2017 NBO Conference Instructor Workshop Tool Lists

techniques taught, and not necessarily what will be woven in class.
Lanny Bergner – Tools/Supplies needed:
• Aviation Hand Snips (for cutting stainless steel mesh)
• Small Diagonal Wire Cutter
Optional: Gloves (snug form fitting leather gloves are the best), Awl
Instructor will bring some extra hand snip and cutters for use in class.
Danielle Bodine – Tools/Supplies needed:
• Scissors
• Medium size Stapler and Staples
• 10-12 Clothespins
• Small Old Towel
• Spritzer or Spray Bottle
• Wear old clothes or apron
Optional – don’t purchase – I bring extras: Handmade and unique papers, Items you like to collect or
have special meaning to you that can be used to embellish - photocopies, beads, found objects,
natural and manufactured materials, wires, etc., Favorite printing stamps, plastic gloves

Jill Nordfors Clark – Tools/Supplies needed:

Pencils /Pens - one or two pencils and an eraser. Fine permanent black felt tip pen (Sharpie)
Paper - unlined sketchbook for recording ideas and making notes
Needles - two large tapestry (blunt ended) needles, the kind used by knitters for assembling
sweaters, (the ones with the turned up tips can be helpful)
Scissors and Clippers - one pair large non-rusting paper or utility scissors, one pair small sharp
sewing or embroidery scissors, small garden clippers for cutting twigs
Matt Cutting Knife - with SPARE, SHARP replacement blades (IMPORTANT) and X-ACTO
knife with a new sharp blade for fine cutting
Ruler or straight edge for cutting foam board molds. I prefer an 18-inch stainless steel, corkbacked one. (Plastic rulers will be ruined by the knife blade)
Odds and ends - masking tape, a small bottle of Elmer’s glue, 5 to 10 plastic quart sized ziplock freezer bags, waterproof apron or cover-up, small T-pins, or ball top straight dressmaker

Images of your own work - postcards, books, or iPad for sharing with the class
Students may want to bring their own lamps/extension cord – good lighting is essential.
Optional: There will be plenty of materials provided by the instructor, but if you have some favorites,
and there’s room in your luggage, bring them along. Possibilities for embedding in the gut are:
cheesecloth, lace fragments, leaf skeletons, ribbons, colorfast threads (any color), metallic or novelty
threads, fine wire, mesh grids
Barbara De Pirro – Tools/Supplies needed:
• Wire cutters

• Cotton work gloves
The Instructor will bring a range of reclaimed materials to share, but students are encouraged to
bring/forage additional materials to add to the mix.
Kathey Ervin – Tools/Supplies needed:
• Basket Cut Scissors
• Awls (variety of sizes)
• Large-eyed needle
• Needle nose pliers
• Angled flush cutter
• Spoke Weight
The instructor will also have all tools available for sale.

• Comfortable walking shoes and attire
• Refillable water bottle
• Spending money for any gift shops and artists studios that you may wish to make purchases
from
Please alert us to any medical conditions that may affect your mobility, etc. so that we can make sure
that the venues are able to accommodate those needs. We will be spending several hours in transit
each day. Feel free to bring reading materials, iPads, knitting projects, etc. to do while on the
bus. We are looking for DVDs to view during our traveling time. Please email Lindsay if you have a

Pat Hickman – Tools/Supplies needed:
• Old bath or dish towel
• Scissors
• Pen, pencil & notebook
• T-pins
• Sharp needles including a large eyed tapestry needle
• Two curved needles with large eyes (one small and another medium size)
• Small wire cutter
• Pliers
• Garden clippers
• Thimble
• Awl
• Ruler (12” long with even, smooth edges and/or a wooden tongue depressor or popsicle stick)
• Roll of masking tape or other tape
• Small tube of acrylic paint and small container for mixing paint
• ½” Paintbrush
• Stiffening agents (e.g. wax, glue, etc.)
• 2 spools of waxed linen (light/dark) or other strong yarn that is smooth (not textured) and will
hold knots well
• Something that for you that meaningfully reflects a memory and/or time or place.
• Images of your own work
Katherine Lewis – Tools/Supplies needed:
• Fixed or Locking Blade Knife
• Rapping iron
• Large awl
• Basket weight
• Pruners (Felco recommended)
• Side cutters, if available
• Ruler

Peeta Tinay – Tools/Supplies needed:
• 1-2 old towels
• Ice pick/awl
• Osborne scratch Awl #4 -5 1/2" blade length
• Round nose or jewelers pliers
• Sharp basket shears
• Felco Shears/or other shears for cutting #8 round reed
• Mat Knife
• Flat head screw driver or favorite packing tool
• Measuring Tape / 12" Ruler / or cloth measuring tape
• Spray bottle
• Black and brown Sharpie permanent markers
• Rubber bands (I like a size #32 or bring what you have on hand)
• Any tools for basketry that you may think helpful and already own.
Optional: Protective Finger Tape, 2" Spring Clamps, Portable Bright Craft Lamp, and Willow Rapping
Iron. An optional printed, 14-page full color instruction handout for $20, will be available for purchase
during class.
