A message from Rev. Caro
It is with great delight we can announce the new appointment to the Benefice. It is
the Revd Laura Hill, Team Curate, Bridgnorth & Morville Parishes Team Ministry.
She is being appointed as our next Incumbent Designate and is being installed at 7pm
on Wednesday, 13th July at Stapleton.
Her first service is a Group Service at Dorrington on Sunday 17th July 2016 at
10:30am.
Our two Archbishops sent a letter to the clergy in Lent and I quote:
‘Thy kingdom Come, thy will be done…..A Call to Prayer in the week leading up to
Pentecost 2016’
Pentecost is on Sunday May 15 and we will be holding a special Group Service to
celebrate this. This will take place in Longnor Church beginning at 11.00am with a
Picnic following, so do please come and bring friends and family – and your picnic! –
In our meeting of Puppet Praise in the preceding week, on Tuesday 10 May we will be
making things for our Pentecost service, and we very much hope that as many
children as possible will be able to join us for this festive service.
There is a day of prayer on Wednesday 11 May in Church Stretton, as a part of the
lead up to Pentecost.
Pentecost is the Birthday of the Church and a great cause for celebration.
You will see plenty of activities taking place in our Benefice during May, do come and
support them, they are all listed on the back page of the magazine.
I would be surprised if anyone reading this letter has not, at some time in their lives,
asked the question ‘Why do bad things happen to good people?’ Certainly it is a
question I am used to having put to me. If you would like to explore this do please
come to Leebotwood Village Hall on Wednesday 4 May by 7.30.pm and listen to
Joanne Dyer our Filling Station speaker.
We always aim to finish by 9pm.
Please pray for Laura and her family as they prepare to come and live amongst us as
she has been appointed Incumbent Designate. She is also one of the 4 clergy
representatives of our Diocese on the General Synod.
Blessings,
Revd Caro

Letter from the Dean
I recently attend the National Conference of Deans – this year at Liverpool. We
divided our talks and worship between the two cathedrals – Anglican and Roman
Catholic. The legacy of David Shephard and Derek Warlock of the 1980s lives on
and there are warm relationships between the two denominations – and this in a
city which has seen great sectarian violence in the past. One of our talks was given
by Archbishop Paul Gallagher – now a high ranking Nuncio in the Papal diplomatic
service. I remember him from when I was a student, in 1981-2 at the English
College in Rome. Two Anglican theological students, each year, spent four months
living and working at the Roman Catholic college, right in the heart of Rome. It was
an experience which left a huge impression on me and I’ve kept in touch with quite
a few since those days. It was a challenge – how we maintain our Christian love
and charity when sometimes holding very different views. It had its hilarious
moments, too...from my diary for 22 October, 1981:
“The neighbouring church of San Lornezo is having a ‘forty hours devotion’ of the
Blessed Sacrament, so I go next door to look on. As the procession of the
Sacrament is forming up, one of the servers turns to me and asks if I’m from the
college. On replying ‘si’ he gets me to carry one of the 8 poles attached to the
canopy over the Sacrament. Dressed in my jeans, the only religious garments
provided are a pair of white nylon gloves, which I don. The procession sets off –
alas my ‘other half’ on the canopy is an Italian man about four feet tall, so our end
of the canopy bucks and stutters, rather like a pantomime horse.....”
I mention this, not only to re-iterate my oft-made plea that humour and laughter in
the church are really rather important but also to make a more serious point about
a feast which happens this month. Corpus Christi – Thursday 26 May. A day when
we remember that the Holy Sacrament is a vital part of our spiritual life. A day
when we remember that we should always try to prepare properly to receive the
Sacrament – when we examine our lives – when we make ourselves ready to meet
‘the king of kings and lord of lords’ in Holy Communion. At the cathedral, the feast
is kept with great splendour - there’s a period of silent prayer before the Blessed
Sacrament 3.30 – 4.30 and then the Eucharist and Procession at 5.30pm. But if you
can’t come to that, do remember the feast in your prayers – review how you
prepare to receive the Sacrament regularly - and recall those wonderful words of St
Thomas Aquinas:
O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see,
May what we thirst for soon our portion be,
To gaze on thee, unveiled, and see thy face,
The vision of the glory and thy grace.

Having popped into the church today I see that there is almost a full load ready for

Longnor and Dorrington School News
Longnor Primary School
We had a lovely Easter Service before the holiday with each
class acting out part of the Easter story. The youngest children
acted out Jesus riding into Jerusalem, they borrowed a well
behaved pony who was prepared to act as a donkey for the
occasion. Class 2 then presented the last supper using the picnic tables in
our school grounds. This was followed by Class 3 who used our outdoor
classroom to act out the scene from the Garden of Gethsemane. The older
children retold the trial, then we all processed across to St. Mary’s church
where we completed the story with the crucifixion and resurrection. The
children had learnt some wonderful Easter songs which they sang with the
parents in church.
The whole school has been considering waste and how to reduce the
amount we produce. As part of this work one class had a competition to
make a model using waste materials. They had great fun producing some
creative and very imaginative models; we had kitchens, rockets and even a
model teacher. Over the Easter holidays the challenge was extended to the
rest of the school, we look forward to seeing what is produced.
As we start the summer term each class is moving on to a new topic. Class 1
will be studying pets, Class 2 are looking at Japan and famous people, Class
3 has a World War Two theme and Class 4 will be looking at Britain since
1940. There are many exciting trips and visitors planned to enhance these
topics. Forest School is taught in every class throughout the year, during the
summer term the younger children will be going to the woods in Cantlop for
their Forest School sessions. There are many sports events booked for this
term and the School Circle has a lot of activities planned, so we are looking
forward to a busy and exciting term.

Dorrington Primary School
The end of the Spring term was very busy. The Dorrington
Sports Relief Mile was supported by pupils and their families
and the school had a mufti day, dressing up in sports kit to
raise money for Sport Relief.
Many parents and carers came to our Earth & Beyond Day, where the
children shared the work they had done during the term. There was a lot of
interesting things to see, with displays and activities to observe. Well done
to everyone for their hard work.
Years 5 & 6 arranged and presented the Easter service in St Edward’s
church, which included the writing of prayers and readings about the
meaning of Easter. It was enjoyed by all the children, staff and families that
attended.
We were very sad to say goodbye to Mrs Mandy Turner, who taught Class 1
part-time for the last two years and will be greatly missed. We welcome
Mrs Lauren Thorne as an additional teacher this term. The school also
welcomes Miss Sarah Bishop as a new Teaching Assistant.
To end the term we had the Hip Hop Bunny Bop school disco. Lots of fun
was had dancing, face painting and making Easter crafts and the Easter
Bunny visited! Thank you to the PTA for organising and to all the families
for supporting.
Over the Easter holidays a new pedestrian gate with intercom and new
fencing were installed at the school. This improves pedestrian access and
provides better safeguarding protection. In the summer, we have an even
bigger building project happening with the construction of the new lobby at
the front of the school.
We now look forward to the Summer term. Our school theme is Ancient
Greece and there will be lots of other activities and events to look forward
to including Outdoor Learning, focusing on Science and many sports activities.
Please visit our website for further information about our School

At our April meeting members were due to arrive at
7.30pm for the cookery demonstration.
The business done, our President, Mrs Bridget Thurgood,
welcomed everyone and introduced our demonstrator,
Sue Bradley and her Assistant, Jeanette White. Recipe sheets, entitled 'Easy
Entertaining’, were handed out. Seven mouth watering dishes were made,
giving tantalizing aromas, and by the end of the evening members could
hardly wait to taste them. Sue started with canapes and finished with a
chocolate dessert.
She told us she had only just come back from a weekend at the WI's own
Denman College. She said it was a very special place. It is a beautiful
Georgian mansion set in its own grounds, but a lot of money is now needed
for repairs and upkeep.
Top Tips: Use a clean nylon pastry brush to get the zest left on a grater - no
waste!
Put chocolate in a small piping bag and place on top of the warm cooker.
This causes the chocolate to melt, then it's all ready to drizzle for decoration.
Visitors also enjoyed a supper served up by our own members. The raffle
prize winners were: Monica Charley, Glenda Ellitts, Zena Renalds and Alwyn
Benbow. The competition winner was Bridget Thurgood.
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 10th May. For further details

This months meeting in Leebotwood followed a beautiful
spring day with lots of warm sunshine with members
hopefully in gardening mode for our evening’s speaker.
A craft workshop day has been booked for October
15th with members to decide which craft to do at a later meeting.
The summer outing was discussed and a date to be decided at the next
meeting, names were taken.
New guidelines for health and safety at WI meeting were mentioned.
The ‘Flower of the Month’ competition was won by Margaret Wilcox.
Business was soon dealt with and our speaker Jessica Pannett and assistant
Angela were welcomed. We have had previous talks from Jessica and tonight’s was on ’Containers and Hanging baskets’. We were encouraged to
grow new potatoes in sacks, carrots, dwarf French and runner beans, salad
leaves and tomatoes in pots with lots of cautions and advice on drainage,
compost and feeding. No excuse now!
Angela demonstrated lining and planting a hanging basket whilst Jessica
advised on types of plants and how to take cuttings. A thoroughly good informative evening giving us ideas and enthusiasm for this years planting.
Audrey Barclay thanked her for a very enjoyable and entertaining talk.
Next months meeting is at Leebotwood village hall on May 11th at 7.30pm.
The talk is given by Peter Hawthorne on The Animal Victoria Cross.
Visitors welcome, contact 01743 718044 for further information.
