In September, we
watched a series of videos by
Professor Jo Boaler from Stanford University. Her research is
about mathematical mindsets,
or more generally, growth
mindsets. She considers the
damage of saying “I can’t,” of
saying “I’m not a math person,” and generally being
quick to quit when things are a
struggle.
Her research shows
that anyone can improve in
Mathematics if they believe
they can, do purposeful practice, and develop a willingness
to continue to try when faced
with difficulty. The brain literally gets smarter.
My experience has
always led me to believe that
quitting quickly, negative selftalk, and learned helplessness
are huge barriers to learning
success.
This past month, we
have been learning mental
math strategies to increase
general number sense and to
build opportunities for success
and confidence in Mathematics. We have also been working with place value and forms
of numbers.
In Language, we have
been working on daily quick
writes that focus on generating
ideas and justifying one’s thinking. We interviewed and introduced classmates, and we read
a novel about friendship and
deathly jellyfish.
As part of the Grade 6
Social Studies, our class participated in Oktoberfest, celebrating German language, dance,
music, food, and culture. The
trip also explored the early settlement of Kitchener (Berlin) by
Germans. We look forward to
visiting Crawford Lake near
Milton in November (cost will be
$20) to explore the lifestyle of
First Nations people in our
province. This trip supports
both the Grade 5 and 6 Social
Studies Curriculum.
Our Grade 6 students enjoyed a pond study
at Camp Heidelberg as part
of their biodiversity unit in
Science, while the Grade 5s
will have an outdoor education opportunity in the winter
as part of their science program.
In Physical Education, we have been focusing
on agility, balance, coordination, and strength in our
warm-ups, and on ultimate
games (chicken, Frisbee,
football) that focus on throwing, catching, and dodging
skills.
Beyond the curriculum, we have been developing our use of Google Drive,
our ideas around gratitude,
our use of notebooks, duotangs, and binders, and the
use of our planner. Thank
you for checking your child’s
planner. We update the week
every Monday, and I check
for your initials at the end of
each week.
Happy October to you.
