10.5 The Life Cycle of a Star

10.5
The Life Cycle of a Star
First Step
Nebula
  A large cloud of gas and dust spread over lots of
space
Second Step
Protostar
  The nebula starts to condense and creates enough
mass to be classified as a star
Third Step
A Star
•  A star forms when the protostar becomes so hot
and dense that nuclear fusion begins
Fourth Step / The Life of the Star
•  From this point a stars life is dependant on how
much mass it has
  The more mass the larger and hotter the star
Fifth Step (Death of a Star)
The star eventually starts to cool and expand
forming one of the following
  Low Mass Stars
•  Red Giant  planetary nebula  white dwarf  black
dwarf
  High Mass Stars
•  Red Supergiant  collapse creating a supernova  then
either create a neutron star or a black hole
