High Morning Numbers?
Very high blood glucose in the early morning is caused
by the release of certain hormones in the middle of the
night. The body makes several hormones which work
against the action of insulin.
These hormones raise your blood glucose levels, when
needed, by signaling the liver to release more glucose
and by slowing the use of glucose in body.
We want to work to bring your early morning blood
glucose down! Many patients CAN bring morning
glucose down by simply having a bedtime snack daily!
Within one hour of going to bed, have a snack. The
best snacks will combine a serving of carbohydrate
and a little protein.
Several good snack combinations are:
6 crackers and 1 oz. cheese
3/4 cup cereal and 1/2 cup milk
1/2 sandwich and 1 cup milk
Sliced apple and 1 oz. cheese
6 crackers and 1 tbsp. peanut butter
1 cup milk and cornbread
1/2 sandwich and piece of fruit
3 graham crackers and 1 cup milk
Having that bedtime snack helps to head off those signals for the liver to begin to make glucose
in the middle of the night. This results in a lower morning glucose level.
This also helps keep your levels better during the day!
Try a bedtime snack...you will probably like the results.
