Residents - Did You Know?
We all know that in an
emergency, it is difficult to make
contact with your loved ones.
To give them peace of mind,
below are some suggestions:
Put ICE on your cell phones! ICE stands for In Case
of Emergency. When an emergency happens to you,
officials know to look for ICE on your cell phone
directory. All you have to do is choose a relative or
friend, program ICE and their phone number. That
phone number will be contacted to let your loved
ones know something has happened to you.
It is also helpful to choose a relative or friend who
lives outside the State of Florida as your contact
point. When all cell phone towers are down in an
emergency situation, let your contact know if you
are safe and where you are. Let the rest of your
relatives and friends know to contact that person.
You may be able to make one call, so use it wisely
If you have a Driver’s License or Florida ID card,
go on the Internet at https://services.flhsmv.gov/
eci and enter one or two emergency contacts
to be added to computer driver’s license file
The American Red Cross has a web site that will
provide peace of mind to your loved ones during
disasters. If you have been affected by a disaster,
you can register yourself on the American Red
Cross Safe and Well website, where your loved
ones can search for you. Your privacy is preserved.
People will need to know your name and address
or phone number in order to see your post. To
register visit www.redcross.org/safeandwell and
click “Search Registrants”, then complete the form.
Your registration will be good for 90 days. Choose
an out-of-state relative or friend as an emergency
contact. Make sure your loved ones are familiar
with this website so they can find out about you.

This Team Member of the Month takes her job very
serious and works diligently to insure our residents

Team Member of the Month for September 2013!
Early Settlers In Our Area
If you are not attending Gloria’s activity called “Hot
Topics,” you are missing out on an interesting history
of this area. She is leading us in a book review of
“The Promised Land” written by Carolyn Durak
and illustrated by her husband, Michael Durak. The
senior Duraks were Slovak immigrants who probably
first landed in North Dakota. This book is especially
interesting to me as my in-laws, John and Anna Musich,
were young, married Slovak immigrants who settled
in the border state of Minnesota at the same time.
The theme of the book is based on stories and
recollections of Mr. Durak’s father and other family
members during the period of 1913 to 1920. This
was the time that The Indian River Catholic Colony
in Brevard County was being settled. Here is how
the story goes: a Land Company ran ads in the
Czech and German newspapers all over the upper
Midwest telling about a special Indian River Catholic
Colony established in Brevard County, Florida.
Booklets were available at all rectories telling how
farmers could raise their crops year-round in the mild
Florida climate. Ticket reservations were available
on Tuesdays and Thursdays, during which time you
could come and look at the land for a cost of $38
round trip. Cost of the tickets would be refunded if you
decided not to buy the land. That deal is of particular
interest to me because John and Anna Musich did
in fact purchase land but never settled on it.
The book tells tales of homesteading the Florida
flatlands; and oh, what tales they had to tell! When
we moved up here 40 years ago from West Palm
Beach, the Koutnicks, Huggins, Knechts, and other
children from the book were then in their 50s and
60s. They were the golfers, bridge players, and party
goers of their time. The town of Tillman had been
renamed Palm Bay with a population of 10,000.
Mark your calendars for the 1st and 3rd Thursdays
of the month and plan to attend the “Hot Topics”
activity at 6:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor Card Room.

September 2013
News from Charlotte
Dear Folks,
Welcome September! We are
getting ready for some creative
and educational opportunities
throughout this month as
we begin the trek towards
International Active Aging Week,
September 23 – 28. Deanne has
many special activities for each
of you to partake in, many of
which are new to our cadre of
events! Please mark your calendars for September.
Don’t miss out on Active Aging excitement! I want
to send a special THANK YOU to Gloria, our 3rd
Floor Activities Guru! She is offering some very
special programming that many of you may want
to attend! She holds “Night Court” on every other
Thursday evening in the Card Room, where she uses
real cases and brings them to the Glenbrooke Court
House for trial. These cases are thought provoking;
where conservatives and liberals come together and
where new thinking is uncovered A very good time
for all Glenbrooke residents! I ask that each of you
continue to peruse your Hurricane Preparedness
information, ensuring that in case of a Hurricane,
you have what you and your pets may need to last
for a 3 to 4 day period of time! Make your plan. If
you are leaving the community, please be prepared
to let the front desk know your destination and
a contact number where you can be reached!
Planning is the process to success! Looking forward
to seeing everyone around the campus and taking
part in Active Aging at Glenbrooke!
Hugs and Kisses,
Charlotte
Resident of the Month
This Resident spends as much time as she can in activities and events
but often is visiting with her husband in long term care! Here at
Glenbrooke, she plays bridge, is one of the Resident Council Board
of Directors in the Vice President position, and often is seen making
new residents feel at home when they arrive! Please give kudos to
Mary Gilbert, our Resident of the Month for September 2013!
