Ponyboy's parents passed away. The three brothers live
together. Darry is the oldest and works to take care of
Sodapop and Pony. Soda dropped out of school to work and

Chapter 2
"We all had money to get in-it only costs a quarter if
you're not in a car-but Dally hated to do things the legal
way. He liked to show that he didn't care whether there
was a law or not. He went around trying to break
laws,"(20).
Dally is rebellious and tough. He
doesn't care about getting in
trouble. He does things his way.

Chapter 2
Cherry is trying to make Pony understand that the socials don't
have it as easy as he thinks. They have problems of their own. He
doesn't understand what kinds of problems they can possibly havethey have EVERYTHING.
"I really couldn't see what Socs would
have to sweat about-good grades, good girls,
madras, and Mustangs and Corvairs-Man,
I thought, if I had worries like that I'd
consider myself lucky,"(36).

"I really couldn't see what Socs would have to sweat aboutgood grades, good girls, madras, and Mustangs and CorvairsMan, I thought, if I had worries like that I'd consider
myself lucky. I
know better now,"(36).
This is an example of foreshadowing. Pony is foreshadowing
that he will come to understand that the socials DO have
problems.

5. How did Johnny behave in an uncharacteristic way in chapter 2
at the drive-in? Explain.
Johnny is usually quiet and nervous. He actually told Dally to leave
Cherry alone. No one stands up to Dally and the fact that it was
Johnny makes it all the more surprising. Pages 24-25
Dally is Johnny's hero.

Chapter One:
Explain tough vs. tuff according to the greaser gang.
"Tough is the same as rough. Tuff means cool, sharp- like a
tuff looking mustang or a tuff record" (12).
Both are compliments.
Gee! Ain't that
a TUFF looking
car, Peggy!?

Ponyboy makes a connection to the novel he is reading,
Great Expectations. What was the connection to the
character? How does this reflect his emotional side?
"...that kid Pip, he reminded me of us- the way he felt
marked lousy because he wasn't a gentleman or anything,
and the way that girl kept looking down on him."
Ponyboy feels as though this hand has been dealt to him
and there is no way out of it. They are the way that they
are and that is that. He feels as though people judge
before they know them.

Reflection:
Do you agree or disagree with Cherry when she says,
"things are rough all over"? Is it fair to assume you have
things worse? Explain your response based on the
greasers and the socials.
