Year 3 Home Learning Grid - Summer Term 2017 GEOGRAPHY Topic – Rainforests… Why are rainforests important? During the Summer Term, we would like Year 3 children to select their Home Learning from the grid below in order to support and develop their learning in class about Rainforests. During each half term we would like to encourage all children to choose and complete two activities. Completed Home Learning can be brought into school at any point in the term, although we would like to suggest that two pieces of home learning are submitted on or before Wednesday 24th May and two further pieces of home learning are submitted on or before Wednesday 5th July 2017. All home learning will be celebrated and displayed either in the classroom or around school, so remember to use your best handwriting and carefully consider how you will present your learning. Write an acrostic poem about a RAINFOREST. Consider presentation, including handwriting and how you will decorate the page for display. Imagine that you are an explorer in the Amazon Rainforest. What will you take with you? What adventures will you endure? What will you see, hear, smell, and eat? Who will you meet? Write diary entries to describe a week of your adventures and explorations. Design a poster, persuading an animal from a different habitat (desert; garden; the sea etc) to come and live in the rainforest. What does the rainforest have to offer? Write a short story, focusing on the day in the life of a rainforest animal. Create a new breed of animal to live in the rainforest, combining 2-3 animals of your choice. Draw, label and name your new animal. Is it an elephird or a crocakeilla, for example? Can you find out about different things that grow in the rainforest? What fruit grows there that we can eat? Are there any unusual plants or flowers. Present this information as a non-chronological report. Create a model of a rainforest, in any form you wish – how creative and inventive can you be? Research a well known rainforest (e.g. Amazon; Congo; Daintree) and create a map of the rainforest, identifying key details and features and including a suitable key. Design a rainforest puppet, based on an animal. Consider the materials and equipment you will need. If you can, make and evaluate the puppet. Create a model of one aspect of a rainforest, e.g. a waterfall; a kapok tree; an area of deforestation; an animal den; a tribe’s village... Design and create a game to be played in a small group about the rainforest. Will it be a trivia game testing your knowledge? Or a quick fire round of 5 second rule? Or your own version of a board game such as snakes and ladders? Make a rainforest survival kit. What will you include to get you through your jungle journey?
