MESSAG E FROM TH E PRESIDENT
We at Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel are very fortunate to be part of
such a vibrant congregation, offering countless opportunities for us to connect
with each other. As president, I am fulfilled and proud when I notice the exciting
changes that have come to our community. It is truly heartwarming to see our
members singing beautiful Sephardic melodies, praying at the daily minyans,
gathering among other families at the monthly Shabbat dinners, and interacting
with each other at our various events.
Ben Mehdizadeh, President
Ensuring that the Temple is a meaningful part of every congregant’s life, Rabbi
Sessler, Rabbi David, and Cantor Mizrahi, with help from our staff, our Board of Directors, our committee chairs, our numerous volunteers, Or Chadash Sisterhood
and Men’s Club, all put in countless hours to make Sephardic Temple a place that
is our spiritual, educational and a communal home. I would also like to acknowledge our dedicated preschool director, Eva Wysoki, and her entire staff for their
tireless work. After all it’s seeing happy children run around and enjoy their day at
ECC that makes all our efforts for establishing the preschool worthwhile. It truly is a
labor of love. I extend my deepest gratitude to all of them.
That being said, all the hard work of the above individuals is meaningless unless we have support from you,
our members. Open yourselves and play a significant part in this amazing community of ours. There are
countless opportunities for you to get involved on so many levels. Attend the daily minyan – it’s only 45
minutes in the morning; Attend the adult education programs; Support the beneficial and fun events that have
been so diligently organized; Become a volunteer in your favorite committee. Not only will you be fulfilled by
helping your community, but you will also be a role model for your children.
There are two ways to look at your temple membership. Membership may be seen as a way to receive
services, or it can be viewed as an adoption of the synagogue into your daily lives. Look at Sephardic Temple
as one of your family’s most valuable belongings. It not only enhances your existence today, but also helps you
maintain and preserve Judaism in generations to come. It must be nurtured by you so that it survives, strengthens, flourishes, and provides sustenance to the next generation. L’dor V’ador.
It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as your president. I hope that my passion for all things Sephardic
Temple Tifereth Israel and my love for our community will inspire others. Passover is a celebration of the
freedom our ancestors dreamed of, fought for, and ultimately won. But even as we give thanks, we are
called to look to the future, and the future looks bright my friends.
Let us take a moment to pause and reflect, to embrace our loved ones, and to give thanks for our countless
blessings. My family and I wish you a warm home filled with loved ones, a meaningful Seder, a beautiful
spring, and a Passover that reflects the goodness of life. Chag Sameach.

MESSA GE FROM RABBI SESSLER
Passover has many nicknames: the festival of the matzoth (in the Torah), the
festival of the spring (in more recent times), and also – “the time of our freedom”
(in the prayer book).
I am writing these words a day after my return from the AIPAC policy conference,
which was a spectacular celebration of the Jewish state’s freedom, independence
and fortitude. The speakers at the conference highlighted and stressed Israel’s
many achievements, including its economic robustness (Israel was one of the
countries least affected by the global economic crisis during the last half a
decade). Culturally, Israeli art is diverse and prolific, achieving international recognition and acclaim. Militarily, Israel’s strategic alliance with the US is at its peak.
Scientifically, Israel is considered one of the world’s most innovative and dynamic
information technology centers. With all of Israel’s geo-political challenges and existential threats, she is a regional
superpower and a powerful player in the international arena on multiple levels.
This year’s AIPAC conference was the best attended in history, with some fourteen thousand people present.
One of the things that surprised me, was the diversity of the attendees. There were Hispanic delegates,
African-American delegates, Evangelical Christians, and other non-Jewish delegates. I think that these diverse
groups attended the conference because Israel is much more than a particularistic national project. Israel is an
inspirational and universal story, exemplifying what happens when human beings achieve, through faith and
sacrifice, “the victory of possibility over probability”.
With scarce natural resources and surrounded by a sea of enemies, Israel is a vibrant and robust state, despite
the many voices who throughout the years rejected its very plausibility and viability, be it prior to its establishment in 1948, before and during its existential wars of 1948, 1967, and 1973, and to the wrath of those who
even today have the temerity to call for its isolation and eventual dissolution.
Israel’s political resurrection after some 20 centuries in exile, is an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of
humankind. No scriptural passage captures more forcefully and poignantly this miraculous achievement than
Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones (Ezekiel 37), in which this mystical prophet envisages a group of dry bones
scattered in a valley miraculously re-gathered, reintegrated, and re-covered with flesh and skin. Not only does
Israel exist and survive, Israel thrives. Each time I visit the country I am amazed at how strong it is.
As we sit with our relatives and friends around the Seder table, let us recall how incalculably privileged a
eneration we are, to live in an era of Jewish political sovereignty in our spiritual homeland. Let us celebrate and cherish the many freedoms that we enjoy as Americans and as Jews, and most importantly – let us thank the Almighty.
PA S S O V E R 5 7 7 4 / 2 0 1 4
4
Let us celebrate the 20th century’s many exoduses of our families from the darkness of oppression and
persecution in unfriendly lands. Let us ponder how we can intensify and deepen our bond with the land and
the people of Israel, and how we can grow in Torah and mitzvoth – our nation’s ultimate mission statement.
And let us remember that what our people achieved collectively – the resurrection of the dry bones as envisaged by the prophet Ezekiel, is also applicable with regard to our personal lives. We too can resurrect within
us shattered emotional limbs and spiritual tissues, reconnect with deadened and numbed aspects of our soul,
and start thriving again to the astonishment of others, and despite even our own skepticism and self-doubt.
I leave you with President John F. Kennedy’s reflections about Israel, words articulated more than half a century
ago, yet they still resonate in their poetic pathos as politically contemporary and pertinent for today:
“Israel was not created in order to disappear – Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope, and the
home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity, nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of
democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom”.
Happy Festival of Freedom,
Rabbi Sessler
Rabbi Sessler, Ben Mehdizadeh with Sheriff Lee Baca
during a visit with Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister
of Israel.

MESSA GE FROM R ABBI DAVI D COHEN -H ENR IQUEZ
Pesach is the Jewish educator’s holiday ‘par excellence’
The Seder’s main objective is education. We encounter in the Haggadah, multiple
approaches to learning: through music, through text study, through legends and
parables, through edible symbols and through questions. The most important thing
is to always make it new and relevant. That’s why the rabbis devised this incredible
pedagogical guide, and even encouraged creativity from the individual families, to
add your own ideas to the chain of tradition.
The Haggadah tells us about four children; these can be interpreted as four
archetypes, or four types of learners, or even four different stages in a person’s life.
We have the Wise, the Rebellious, the Simple, and the One who doesn’t know
how to ask questions.
As principal of our Religious School and Rabbi of the youth I feel everyday is a
Pesach Seder. Every day we, the educators, have to be creative in the way we are
teaching and continuing our rich traditions. To transmit knowledge from one generation is, of course, our duty
as parents and teachers, but to instill the spirit of love to this knowledge, that’s where the challenge lies.
The Talmud Torah teachers are always looking to find ways to make our teachings engaging and meaningful to
the young generation. We must also appreciate that each child has their own unique experience and they all
have their own individual point of view. There are children who love the religious aspects of our traditions
while others prefer to study about Israel’s history and the cultural side of Judaism. Both equally interesting,
challenging and engaging. There are kids who love the holidays for their traditions and meaning, and there are
others who come for the social aspect, to spend fun times with their friends and family. There are also some
who come because of obligation to their parents and they have to prepare for their bar or bat mitzvah. These
kids are not rebellious or removed from their heritage; these are the ones who haven’t been exposed to the
beautiful traditions and have not yet learned the richness of their faith. They will!
Modern commentators have added a fifth child: the one who doesn’t come to the Seder anymore. These are
the ones that have left the path of Judaism and don’t feel the connection of belonging. It is our duty as parents
and educators to teach, instill and learn to love our Judaism. Our attitude and approach can, will and must
become our sacred mission to help these children, your children, become wise men and women,
God-Searchers, spiritual beings, community leaders and proud Jews.
May the knowledge of our ancestors never cease to be transmitted, and may the light of Torah and mitzvot
never depart from the House of Israel. May this Pesach and all the holidays to come bring inspiration to you and
your family to continue this most sacred commandment of them all: to pass it on from generation to generation.
Cynthia and I wish you and all your loved ones a happy and wonderful Seder and may G-d’s blessings give
you peace and joy as you celebrate our liberation from slavery.

Rabbi David Cohen-Henriquez, Talmud Torah Principal

MESSA GE FROM HAZAN MI ZRAHI
The Festival of Pesach, the Season of Our Liberation, comes around every year not merely to
remind us of the Liberation of our ancestors from Egyptian bondage, but also to inspire us to strive for a greater
measure of self-liberation from all limitations and distractions. This is the meaning of the highly significant passage
in the Haggadah:
“In every generation a Jew should see himself as though he
personally has been liberated from Mitzrayim [Egypt].”
The celebration of the festival of freedom must be connected with the
commandment “You shall relate it to your child.” The formation and
existence of the Jewish home, as of the Jewish people as a whole, is
dependent upon the upbringing of the young generation, both boys
and girls: the wise and the wicked (temporarily), the simple and the
one who knows not what to ask. Just as we cannot shirk our responsibility towards our child by the excuse that “my child is a wise one;
he will find his own way in life therefore no education is necessary for
him”; so we must not despair by thinking “the child is a wicked one;
no education will help him.” For, all Jewish children, boys and girls,
are “G-d’s children” and it is our sacred duty to see to it that they all
live up to their full potential; and this we can achieve only through a
kosher Jewish education, in full adherence to G-d’s Torah.
Then we all will merit the realization of our hopes: “In the next year may we be free; in the next year may we
be in Jerusalem!” Amen!
I wish you and all your family a Chag Kasher v’Sameach.

TALMUD TORAH
Regina Hirsch, Holocaust Survivor,
Talks to the Talmud Torah Students
On Thursday, March 20, 2014, fourth through seventh graders spent over one hour listening to the personal
story of survival from Regina Hirsch. For two months now these students have participated in a Holocaust
study program each Thursday. They viewed two films, Paper Clips and The Lady in Number 6. They toured
the new Anne Frank exhibit at the Tolerance Museum. They have conducted research on
the children lost in Terezin and have discussed the hopes and
fears children and adults shared each day during the Holocaust.
Regina Hirsch shared her story to the students. Her memory is
vivid, picture perfect, as if this experience happened yesterday. Regina has been speaking to groups for over 60 years and
feels it so very important to share her story so that future generations will understand what happened to 11,000,000 human
beings. Regina was 12 when she and her family went into hiding, but in 1943 they were found in the woods and taken to
Terezin. She remembers her mother being taken away with her
younger sister as they left the train. She worked with two other sisters in an ammunitions factory. After liberation and a few years in a displaced persons
camp, she and her two surviving sisters came to America.
Today they live near each other on Wilshire.
The students asked such wonderful questions and Regina mentioned that this was the first time she was asked questions by
students. The one lesson Regina wants the children and all of us
to take with us every day is that we need to love every body. We
are all humans no matter what color, size, language or religion.
We need to rise above the hatred that caused the mass murder of
millions of human beings. Meeting Regina Hirsch was a treat for
the students, teachers and parents who attended the talk. We all
thank Regina for her time, her story and her grace.

MAURICE A MA DO MERIT AWARD FUND

Completed application should be sent to Vicki
Karmona at the Temple Office or e-mailed to

Apply Now for Your Children
to Have a Summer of Fun!
College Scholarship Awards
for Sephardic Students
Did you know that our Sephardic Temple has a
special fund that makes awards to young people to
attend Jewish summer camps and other Jewish
programs? Many families enjoy this benefit of
Temple membership each year–have you considered being one of those families this year?
Students who are pursuing higher education as
undergraduate or graduate students are eligible to
apply for merit-based scholarship awards from our
Temple. Eligibility for these awards is one of the
significant benefits of membership in our Temple.
The awards are not based on financial need.
The awards, made from the Maurice Amado Merit
Award Fund, are designed to encourage our young
people ages 6 to 24 years old to participate in programs that enrich their Jewish education. The awards
are not based on financial need. All that is required is
proof of Temple membership and proof of enrollment in a Jewish day camp, a Jewish residential
camp, an Israel program, or any other organized and
supervised Jewish program; for example, March of
the Living, youth tours to sites of Jewish importance,
and youth leadership development programs.
The funds are distributed according to categories,
with preference going to students who are Temple
members themselves or are children or grandchildren of Temple members. If funds are available,
Sephardic students who do not belong to our
Temple may also be granted awards.
The scholarship awards come from funds established
through the generosity and vision of some of our
remarkable Temple members. The majority of the
funds come from the Maurice Amado Scholarship
Fund. Awards are also made from the Maccabean
Fund, the Sephardic Beth Shalom Fund, and the
Aron Cohen Fund. This last fund is directed at
students who are pursuing careers as Sephardic
clergy or educators.
Jewish camping has been found to be one of the
most effective methods of Jewish education,
ensuring a Jewish identity in adulthood. It is so effective because it is a complete immersion experience where Jewish values are lived and modeled
by the staff, where the rhythm of the week is
anchored by Shabbat, and Jewish culture is
brought to life through song, dance, and experiential
education. There are many fine Jewish overnight
and day camps in California that families may want
to consider. A good place to start your exploration
of Jewish summer activities is
http://www.jkidla.org/home.
Application forms are available on the Temple
website (www.sephardictemple.org) or by
calling Vicki Karmona at the Temple office
(310-475-7000) or e-mail [email protected]. The deadline for filing an application
and all supporting materials for the next academic year is June 30. These materials include a
letter of acceptance or evidence of enrollment
in an institution of higher education, a personal
statement, and a certified copy of the student’s
most recent transcript of grades. Scholarship
awards are announced at the beginning of August.
Merit Award application forms are available on
the Temple website (www.sephardictemple.org),
under the heading “Student Awards.” The
deadline for applying for this summer is April
30. Make sure your family takes advantage of
this Temple benefit!

We had our first annual Hanukkah Boutique this year.
It was a great day of shopping and socializing. We
had an amazing turnout of vendors and shoppers.
The boutique made a lot of money for the Or

and old together. Everyone especially enjoyed the
special finds, the baked goods and the delicious
Pomegranate Soup prepared by Flora Nazarian.
We look forward to the growth of our sisterhood and
our continued support of the temple.
Hanukkah Luncheon was fun and entertaining. The
amazing sisterhood volunteers cooked delicious
foods and we enjoyed humorous entertainment

“Scent of Butterflies”
Written by Marcia Israel Weingarten
What is the thread weaving together the Rue
Tigrane Pacha in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria,
Shah Street in the cosmopolitan city of Teheran, and the
Puerta de la Mar in the Old Town of Rhodes, once a
part of Turkey and now a part of Greece? And what do
‘cahk’, ‘toot’' and ‘ashuplados' have in common?
These are names of culinary treats and a taste of the
neighborhoods we once called home. “Cahk” is an
Egyptian egg and sesame biscuit, “toot” a Persian
marzipan delicacy shaped like white mulberries, and
“ashuplados” are meringue clouds from the Island of
Rhodes. These recipes and recollections, along with
several hundred other multi-cultural delicacies, will
make up the new edition of Cooking the Sephardic
Way, the original lovingly produced by the Sisterhood
of Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel, in1971. This cookbook has sold several thousand copies throughout the
world during the past 40 years.
Since that time, Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel has
grown, evolved and become home to a growing number of Jews from throughout the Ottoman lands and the
Middle East, as well as new generations of young families drawn to the warmth and vibrancy of the community. Each group has brought with them a cultural and
culinary tradition that together create a beautiful ‘salad
bowl’ of diversity that makes Sephardic Temple Tifereth
Israel such a rich and enriching place to call home.
The ‘Cookbook Group’ has been meeting for the past
two years, sharing recipes and traditions from Turkey,
Morocco, Rhodes, Iran, Israel, Egypt and South America.
Our diversity makes us unique – bringing new flavors
and traditions to the table; always marveling at the similarities we share. We continue to collect recipes and are
beginning the process of testing. We are actively seeking and requesting your recipes and holiday/life cycle
menus from your respective ‘home’ traditions.
The new cookbook, which we anticipate will include
photographs and stories of our rich cultures, should be
a volume that all collectors will want for their library…
and ‘foodies’ and cooks of all backgrounds will want in
their kitchen.
We look forward to sharing the history of this project
and the vision for this new edition in future issues of the
El Shofar. For now, we ask that you submit your recipes
for consideration to our editorial committee at
[email protected].
Looking forward, with your input, to a stellar cookbook
and the sharing of our rich and beautiful traditions.

Our two wonderful
and creative friends,
Reggie Arditti and

honored at a special
Sisterhood luncheon
Sylvia Kapon with
on November 20,
Rabbi Sessler and Rabbi David
2013. My memories
trace back many years with both Reggie
and Sylvia.
Sylvia Kapon, now 95, lives near our synagogue in
the same home she and her husband, Mario, shared.
After Mario passed away in 1982, Sylvia continued
to live a strong and active life. For years she prepared all the sweet tables for the weekly Oneg
Shabbat, ordering the pastries and decorating the
platters. Sylvia also worked in the Matilda Seror Gift
Shop every day. Sylvia never hesitated to volunteer
when the Sisterhood needed to prepare a Huevo.
Sylvia also has been a speaker many times in our
Talmud Torah, sharing her stories of growing up in
Salonika, Greece. She also describes to the children
how she and her husband escaped the Nazis by
hiding in Athens in
hovels until the end
of the War. Sadly,
her mother and sister were killed in the
concentration
camps. They had
lost everything when
they returned to Salonika after the war,
including their
daughter, Rachel,
who died in a freak

accident. Sylvia and Rabbi Sessler and Rabbi David
Mario had one
daughter, Stella, who was born after the war in Salonika and a son, Isaac, who was born in Los Angeles. Despite the hardships of her early life, Sylvia
showed the determination and strength to create a
fulfilling life for herself in our synagogue. Congratulations to Sylvia for being honored by Sisterhood. You
are a most deserving woman of valor.
It is appropriate that Reggie Arditti, now 103, be
honored as our Sisterhood plans to publish a new
Sephardic cookbook. Reggie, as co-editor, and Pearl
Roseman, as editor, initiated our first cookbook that
went to press in 1971. Recipes from women in our
community welcomed volunteers into their homes
to translate non-standard measurements into standard measurements and test recipes so they could
be easily prepared in any home. A half eggshell of
oil became a quarter cup and all the Ladino instructions women had scribbled onto bits of paper
needed translation into English. Creating this cookbook was a work of love and years. The cookbook
was reviewed in the LA Times over a lunch Reggie
prepared. The menu: boyos, burekas, fritadas,
soutlatch and biscochos! The cookbook critic could
not help being blown away by the Sephardic delicacies and Reggie remembers being blown away by
the number of cookbooks sold worldwide.
Recently, Reggie came into the temple with her
daughter, Louise, to pick up two cookbooks for new
customers! A woman who lost her cookbook in
Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey purchased one.
Cooking the Sephardic Way continues to be used in
many homes. Reggie not only was an extraordinary

LOS MERECIDOS RECIPIENTS
What is Los Merecidos?
Los Merecidos is a Ladino phrase which literally
means “The Deserved Ones.” Since our community
was originally started by Ladino speaking Sephardic
Jews from Greece and Turkey the name stuck. In
1981 the first “Los Merecidos” was awarded in
recognition of tireless efforts on behalf of our
congregation and our Temple. Since then, there have
been a number of members who have been recognized as leaders of our community for their passion
and commitment to volunteer so that this community
would continue to strive for future generations. Our
2014 Los Merecidos recipients follow in the footsteps of all the past honorees and we thank them all
for their hard work and commitment.

MENS CL UB MESSAG E
Shalom,
It has been my honor to serve as the president of the Men’s club of Sephardic Temple for this past year. During
the past year, the Men’s club has been reenergized and has accomplished quite a bit. We have our monthly
game nights the second Tuesday of every month, book and lecture series, guest speakers, Jewish Chamber of
Commerce business networking events, and of course our annual dinner. We have a lot more planned for the
coming year and encourage you to join us in helping build a strong Men’s club and Temple Community. Please
continue to show your support by becoming engaged in Temple and Men’s club events.
On behalf of the Men’s Club, I want to wish all of you a happy and healthy Pesach.
