On September 27th, at 10:45
am, the Terry Fox Run will be
held at Killam Public School.
Parents and community are
invited to join us in the gym to
hear Terry’s story and begin the run. Pledge forms have
been sent out to students in grades 4 to 9. Students in
kindergarten to grade 3 are asked to bring in a toonie on
the day of the run. All funds donated are forwarded to the
Terry Fox Foundation. On September 26th and 27th,
students will also have an opportunity to indicate who they
will be running for and write it on a shoe that will be
displayed on a board at the school. We hope to see
everyone come out and participate in this worthwhile run.
KPS OPEN HOUSE
Following the Terry Fox Run and/or over lunch hour we are
inviting families to join their children for a snack and a
reading activity in classrooms. This is an opportunity to
meet teachers and see our classrooms while sharing in a
literacy activity. You are welcome to bring along your lunch.
SPIRIT DAY
Our first spirit day will be Thursday, Sept.
27th. It will be CRAZY HAT Day at KPS.
SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
DATE CHANGE
The first meeting will be Wednesday, September 26th at
6:30pm. Noreen Metz, our School Trustee, will join us.
There will be a report on the joint Flagstaff School
Councils meeting with Dr. Payne which will be held on
Tuesday, Sept. 25th. Principal’s report will include our
school program for this year and the current status of our
school budget. All parents are welcome to join us and bring
any questions you may have about educational issues at KPS.

MAGAZINE SALES BEGIN
On Sept. 26th a representative from CCRP will kick off our
annual magazine sale campaign with our JH students.
Students will be selling magazine subscriptions until after
the Thanksgiving weekend. We appreciate your support of
this major fundraiser as monies raised offset the cost of
many school projects.
MINI SLAMMERS for Gr. 5 and 6
Miss Hines has volunteered to run this program this year.
Practices will be on Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch time
and Wednesdays after school from 3:45-4:45pm (with the
possibility of some Mondays if the JH has a game on Wed.).
Practices will start on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd. Schedules and
consent forms will be sent home at that time.
LONG WEEKEND
Just a reminder that Friday, Oct. 5th is our first Feeder
Day for the 2012-13 school year. Thanksgiving is Oct. 8th,
followed by a PD Day (no school for students) on Oct. 9th.

INSURANCE NOTE FROM BRSD
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Don’t worry – we’ve got your children covered
Student Accident Insurance is included in Battle River
School Division’s insurance package. That means that,
during the school day, all children in ECS to Grade 12 within
BRSD have basic insurance coverage in the event of injury –
for example, if there is an ambulance trip required or there
are expenses associated with treatment.
However, if a child is injured, the family is responsible for
making claims to the insurance company. This cannot be
done by any staff of BRSD or a specific school. For more
detailed information, check this link on the BRSD website http://www.brsd.ab.ca/Parents/Student%20Accident%20I
nsurance/Forms/AllItems.aspx
BRSD’s insurance company also offers parents a lower-cost
opportunity to purchase additional insurance for their
school-aged children, which allows the children to be
covered 24-hours a day. Brochures for that program, called
Kids Plus, have been sent home separately from this
newsletter.
*Killam Ladies Bowling - Wednesdays, starting Oct. 10th.
Call Maybell at 385-3681 or Bessie at 385-2171 if
interested.

Local Student Published - Carter
Ortman, a grade 9 student, had one
of his assignments published this
year. Graham Foster, author of
the teacher resource Ban the Book
Review
included an assignment
written by Carter in LA 8 as an exemplar to help other
students. Well done Carter.
A HUGE thank you to Guardian Drugs for their
generous support in helping to start the Jr. High
Reading program.
TECHNOLOGY TIPS
Our wireless network, Rivernet, is now available for
educational purposes for students in grades 4-9. When
students use this network their internet activity is
trackable through BRSD as they must use their school
password to enter this network. Should you choose to have
your child bring a 3G or higher electronic device to school
they are able to go on to the internet through the 3G
network but their activity is not trackable by the school.
