model of the popul ar Stinson 150,
break out the CO 2 " cartridges, and fly
this plane inside or outside.
• Somet hing new has been added
to model a:viat ion-th e Campu s A100 CO" ... an engine so tiny that
it. takes trained jewele rs to tool
and assemb le it. Its size makes
possible contro l-line models with
a 12" wing span weigh ing about
one ounce -and fre e-fligh t jobs
with an 18" span having about the
same weigh t-givi ng you the opportun ity to build true miniat ure
planes in every sense of the word.
We selected the Stinso n 150 for
our first protot ype because its
scale propor tions lend themse lves
to model flying, and because of its
good looks and design feature s.
The one-ounce limit on weigh t.
gave us a few bad mome nts- but
a profile job solved this.
The next proble m which arose
was buildin g the wing and stabilizer. To use built-u p constr uction
on anythi ng this small and difficult seemed "an unnece ssary waste
of time and effort. So we used
good straigh t-grain ed sheet balsa,
1/32" thick, which proved perfec t
for these section s. With ordina ry
care in sandin g these memb ers
proper ly, the be s t w~ight-to­
streng th ratio can be obtain ed

with a minim um of time and
effort.
This type 8.)f constr uction lends
itself handil y to all types of models in this catego ry. Just utilize
the P1'ofile of your favori te scale
solid model.
CONS TRUC TION: Start with
firm, straigh t-grain e,P 1/ 13 " square
strips for th e longer ons and uprights. Then, select a VI3" thick
sheet of balsa of the same weigh t
and texture , to form the nose section and windsh ield outline .
The slot in the fuselag e which
is to contai n the "fuel" tank
should natura lly be measu red
right from the tank itself. A good,
snug fit at this section will serve
to hold the tank in its proper
positio n. The engine is then cemented in place On the front upright, using two or"three coats of
cemen t to insure a strong bond.
The extrem e simpli city of the
landin g gear can be seen on the
photog raph. Use the full -size template given on the plan for your
strut pattern . By cutting the strut
half-w ay throug h and then bending, the correc t angle is almost
autom aticall y assure d. The tr~ad,
or width of the gear, is also shown
on the plan. When the strut has
been bent correc tly, simply cemen t
it to the bottom of 'the fuselag e
at the place indica ted.

The skin is light-g rade, rubber type silkspa n., The fuselag ejlhou ld
be covere d one side at a time. Also
water- dope and clear-d ope the one
side before startin g on the other:
Doing this preven ts the wet paper
from meetin g and stickin g together betwee n uprigh ts.
The wing, stabili zer, and rudder are outline forms, as mentioned hereto fore. Simply apply a
piece of the tissue along their
.leadin g edges, both on top and bottom as well as over the leadin g
edges, to preven t their" cracki ng.

A single line linen thread is the
only requir ement for contro l-line
flying. Cemen t the end of this
thread to the under part of the
wing af the tip end, about lis"

of the line will be determ ined, of

ing will be done. The larger the "air-'
port,1f the longer the lin'e.
FLYING: Start off by hand-launching the model, to ' familiarize you r self
with its flight characteristics. After
thorough testing, the Lilliputt will bring
many happy landings to the fl ier and
audience.
We intend to try movable controls
on our next job, now that we have all
the bugs out of our ·system. Why not
try this yourself after you are completely satisfied with the model's flyin g
ability?
One precaution: 1f the control li,nes
are shorter than five feet in length, do
not try to :;0 around with the model.
The Lilliputt is much too fast for this
J'adius-it will be almost a lap ahead of
you before your wits are coordinated
and, Brother, that dizziness !

After cementing the joint about three '
times, allowing it to dry thoroughly between coats, the wing may be removed
from the board and the bottom side of
the joint coated several times with
cement.
While waiting between coats of cement on the wing - joint, the fuselage
may be carved and sanded to the shape
shown in
sections
on the plan.
the

is obtained,

The glider is now ready for assembly
-the most important part of its construction. Since all parts of a handlaunched glider are cemented permanently, misalignment at this point can
mean the waste of a lot of good time and
material; so proceed with care-it will
payoff in the end.
First, cement the stabilizer in position, making sure that no positive or
negative incidence is introduced. When
this is dry, complete the tail! assembly
by cementing the rudder in place. The
rudder and stabilizer can now be used
to sight on to insure proper alignment
of the wing. Hold the wing in place with
pins while the cement is drying, to insure against any shift in its position .
Finally go over all joints again with a
coat of cement, and the model is ready
for finishing.
A smooth glossy finish can be obtained by first giving the fuselage two
coats of thin wood filler, sanding after
each coat with fine sandpaper- No. 280
waterproof will ·do nicely. Next apply
two coats of clear dope, sanding after
each coat with No. 320 waterproof
sandpaper. Finally, for a high gloss and
to add flexibility to the control surface,
give the model one coat Of glider polish
or top coat, which can be purchased at
your local model shop.
The model is very stable and no difficulties should be experienced in adjusting it if all the surfaces are aligned
properly.
