toentertheirYoungPoetsCompetitionaspartoftheTauntonLiveArtsFestivalinJuly.
Thecompetition,willbejudgedbymembersoftheFireRiverPoets.
ThethemeisClimate.Thereisnoentryfee.
Entrantsareaskedtowriteapoemwhichexaminesclimateinanywayatall–atriptoa
hotcountryinwhichtheheavensopen,say,orabeautifultropicalislandwherean
argumentruinseverything.Perhapsapoemsetinschoolonaparticularday,oracultural
mistakemadeinaforeigncountry.Yourpoemcouldalsorefertoemotionalclimate.Have
youevercalledafriendonthephoneandjustknownsomethingwaswrong,evenifthey
didnotsayso?Orhaveyoubeenthebearerofbadnews–orgoodnews,likeacatbeing
found?
Anythingiswelcome,andthemoresurprisingandinterestingthebetter!
Poemsneednotrhyme–indeedpoemsmightbemoreeffectivewithoutrhymeunless
writersareveryskilledatthis.Therearethreeagecategorieswiththreeprizesineach.
Eachprize-winnerwillreceiveabooktoken,journalandpenandpublicityfortheirpoem.
Allprize-winningandcommendedpoetswillbeinvitedtoanawardsceremonyonthe
eveningofWednesday12thJulyattheBrewhouse,Taunton,wherethewinningpoemswill
bedisplayedandtheprize-winningpoetscangiveareadingoftheirwork.
TAUNTONLIVE2017COMPETITIONRULES
1. AllentrantsmustresideinSomerset.
2. Therearethreecategories:age7-9,age10-12,age13-16.
3. Entrantsmusthavetheapprovalofaparent,guardianorteacherwhogivestheirdetailsandcanbe
contactedshouldthepoetwinaprize.
4. Poemsmustbetheoriginal,unaidedworkofthepoetentering.
5. Poemsmustbebetween10and35linesexcludingthetitleandlinegaps.
6. Eachpoetmayenteramaximumoftwopoems.
7. Poetsmustkeepasecondcopyofthepoem(s)submittedwhichtheycanbringtotheaward
ceremonyifinvited.
8. PoemsmustbesubmittedonA4paperandmaybehand-writtenorwordprocessed.
9. ThecompetitionwillbejudgedbymembersofFireRiverPoets.Thejudges’decisionswillbefinal
andnocorrespondencewillbeenteredintoaboutthesedecisions.
10. EntriesmustbesubmittedbyFriday16thJune.WinnerswillbecontactedbySaturday1stJuly.
11. Prize-winnersineachagegroupwilleachreceiveabooktoken(Firstprize£15;SecondPrize£10;ThirdPrize
£5),journalandpen.Thethreefirstprizewinnerswillalsoreceiveafreecreativewritingworkshopfortheir
school,ledbyaprofessionalwriter.
