Dreams are defined as ambitions or aspirations. They are part of everyone's life. Some people have vivid and
absolute pictures of what they want their lives to be. Others tend to see little of their future and just let life happen to
them. Still others believe, sadly, that their dreams are impossible and meaningless.
When you know what your dream is, you can begin to form a picture. By seeing this picture often, with as
much detail as possible, and by adding the emotions you believe you would feel working for and reliving your dream,
you can make it happen.
Of course, there is another necessary element, that of action. If you truly want this dream to appear for you,
you will follow through with the appropriate action. That action proves to the universe that this is what you desire. If
your actions are only half-hearted, your dream was only half-hearted. Think on these things and realize that your
positive thoughts are what bring wonderful things, material and otherwise, to your life. The life you probably want to
create, one of beauty and fulfilment, depends on what your dreams hold.
This is all not to say that you should live in the future. It is rather, a suggestion that your dreams mean
something. They are your mind's way of telling you there is something good for you out there. To ignore them is to ignore

These lines are taken from 'Respond instead of Reacting'. It is a speech of Azim Premji. He is one of the
successful business tycoons of India. He is the Chairman of Wipro. In his speech, he shared the lessons he had
learnt in his life with the Indian young men and women. He also presented a list of qualities that they should
follow to achieve success.
Man is an admixture of weaknesses and strengths. If we always think of the demerits, we will become
pessimists. But, when we look at our strengths, we will become optimists. That's why Azim Premji says that we
must always begin with our own strengths. It is the best way to achieve what we want in our lives.
If we start using our strengths, it will increase our self- confidence. It also gives energy to correct or reduce
the weaknesses. The parents asked the rabbit to forget hopping and concentrate on swimming. Finally the rabbit
forgot hopping too. This tells us clearly of the positive and negative approaches in life.

These lines are taken from the narrative essay 'Albert Einstein at School' written by Patrick Pringle. The essay
describes how Einstein was a misfit at school and how he made a desperate attempt to escape.
Einstein hated the school at Munich and longed to escape. But he knew that if he left his studies and went
to Italy to join his family, his father would get angry and send him back.
One day he gets an idea. He decides to play a small drama. He would pretend that he has had a nervous break
down. He would say that he has been advised by the doctor to discontinue studies. He asks his friend, Yuri, if he
knows a kind and sympathetic doctor who will give him such a certificate.

These lines are taken from the essay 'Spoon-Feeding' written by W.R. Inge. In the essay Inge laments that
'civilization' has made us greatly dependent on technology. As a result we have lost the ability to perform
several tasks.
When we look at an ancient manuscript, we realize that the readers in the past had a lot of patience and
concern tration. One would need good eyesight to read the small letters on the parchment paper. Spectacles
start ed being used only in the 14th Century. Ancient Greeks did not have spectacles or false teeth. Yet most of
them led an active life even in their old age. It is amazing that Sophocles, the ancient Greek play-wright, wrote a
play at the age of ninety.

way mothers are treated by family members. A mother is expected to toil all day for the sake of the family. But
the family members take her drudgery for granted.
Mrs. Fitzgerald understands that her neighbour, Mrs. Person is not being treated properly by her family.
Mrs. Person is mild by nature and is unable to assert herself. Mrs. Fitzgerald then comes up with a brilliant idea.
She says that she will change places with Mrs. Person for a while and teach the Person family a lesson. The
women will exchange their bodies but retain their personalities. Thus, after the magic spell is chanted,
Mrs. Fitzgerald will resemble Mrs. Person physically, but will retain her own strong and determined personality.
Similarly, Mrs. Person will take on the appearance of Mrs. Fitzgerald.

The line suggests that the boy has lost the innocence and simplicity of childhood. He ho longer treats the tree
as a friend and companion. Instead, he wonders how he can make use of the tree to fulfill his needs.

'How to live to be 200' is a humorous, essay written by Stephen Leacock. In the essay Leacock makes fun of
health freaks who do absurd things in their desire to lead a long life. Such people are ready to try out any new
diet or exercise programme. They put up with a lot of discomfort in their anxiety to be healthy. However, their
efforts are in vain as, often, they succumb to some minor ailment.
Leacock feels people should not be unduly concerned about their health. There is no need to follow extreme
measures. He suggests that people should eat whatever they like without bothering too much about the contents.
They should lead a relaxed life. They should not strain themselves with too much exercise. There is no point in
living if we cannot enjoy life.
"It is better to save two brothers or eight cousins rather than one brother". Illustrate?
Many animals and insects co-operate with closely related members of their group. The organism 'selects' relatives
and helps them, though it may itself fail to reproduce or even survive. This is called 'Kin selection'. The
organism shares many genes with the Kin, so by helping relatives, it ensures that there is a good chance that its
own genes are propagated. If one were to extend the logic, people are more likely to help those who are blood
relatives than strangers, as they have shared genes. Helping relatives will increase the chances of transmission of
one's own genes to future generations.
The concept of Kin selection was first suggested by J.B.S. Haldane in 1955. Driving home the point, holdane
jokingly says that he would not give up his life for the sake of just one brother. But he would do so to save two
brothers or eight cousins. Since 50% of his genetic material is identical to that of his brother, by saving two
brothers he would ensure that all his genes lived on, in future generations. Similarly he shares 12.5% of common
genetical material with his cousin, so he would need to save eight cousins to ensure continuity of his genetic
lineage.

pesticides on the crops. The pesticides seep into the soil and poison the earth. The land becomes polluted and
infertile. But the farmer does not care about the damage to the environment. He does not hesitate to sell the land
for profit.

Give a character analysis of Squealer the pig.
A:
'Animal Farm' Successfully presents how the mechanism of 'Propaganda' and 'brainwashing' works in a
totalitarian regime by showing how the pigs could make the other animals believe practically anything.
Responsible for the propaganda is squealer, a pig that 'Could turn black into white. He is a porker pig with "Very
round checks, twinklings eyes, nimble movements shrill voice." He is a brilliant talker. Squealer is the one who
conveys all the decisions taken by Nepaleon to the other animals. Taking advantage of the ignorance of the
animals, Squealer lies to them about Napoleon's actions and reads out false statistics. He is Napoleon's mouth
piece and is responsible for making announcements to the animals. Napoleon slowly begins to isolate himself and
makes very few public appearances. Squealer manages to convince the other animals that it is for their sake that
the pigs eat most of the apples and drink all the milk, that it is necessary for the pigs health as they are
brainworkers. Squealer also justifies Napoleon's decision to stop all public meetings by changing the rule from
"all animals are equal" to "All animals are equal but some are more equal than others". He tells the animals that
Napoleon's original opposition to the windmill had merely been a matter of "tactics" to get rid of snowball who
is a dangerous character. He spreads the rumour that Snowball is a threat to the farm and therefore needs to be
expelled. He says that leadership is a 'heavy responsibility' and the animals should be grateful to Napoleon for
taking this heavy burden upon himself. He constantly changes the Seven Commandments to suit the pig's needs
and convinces the animals that what they saw may have been something they 'dreamed'. When everything else
fails, he uses the threat of 'Jones returning' to silence the animals.

Snowball is a flower of old major's teaching and works hard for the betterment of the farm. In the beginning,

Farm and has many plans for the technological development of the farm. He passionately pursues his idea of
installing a windmill in the farm to generate electricity. He is also courageous and brave and leads the animals to
victory at the Battle of the cowshed. He believes in a democratic system of functioning and so he steps up
committees and meetings giving an opportunity for all the animals to voice their opinions. Thus he wished to
empower the weaker sections. But Napoleon only wishes to have all the power for himself. He bitterly objects to
every scheme or proposal that Snowball puts forward. Napoleon is very secretive and works in a stealthy with the
sheep who are trained to bleat a slogan, "Four legs good, Two legs bad" to interrupt the animal's meetings.
Whenever Snowball is about to score a point against him. He also secretly rears a number of dogs and trains them
to obey his order. Napoleon and Snowball compete for leadership and when a meeting is organised to discuss
Snowballs proposal to build a windmill, Napoleon's ambitions nature surfaces. He lets the dogs loose on Snowball
and has them chase him off the farm and there by succeeds in his real of becoming the sole leader of the animals.
He uses Snowball as a scape-goat, blaming him for all the things that go wrong on the farm, including the
destruction of the windmill, thereby destroying Snowballs great reputation forever. Snowball eventually becomes
a symbol of the enemy, leading to widespread terror among the animals. Ultimately Napoleon becomes a corrupt,
cruel and despotic dictator who exploits the animals and their fear of Snowball. He brands Snowball a spy and a
fraitor even as he destroys the animals' hope for a better world and abuses their good will.

Discuss the main events in the plot of 'Animal Farm'.
Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a fable about rulers and the ruled oppressors and the oppressed, and an idea
betrayed. It is a classic piece of satire and the main targets are the society that was created in Russia after the
Revolution of 1917, and the leaders of the revolution. The events narrated in Animal Farm are an obvious
reference to events in another story, the history of the Russian Revolution.
The novel is a series of many interesting events. Old Major's Speech is the first turning point. He inspires all
animals into action. He sings the rebellions song 'Beasts of England'. Napoleon, Snowball and Squalor give shape
to 'principles of Animalism.'
Jones's irresponsible nature ignites the revolt. Animals drive all men off the Farm. They rename 'Manor Farm'
'Animals Farm'. They frame their own rules and call them 'Seven Commandments'.
Jones tries to recapture the Farm. But he is beaten again in the Battle of Cowshed. Snowball and Boxer lead
the animals to victory.
Events centring round the windmill are probably the most important ones. Snowballs popularity over his
proposal of the windmill ends in his expulsion. The building of the windmill reduces all animals to slaves. The
mill collapses once and Frederick's men blast it again. Napoleon makes animals work for it once more. Boxer
loses his life because of this heavy work. The mill's blast makes animals retaliate Frederick's men.
Squealer changes seven commandments to suit pig's interest. Pigs eat, drink, sleep in beds, dress like men,
walk erect, carry whips and smoke. Ultimately Napoleon makes friend with men, behaves like men and changes
the Farm's name to 'Manor Farm'. Napoleon's power absolutely corrupts him.
Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is vividly and eloquently proved in Orwell's
short novel 'Animal farm'.
