Thinking skill I chose: inferring Throughout the story we can learn that the narrator is an extremely prejudiced man who believes that British people are superior to other. He is also a chauvinist as we can see by the way he describes Mrs. Ramsay. b. I chose this thinking skill because I inferred the narrator's characteristics by his thoughts, actions and behavior. 6) The narrator says this at the end of the story because he discovered that Mr. Kelada is a good man. Kelada gave up his reputation to help Mrs. Ramsay hide her secret. This action caused the narrator to respect Mr. Kelada. 2 B. A Summer's Reading\ Bernard Malamud 7) 3. Never graduated from high school. 8) 1. He wants a good job. 2. He wants a wife so he won't feel lonely. 9) Sophie gives George a weekly allowance of one dollar and respects him more. 10) Mr. Cattanzara wants to show George that he cares about him and is interested in him. 11) a. Thinking skill I chose: Inferring We can learn that Mr. Cattanzara is unhappy from his behavior. He often sits alone in front of his house while his wife is inside which show that they don’t communicate. He also gets drinks a lot. b. I chose this thinking skill because I inferred about Mr. Cattanzara's happiness from his behavior and actions. 12) George felt like he was crumbling on the inside because he knew that Mr. Cattanzara knew he was lying and was ashamed of himself. He respected Mr. Cattanzara and didn’t want to disappoint him. 3 Part II C. The Split Cherry Tree\ Jesse Stuart 13) Dave had to stay after school because he and his friends broke a cherry tree and he didn’t have money to pay for it. 14) 3. He had to help his father with farm work. 15) Dave's father was angry with Dave's teacher for keeping him after school and wanted to threaten him. 16) a. Thinking skill I chose: Distinguishing different perspectives. Pa understands the importance of education and how education is going to help his son Dave have a better life. b. I chose this thinking skill because I distinguished between Pa's opinion of school before and after his visit and conversation with Dave's teacher. 17) Pa helped Dave sweep the floors because he understood why Dave's teacher gave him this punishment. 4 D. The Treasure of Lemon Brown\ Walter Dean Myers 18) Because he knew that if he failed his father wouldn’t let him play basketball. 19) 1. He needed to get out of the rain. 20) 1. He made a strange noise to chase away the thugs. 21) a. Thinking skill I chose: compare and contrast. Lemon Brown's treasure is not something worth a lot of money. His treasure has emotional value because it belonged to his son who took it to the war so it will remind him of his father. This showed Lemon Brown that his son was proud of him. b. I chose this thinking skill because I compared between the usual meaning of treasure- something worth a lot of money to Lemon Brown's definition of treasure. 22) a. Greg has learned to respect his father and to value his father's concern for him b. Greg will tell his father that he understands that he is worried about his grades because he wants Greg to succeed and that he will listen to him more. 5 Part III- Bridging Text and Context 23) Thank You, Ma'am\ Langston Hughes This quote helps me understand the story because I understand why Mrs. Jones helped Roger even though he tried to steal from her. Mrs. Jones showed how much she cared for Roger: she took him home with her, gave him something to eat, talked to him and explained to him why stealing her purse was wrong. She did all these things instead of calling the police. We don't know if she really helped him, because the story is open. But Roger says "Thank you, Ma'am," at the end, so we know that she had a good effect on him and maybe helped him to straighten out his soul. 24) The Road Not Taken\ Robert Frost At the beginning of the poem Frost writes that he is sorry he isn't able to go on both roads. He also writes how he stood for a long time looking at the roads before he made a decision. This fits in with the quote which says that Frost's friend wasn't ever happy with his decisions because he always wanted the road he didn't take. This is exactly what Frost says 6 when he writes that he hoped to come back one day and take the other road but knew in his heart it would not happen. The last stanza tells us he is sorry he can’t know what is on the other road when he says that he will talk about his choice with a "sigh." (The title also relates directly to the quote because it says "The Road NOT Taken" which shows us Frost (or his friend) is sorry he couldn't take the other road as well. Instead of feeling satisfied with his life, he feels unhappy, like he's missed something.) 7
