Winter Walking Tips
You get a flat tire. There's a tight deadline at
work and you feel like you have no time to get it
done. You get into an argument with a spouse
or a friend. Surprise! Your car needs new
brakes! Chances are you've experienced one or
more of these circumstances before. Managing
all of life's little surprises is important, but taking
care of and managing the stress that comes
along with them is even more important!
Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or
response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental and emotional
responses. When stress builds up without relief, research suggests it can bring
on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases. According to WebMD, 43% of all
adults suffer adverse health effects from stress and 75%-90% of all doctor's visits
are for stress-related ailment and complaints.

February is Children's Dental Health Month
As adults, we understand the importance of dental health
and good oral hygiene. But despite the fact that it's almost
entirely preventable, the most common chronic disease in
children is tooth decay! More than 40% of children between
the ages of 2 and 11 have had a cavity in their primary
(baby) teeth and more than two-thirds of 16- to 19-year-olds
have had a cavity in their permanent teeth.
Luckily, there are safe and effective preventive measures to
help protect teeth. Tooth decay in children is preventable
with good, age-appropriate dental health habits.
Walking is a great way to keep
yourself active and healthy but

what happens when winter rolls
around? You keep walking of
course! Just because the weather
is cold doesn't mean you can't still
get out there and walk, just follow
these tips:
Ease into your walk - Start
slow to give your muscles
a chance to warm up
before you pick up the
pace.
Walk at a moderate or slow
pace - paths and roads
may have icy patches in
the winter so take it slower
and take smaller strides to
reduce your risk of falling.
Stay hydrated - Just
because it is winter time
does not mean you aren't
sweating so be sure to
take your bottle of water
along even when it's cold
out.
Stay off busy roads if
conditions are bad - Do not
walk where there is traffic if
road conditions are bad
and visibility is low. Try to
stick to paths, parks or
even high schools tracks
and always wear reflective
gear.
Try to wear three layers You can always remove
layers if you get warm but
you can't put on what you
don't have if you are cold!
Avoid cotton clothes - Try
to wear clothes that pull
moisture away from your
skin to help you stay warm.
Wear a hat and gloves
Protect your eyes - Wear
sunglasses if necessary to
protect your eyes if there is
snow glare.
Don't layer your socks You can get blisters from
wearing more than one
pair of socks so opt instead
for a thin pair of socks that
are designed to help keep
your feet warm.

Are Artificial Sweeteners Safe?
Many people turn to artificial sweeteners such as
aspartame, sucralose and saccharin as a healthier
alternative to sugar to reduce caloric intake.
However, a new study conducted by researchers at
Washington University School of Medicine reveals
that this might not actually be the case. The study
set out to determine whether or not sucralose has
an effect on insulin and blood sugar levels.
