South Gonder
Mother and Child Project
May 2104
Will you enable us to
enable them?
Young mothers in the poorest regions of the world are often
remarkably resourceful and determined, somehow bringing up
their children on an annual income that is tiny even by local
standards. But the problems and challenges they face prevent
them from breaking out of the cycle of poverty; and their
children, if they survive, are often destined to repeat the pattern.
The vision of the South Gonder Mother and
Child Project, in a remote and poverty
stricken area of Ethiopia, is to come
alongside these remarkable young women
and enable them to support their families
and send their children to school.
Our objective is to bring the love of Jesus to these families in
word and action, to help young women bring in an income, and
to provide some sustainable support while they grow in
self-confidence and self-belief.
We provide:
• Income Generation training and support with small business
microfinance
• Essential health provision for families until income
generation begins
• Early learning, parenting skills and social support
• Pre-School education for 3-6 year olds
• Shared meals at the centre
• Training in healthcare and parenting skills for local
practitioners and officials so that sustainable support can
continue in the community
Endayehu is thirty years
old. She was forced to
leave school at 14, when
her family arranged her
marriage.
Seen here with her two
year old twins, Endayehu
works as a daily labourer,
earning £5 a month.
She has no financial
support from anybody
else and in addition to the
twins, Endayehu has three
older sons aged 7, 11, and
14 years. The family rarely
has enough to eat.
A team of 8 Ethiopian staff (4 professionals and 4 support staff) works in the heart of South
Gonder with the families identified by the community as the very neediest. Public Health
professional Moira McLure from the UK works as a Volunteer Advisor to the team.
Supporting a family for a year costs us £250.
Can you enable our work by sending us a donation?
We are hoping that some UK families will be able to ‘sponsor’ a South Gonder family for a year,
by giving £20 a month. But whatever the amount you are able to give, it will be spent on the
direct costs of support. We will keep you up to date with news of our young families' progress,
and developments as the project grows.
With your help and interest, we are breaking the cycle of poverty and seeing hope and
confidence on the faces of mothers and children for the first time.
How to donate.
The South Gonder Mother and Child project is supported by BEZA Church in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, and Speen Church in Buckinghamshire, UK. It is registered through BEZA Community
Development Association.
