He cited significant changes in work and travel requirements as the primary reason for his resignation. As First Vice President, I have agreed to serve as Acting President until a replacement can be found. During this interim period, my intention is for the Board to continue to work on the key activities that have been prioritized by the various CCA committees. Unfortunately, my work schedules and commitments do not allow me to assume this position on a full-time basis. Anyone interested in serving as President is urged to contact Camille Harris, Chair of the Nominating Committee. More information on submitting nominations is included below and throughout this edition of the newsletter. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and looks forward to the New Year. Sincerely, Jim Beck CCA Leadership Position Openings and Nominations The CCA has several current leadership position openings: Two (2) Board Director positions - These terms expire May, 2015. The openings are due to two resignations during the current Board year. The Board would like to fill these positions with people who are willing to serve either as President or as a Standing Committee Chair. President - The current opening is for a Board-appointed President term that expires May, 2013. Ideally, the person who fills this position is also interested in being appointed by the Board to serve as President for another 1-year term beginning May, 2013. As a prerequisite, the President must first be appointed by the Board to fill one of the two Director terms that expire in May, 2015. Community Development Chair – The current opening is for a position that expires May, 2013. Ideally, the person who fills this position is also interested in continuing to serve in 2013-14. The Community Development Chair does not have to serve on the Board as a Director, but may express interest in being appointed to the Board for one of the two vacant Director positions. The Nominating Committee will be convening in early 2013 to begin work on a slate to recommend to the Board for four (4) Director 3-year terms that will start in May, 2013. The Board will adopt a slate prior to the CCA Annual Membership Meeting for a vote by CCA Members at the April meeting. Please contact Camille Harris, Nominating Committee Chair, at [email protected] or 355-5564 for additional information about position openings and if you would like to serve or want to make recommendations about others who may be willing to serve. You may also contact one of the other members of the Nominating Committee: Jim Beck, Faye Cates, Melissa Dilworth, Mary Lou Sheridan, and Mary Slaughter. Thank you 2012 Committee Chairs, Coordinators, Block Captains and Volunteers for all you do for our wonderful neighborhood. Without your service, we would not have the thriving, beautiful and safe community that we all call home. We look forward to the work ahead in 2013 and hope many more residents will become part of the CCA! 3 New Faces in the CCA New Additions to the CCA Programs & Events Committee The CCA welcomes our new Programs & Events Committee Co-Chairs, Melissa Dilworth and Jean Rabb. Melissa and Jean have already organized one neighborhood event – a Holiday Home Decorating Contest – and they are working on several other program/event ideas for 2013. Melissa and her husband, Reginald, have raised four boys, ages 16 - 23. Melissa’s parents, Willard and Georgia Houston, purchased their home at 3217 French Street in 1968 when Melissa was three years old. Like a few other Carillon residents, Melissa has never lived anywhere else. Nor did she have to go far to meet her future husband - he lived in the next block! Melissa and Reginald resided for several years in a house on Grant Street and then moved to 3104 French Street. Melissa is a clinic attendant in the nurse’s office at Longdale Elementary School. She is also a member of the CCA Nominating Committee and Block Captain for the 3100 block of French Street. Jean is a “newbie” Carillon resident. She purchased her home at 3111 Rendale Avenue in December 2011. Jean was born in Richmond and grew up in the West End. After graduating from JMU, she moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She returned to Virginia to pursue a career in nursing and currently works as a nurse in the Acute Care Medicine Unit at MCV. When she was house hunting last year, she fell in love with the Carillon neighborhood and her house. She enjoys meeting neighborhood residents while walking her dog, Roscoe. Melissa and Jean are both excited about bringing residents together through fun new neighborhood gatherings. They want to plan programs and events that will appeal to all age groups and families in the neighborhood. If you are interested in serving on the Programs & Events Committee, please contact Melissa at 358-9279 or [email protected]; or contact Jean at 690-0838 or [email protected]. - Contributed by Camille Harris Welcome Mary Lou Sheridan, Chair of CCA’s Fundraising Committee We are pleased to announce that Mary Lou Sheridan is the new Chair of the CCA Fundraising Committee. Mary Lou and her husband, Wilson, have resided in the Kanawha Trace area of the Carillon for about 20 years. Mary Lou currently works in a bookstore three days a week. She is adept at organizing, having been the manager of two auto parts stores for 16 years. Growing up in a family in which her mother and father ran a paint contracting business, Mary Lou developed a “can do” attitude early in life. At age 6, she was painting inside cabinets and helping her parents when she was not in school. She brings the same energy and enthusiasm to her new role as Chair of the CCA Fundraising Committee. As a member of the CCA Nominating Committee, Mary Lou is already helping the CCA identify residents who will step up in leadership positions. Mary Lou looks forward to meeting even more Carillon residents in her new role as Fundraising Committee Chair. Mary Lou and her committee will provide active support to the Arts in the Park Coordinator and to the annual Arts in the Park fundraising event, with a special focus on helping to recruit volunteers for this CCA annual fundraiser and community event. The Fundraising Committee will also oversee any other fundraising activities that are sponsored by the CCA. This committee is a new standing committee of the CCA that was officially created when the Bylaws were revised in February 2012. If you are interested in serving on the Fundraising Committee, please contact Mary Lou at 353-4712 or [email protected]. - Contributed by Camille Harris 4 2012 Holiday Season Recap Holiday Home Decoration Contest Winners This past holiday season, the CCA sponsored a Holiday Home Decorating Contest. Holiday decorations were judged in the following categories. The winners are: Most Festive: 3108 French Street Brightest: 904 S Belmont Ave Most Original: 3209 Bute Lane Honorable Mentions: 3207 Bute Lane and 3209 Garrett Street Each winner will receive a $25 Lowe's gift card. Record-breaking Attendance: Richmond’s 2012 Annual Nativity Pageant On December 23, over 500 Richmond residents and Carillon neighbors braved the cold to attend Richmond’s 81st Annual Nativity Pageant. This interdenominational, inter-racial, Christmas live event featured traditional holiday music, an amazing reenactment of the first Christmas and a wonderful bell concert prior to the show. We would like to acknowledge Paige Quilter and all of the amazing volunteers, musicians and children who helped make this event possible. To view more pictures and event details, please visit the event’s website, http://www.richmondnativitypageant.com/. Community News Town Hall Meeting Update The first quarterly town hall meeting was held on December 11th and attended by approximately thirty residents. Jim Beck, CCA Vice President, moderated the discussion which included reports from chairs of the Beautification, Communications, Arts in the Park, National Nite Out, Membership and Nominating committees, as well as an opportunity for residents to ask questions of the board. Jim offered opening remarks which included the news that Jeff Fisher had recently announced his resignation as President of the CCA Board of Directors. Citing increased responsibilities at work as the reason for his decision, Jeff's resignation was effective immediately. Jim has agreed to serve as Acting President until a replacement can be found. Anyone interested in serving as President should contact Camille Harris, Chair of the Nominating Committee. December Yard of the Month: The Smith Family of 3009 French Street The CCA launched a new community initiative in the fall honoring CCA residents who do a great job of keeping your lawns and houses in excellent shape. This hard work not only keeps the neighborhood looking beautiful, but it also shows visitors and fellow Richmond citizens that we care about our beloved homes and community. CCA residents are encouraged to nominate fellow residents for this great honor. We are pleased to announce that the Smith Family of 3009 French Street has been named the first Yard of the Month. Congratulations!! If you wish to nominate your neighbor(s) for “Yard of the Month,” please send your submission to [email protected]. Each time a yard is selected, the household will be acknowledged with a yard sign and a mention in the upcoming newsletter. 5 Neighborhood Announcements In Loving Memory of David Allen Pate, Jr. Former resident of Garrett Street, David Allen Pate, Jr. died on September 22, 2012. He knew no strangers, loved people and would always have a scripture or a joke to share. Mr. Pate worked for General Motors for 35 years and was ordained to preach the gospel in 1990. He is survived by his wife Linda Pate, four daughters and 13 grandchildren. 5th District Residents Form Community Action Team Community Action Team, 5CAT has been established as a venue to build unity among the district’s neighborhoods and give voice to 5th District citizens’ concerns. 5CAT had its first meeting in November, with plans to meet monthly. The next 5CAT meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 11, 7:00pm at Woodland Heights Baptist Church, 611 West 32nd Street. All 5th District residents are invited to attend. — Contributed by Beth O’Leary Community History A Marker and a Mystery Near the south end of Sunset Lane stands this small enigmatic obelisk marked: “C. L. 1908.” A survey of period Richmond papers suggests that could indicate the city limits in 1908. But why here and why then? It wasn’t until 1914 that the present-day Carillon neighborhood was annexed by the City from Henrico County. The earlier 1906 annexation ended at the western edge of Byrd Park. Tyler Potterfield, author of Nonesuch Place: A History of the Richmond Landscape, proposes that the marker did originally mark the city boundary in 1908 and may have been repurposed and relocated to do the same after 1914, despite the date. In 1908, the street was sometimes called the Beltline Road in reference to the nearby “Beltline Railroad.” After 1914 it was referred to as Spruce Street; after 1924 as Nelson Street; and finally beginning in 1928, it became Sunset Lane. -- Contributed by Beth O’Leary, CCA historian Historic Arches The CCA archives has just acquired an original 1932 aerial photo of the Carillon dedication. A close-up detail confirms that the brick piers, eagle-topped arches, half- circle benches, and community marker at the corner of Sunset Ave. and Rugby Rd. were already in place. They were likely erected in the late 1920s when that section of the neighborhood—then called William Byrd Parkway— was developed. -- Contributed by Beth O’Leary, CCA historian Share your Carillon Neighborhood MEMORIES and MEMENTOS Are you a long-time resident of our community? We are still gathering recollections of the Carillon neighborhood 30, 40, or 50 (more?) years ago. We also welcome names of neighbors or former neighbors that you believe would make good interview subjects. Do you have vintage photos, brochures, postcards, or clippings related to our neighborhood? Old minutes or project notes for the CCA? We’d like to have them for the archives or borrow them to (carefully!) make copies.
