be separated by age and skill level, and will participate in fun on-court competition and match play. This
is not a teaching clinic, but more of a play clinic. Players should be able to rally with their appropriate level ball (red, orange,
green). Fee: $10

allowing kids to get involved right from the start. By being introduced to the Quick Start Tennis play format from the start
your kids will gain confidence by seeing their own immediate progress, making them more enthusiastic about continuing to
play and improve. ACC Tennis offers three Quick Start programs suited to fit the age and skill of your child.

Happy Anniversary! Can you believe it
has been 12 years since the doors of the
fitness center opened for the first time?
We will only continue to grow, and I can
only look forward to fulfilling the needs and
desires of the membership. My staff and I
have thoroughly enjoyed the past twelve
years and look forward to the years to
come. Thanks again for all the support.
As always, please feel free to contact me
if you have any questions, concerns, or
compliments. My door is always open.
In good health,
Matt
