NHC EPS BUILDING SYSTEM

2016 - NHC
NHC EPS Building System
Rising cost of construction , expensive cost of finance has made housing
unaffordable to the majority of low and middle-income earners.
NHC EPS Factory was Commissioned at Mlolongo area of Machakos County, a short
distance from Nairobi, in May 2013 by National Housing Corporation which is wholly
owned by the Government of Kenya.
The establishment of an EPS production factory is part of the NHC vision to decently
house the Nation. The factory is mandated to produce quality construction materials
and will go a long way in providing adequate and affordable housing.
The use of EPS panels as a substitute to traditional materials used in erecting walls,
stairwells, floors and roofs is expected to reduce construction periods as well as
direct and indirect building costs. Besides the return on capital invested, building a
house using the EPS panels will significantly take less time than when constructing
using conventional materials such as stones.

NHC EPS BUILDING SYSTEM IS CHANGING THE
CONSTRUCTION METHODS WORLDWIDE
STRONGER THAN BLOCK.MORE VERSATILE
THAN STONE WALLING & FASTER THAN EITHER.
In a world grown accustomed to evolutionary change one remarkable
building, system is making a truly revolutionary impact on global
construction methods – the EPS panel system.
The components of the EPS panel system are simple – a more modified
expanded polystyrene flanked by wire mesh connected with galvanized
truss wires, field–coated with concrete.
Yet its extraordinary designs, flexibility, ease of installation, veracity of
application, and astonishing strength are changing the way construction
industry sees the future.

GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS
EPS PANELS
Modified expanded polystyrene Core of 80mm - 200mm.
Two outer layer of 50 mm x 50 mm wire mesh.
Galvanized Truss Wire pierced core and are welded to the outer Mesh Layers
Field applied Shortcrete EPS Panels are produced to exacting tolerance using potential
high speed machinery. The panel’s lightweight yields dramatic advantages in lower
transportation costs, easy job–site handling, rapid erection and installation.
The EPS System allows the architect/engineer to design for various wind loads and
seismic conditions. By varying the size of the wire reinforcement, thickness of shotcrete
and incorporating formed-in-place beams and columns, most structural requirements can
be met.
The EPS panel system can be used in many buildings applicants; i.e. residential,
commercial industrial and institutional; and is designed to meet standards building code
requirements.
The 3D panel system can be used in single story facilities, curtains, and privacy walls,
sound barriers, load-bearing, non-load bearing retaining walls and roofs.

STRUCTURAL PLASTER
THE CONCREWALL SINGLE PANEL USED AS BEARING ELEMENT IS FINISHED ON SITE THOUGHT
STRUCTURAL PLASTER APPLICATION ON EACH SIDE. THE STANDARD FINAL THICKNESS OF
ABOUT 3 CM. THE PANEL WILL FORM A PLATE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE WITH EXPANDED
POLYSTYRENE CORE. THE STRUCTURAL PLASTER WILL HAVE MIXED CHOOSING SAND WITH
GRANULOMETRY FROM 0 TO 5MM AND FINAL RESISTANCE OF AT LEAST 200 ÷ 250 DAN/CM2,
VARIABLE ACCORDING TO THE STRUCTURAL PANELS AND GEOMETRY BUILDING CONDITIONS.
THE PLASTER SHOULD HAVE A PLASTIC CONSISTENCY S2 (MEASURED SETTLEMENT WITH
ABRAMS CONE LESS THAN 5CM).
FOR STANDARD DOSAGE IN ONE CUBIC METER OF MASS, THE INDICATIVE QUANTITY OF EACH
MATERIAL SHOULD BE:
CONCRETE
350 KG
SAND WITH MIXED GRANULOMETRY
1600 KG
WATER
160 KG (LITERS)
THE QUANTITY OF WATER MAY BE DIFFERENT ACCORDING TO THE NATURAL SAND HUMIDITY.
THE FOLLOWING PARAMETER THAT SHOULD BE CONSTANT:
A/C ~ 0,52
I/C ~ 4,5
THE SAND QUALITY SHOULD BE WITHOUT CLAY OR ANY ORGANIC SUBSTANCES AND TOTALLY
WASHED.
ANY PROBLEMS OF WORKABILITY MUST BE SOLVED WITHOUT ADDING WATER, AND USING
FLUIDIFYING ADDITIVES DOSED ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS.

THE RETRACTION CRACKS FORMATION CAN BE AVOIDED BY ADDING POLYPROPYLENE FIBERS

MISSILE TEST
Wind Science & Engineering Research Center_Texas Tech University
•130 mm and 150 mm panels - are resistant to the Florida Building Code & Dade County
Hurricane Envelope resistance = 55 km/h missile & 225 km/h hurricane (34 mph & 140 mph
hurricane).
•130 mm panel - threshold of perforation = 129 km/h missile & 322 km/h hurricane (80 mph &
200 mph hurricane) impact resistance, however since panel cracking becomes an issue with each
impact, the panel resistance therefore considered as 122 km/h missile & 306 km/h hurricane (76
mph impact/190 mph). These are ICC-500 Storm Shelter standards.
•150 mm panel - threshold of perforation = 142 km/h missile & 354 km/h hurricane (88+ mph &
220 mph hurricane) impact resistance. Since two of the panels were tested to the highest standard
for hurricanes 177 km/hr & 354 km/h hurricane ( 110 mph & 220 hurricane - FEMA 361
Standard) and were reasonably resistant, the 150 mm panel can be rated to146 km/h & 362 km/h
hurricane (90 mph & 225 mph hurricane) impact resistance, which is the highest rating per the
ICC-500 standard.
